Eye of Judgment priced $69.99, includes PlayStation Eye
On October 23, Sony will unleash its foray into digital card battles, the Eye of Judgment. According to the official PlayStation blog, the game will come packaged with the PlayStation Eye camera and will set aspiring deck-shufflers back $70. Also included in the set is the camera stand (dubbed "judgment stand"), the 9 Fields battle map, a starter deck and an 8-card booster pack.
Booster picks will cost $3.75, and you can also pick up one of five pre-constructed theme packs for $14.99. Additionally, the article also explained how to prevent online gamers from cheating via pre-registering your decks with the game and letting the software randomly select what card gets drawn next. We understand the need for precaution, but we're not looking forward to skimming our decks trying to find the physical card we virtually drew.

So, why, again, does this game need a camera to be played? The gimmick, unlike anything Nintendo has been criticized for, has nothing to do with the game. It's just cool and nothing more.
Now stop acting like this is truly something new.

Well people consider Wii fit (more like wii suck) innovating also the wii-mote why not the PSeye?,so Shut up I want this stuff.
The Pseye begs for a Yu-gi-oh, Magic the gathering, Duel Masters game.
Enter the battle Zone!
Duel masters!
Duel masters!
Who is the boy with the spiky hair?.. Shobu!
Na na na na I forgot the rest
Duel masters!
Duel masters!
Exo @ Sep 21st 2007 7:14PM
Its not just a multiplayer game it also has a regular game modes.
also you cant really cheat like you can in a card game.
Either way, as long as its fun, who the fuck cares? Do you need HD graphics to have fun? Do you need perfect suround sound? Do you need a hard drive or larger optical discs to have more fun?
No, they just all add to the experience, just like this does.
Justice @ Sep 21st 2007 7:22PM
Who cares, it's an awesome deal for $70.
Joshua @ Sep 21st 2007 7:29PM
"It's just cool and nothing more."
Answered your own question. It's cool.
I'm really excited about this game, personally.
plyx @ Sep 22nd 2007 1:49AM
If you've ever played an RP card game before you would understand just how freaking cool it would be to, not only actually see the damage your card causes the competition, but also curb the cheat factor because the Eye computes whats going on.
bm @ Sep 22nd 2007 11:12AM
I have to agree with all the other replies on this, even if something is completely useless, that doesn't stop it from being hella cool.
creid @ Sep 23rd 2007 2:01PM
No, you don't need the camera to play the game. But without the camera, you'd have to play with virtual cards. And not only are virtual cards less fun, but people will pay more money for non-virtual cards. So if you want to make a console game that uses real cards, then yes, you do need the camera. I could bring up Nintendo's e-reader, but I won't.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Sep 21st 2007 7:07PM
Seriously includes Pseye?!,Sold.

*Begins searching for prices on a full booster case*
Seriously, this game had me at Hello. It looks sooooo, sooooo, sooo much like Triple Triad.
Svalsbard @ Sep 22nd 2007 12:30AM
OK, so what is to actually require me to purchase cards for this again since cards are drawn from the online database, couldn't I just name whatever cards I wanted in the deck I was playing? Or does each pack or card have a barcode that the PSEye reads or something? If not, WTF is the PSEye doing with this anyway?
Egster @ Sep 22nd 2007 6:39AM
You should read the topic before posting. Youn need to register the cards you have (possibly through a serial) and than the software will select a card from the ones you registered.
Justice @ Sep 21st 2007 7:20PM
I rly can't wait for this to come out. I've always been a big card player, dbz, pokemon, duelmasters, ygo, magic, etc so I just hope it's an investment worth having. And I wouldn't have wasted my money
like all the other card games in the past. I also hope it wouldn't end up broken like DBZ.
Goku's energy costing 4 stages doing 25 life, draw 4 cards!!! WTF? 1/4 of your deck gone if not stopped.
ThornedVenom @ Sep 21st 2007 7:24PM
What did you expect? His energy level is over nine thousand.
ThornedVenom @ Sep 21st 2007 7:23PM
Includes a starter pack? Good move, although I was still really expecting the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise to be the one making a game like this, seeing that virtual monsters are the center of its hype.
waves @ Sep 21st 2007 7:23PM
The PSEye sounds cool, but I'm not so interested in a card game. I want more artsy games (like the shadow puppet game posted last week), or even more powerful creative tools. I like that they're doing something new with the camera. They should make a lot of bite size games and apps available on PSN.
Also, only Sony could make something called the 'judgement stand'.
Gavin @ Sep 21st 2007 7:24PM
Anyone ever play Culdcept?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culdcept
I used to play Magic back in the early and mid 90's but then got out of it for various reasons. I picked Culdcept out of a used bargain bin and played it an insane amount of time. This Eye of Judgement thing looks like it could be the same thing for me. I still don't think it is a killer app for the PS3 and I'm still not buying the system yet but