MGS4 looks very... BROWN. The environment in those videos looks more like KillZone than MGS and MGS2.

BORING

It just doesn't look or feel remotely interesting. Just another standard game. I know its supposed to be this "uber stealth" type of game but even in that arena it doesn't appear to be anything special.

Wow...can you just imagine what will happen if this game doesn't turns out to be ANOTHER victim of the sony hype machine?

WOW I have to agree with rest the person playing this MGS game is god awful. I can't really make a good judgment about the game play at all. Was he inept because he was bad at playing or because the game responds and controlled bad, is the AI overly sensitive or complicated. I don't know from those videos so I guess I will just have to wait till the game comes out.

The gameplay is such that one will easily have their asses handed to them unless caution is exercised. For the (apparent) run-'n-gun type displayed here, though, there's always an 'easy' mode. Which seems to be what everyone is determined to be unimpressed with, 'cause it's not on the Xbox.

as I said in another thread. It's a game for fans of the series and to hopefully squeeze a few sales for the ps3. These games stopped being revolutionary years ago. That doesn't mean it can't or won't be a fun game. It's just run its course.

Kinda cute how blogs of a certain subjectivity still use 'CGI' in correlation with Metal Gear Solid despite demonstrations proving otherwise and the series having no history of it. Truthiness is fun.

Commenting on the abundance of CGI in these games doesn't infer that it's all pre-rendered. While many might not have known that it isn't pre-rendered, it still doesn't change anything because most of the comments were about quantity, not quality.

That's not a particularly responsible use of the word, if that's the case. CGI and pre-rendered are too closely related as far as the average gamer is concerned; I'd thought that might have originally been the case, but that would just further stoke the fires in both camps. Lord knows we don't need more of that.

I'm undecided on this game. I loved MGS1-3, but I already had the platforms they were on when they were released. If I ever get a PS3 I'm sure MGS4 will be my first purchase, but it's not really selling the console to me. I'm not sure why, graphics are nice and all but the gameplay just isn't popping in terms of what can be done and how it plays. I've read some interesting things, and that robot is a really cool idea, but the total package isn't impressing me.

Oh my...

I wont even dare call you people fanboys. I simply refuse, the day Sony and Microsoft give me cash in my hand for playing their systems is the day I blindly bash games because it's not on my system of choice.

The idiot above who dared compare Halo significance to Metal Gear has to be an infant. Metal Gear started the entire sneak around genre, Halo was not the first FPS and say this very proudly NOT THE BEST FPS either. I mean really now I prefer Rainbow Six Vegas to Halo 2. I would even play GRAW 2 in first person before I play Halo 2.

What saddens me the most about this entire thing is the monkey see monkey do approach the video game community seems to have about everything. I've yet to buy a PS3 but come on now give credit to where it's due.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is very beautiful, the game play is very unique and has almost too much dept. For example in MGS 3, when you get to the mountains the higher altitude causes you to loose stamina faster if you wait a while snake gets accustomed to the atmosphere and you can actually see him slow his breathing. Detail like that isn't something that comes often.

In terms of market saturation and disruption, I have to give the win to Halo. Everyone knows what the game is, or at least that its on the XBOX consoles. And you can't turn the TV on or go to the grocery store without seeing an ad for the game.

In terms of gameplay revolution, I agree MGS is more interesting. But strong gameplay doesn't necessarily guarantee strong sales.

I'm as big of an MGS fan as the next guy, but goddamnit if im not getting sick of kojima's bullshit convoluted storylines, and lackluster direction. Maybe if some Movie studio let him give a shot at directing a feature film like he seems to want to so bad, he can fail at that, and put his heart back into making actual playable games, with coherant storylines.

I ache for the days of snatcher, and MGS1. everything went to shit after that.

Graphically it looks nice, with that said its not anything ground breaking, playing the COD4 beta and Splinter Cell games they're about close to those games. The graphics might be a slightly more detailed in COD4, bullet holes, heat distortion effects etc..

Seriously I think COD4 will be a better PS3 game than this. The AI looks painful in this game.

When I actually see some "gameplay" footage I'll be sure to comment. This is what Sony does... (since the early days of PS2) they shove CGI video and CGI screenshots down our throats and then bank on us being so eager for the end product that we won't notice or care that the actual gameplay graphics pale in comparison to what was originally represented. Unforuntately gaming publications have been only too happy to provide them the forum to play these games (no pun intended) with the consumer, and in some cases the "blind eye" turned by those publications amounts to nothing more than shilling for Sony.

Want proof? Just go back and read the gaming media's PREVIEW articles for any of Sony's 1st Tier PS3 releases, then fast forward to today and read their REVIEW of the same title and find the part where they speak to the graphics... IF they even mention the graphics at all in their Review. For a chuckle see Gamespot's review of Heavenly Sword, where their most specific reference to the games graphics is "The levels are gorgeous and have an almost hand-painted look to them--especially when viewed from afar." I kid you not... especially gorgeous when viewed from afar.

P.S. - Has anyone played Bioshock on the 360?

The game has particular areas in which the camera pans out and lets you view a wide vista of the level. It's downright gorgeous in every respect.

But you wouldn't know that. Nor do you actually care.

Ignorance is no excuse to pointlessly troll your favored brand's competition. You don't own a PlayStation 3. That's fine. No one cares.

Only to the extent that the sheep mentality is really getting on my nerves.

The (assumed) point of commenting in such a fashion on such a blog is for discussion purposes; when insecure morons need to justify their purchase of one console over the other flood mercilessly as much as brainlessly, it gets old.

I mean, really. I hate Nintendo for releasing the Wii. The GameCube deserved a better predecessor, one that didn't use the cover of 'innovation' as a smokescreen for desparation. But why in the wild world of extreme sports would I spend any given second of my day on the Wii section of a blog bashing it? It's awesome they enjoy it and all. That's good enough for me as a gamer.

That's not even to mention one's opinion's value over my own. That's a whole different degree of complete, unfettered stupidity. Though it runs rampant despite...

I haven't really ever gotten into the MGS games. The trailers are almost alwys awesome, but I have never really enjoyed the gameplay. BUT the games have been significant in a couple of ways 1)they showed that you could use stealth as an effective game mechanic (something for which any number of games owe them -- Splinter Cell, for example) and 2) They showed that sneak preview trailers two years before shipping a game are effective buzz generators.

I have always thought the level designs, controls and story were less than stellar in the MGS titles, but the core idea of a stealth action game was revelatory when it first came out.

I've been looking forward to MGS4 and I think, albeit brief, seeing this demo played turned me off from the entire series.

I hope a video of the demo being play by someone more capable of using an opposable thumb is posted soon.
Seriously.

Pretty easy to tell who is underage/has A.D.D. on this site. Look, not everyone is going to get the same enjoyment out of the MGS series. Totally fine. But just because you don't understand the story (and yes, it is confusing/crazy at times) doesn't make it bad. There are some very intriguing messages intertwined in the storyline. This game makes you think both about things happening in the game and also in your actual life. It's strong in that area and practically untouched. I can't stress enough to younger and uninformed gamers that MGS is NOT and NEVER has been a simplistic military shooter. It seems like that on the surface, I know.

MGS has always had top notch and innovative gameplay as well. There are a lot of cutscenes, yes, but there's also a good amount of gameplay. MGS2 had a bad balance of cutscenes...that's definitely true. Think about how different that game was when it came out. Even exploding bottles (that had flexible animations) and interactive things like that were pretty new. I hate when people don't put time in perspective. It brought a lot to table.

Raiden, a common complaint, was essential for the storyline of MGS2. Don't be insecure about it. Hell, I would have loved to play as Snake myself (it should have been an option), but it made sense with the story.

MGS is more of a cult game than it is a mainstream success. The thing is MGS is very successful in its own way. It is not Halo. It is not GTA. This is a game that is more concerned about pleasing the fans than it is with gaining widespread acceptance. People don't play Halo because it's the best FPS ever. They play it because everybody plays it. It's easy to get friends to play it because all your friends have it! It's hyped like hell and gained huge status being as how Xbox didn't have a flagship game. That isn't knocking Halo at all. It's just a heck of a lot easier to get into Halo given the circumstances. It's like the college dorm game...the Tecmo Bowl of this generation. That's the main reason it is so huge.

MGS is also heavily rooted in Japanese culture, despite the obvious Western influence. That right there will turn off many gamers. It's quirky. It's bizarre. Sometimes the humor doesn't quite translate as well as it would in Japan. That is just how it is.

I didn't mean to post this much, but I obviously care a lot about this game series. I don't like when people who don't understand it bash it. I have no problem with people just not being interested. That's fine. We all have different gaming preferences.

You know exactly the kind of people (typical 'u got own3d n00b' cultureless gamer kid) this is directed at.

Thank you so much for this.
I too care quite a bit for the MGS series.

The part I cared for most, though?
The defense of Raiden.
Really, I grew annoyed at the backlash.

The metal gear series is amazing. Very well written. Very deep story line. If you disagree well you obviously haven't looked into it. Personally I'm a pc gamer...considering what PC is capable and what next gen systems are capable of MGS4 looks pretty good. I'm not going to sit around and argue about what pointless things. I'd much rather say this...The Metal Gear series has greatly influenced video games and the stealth genre. If you disagree well good for you. You're wrong. I've found most people who dislike this game lack any form of patience. Which is fine...stick to Gaylo. ;)
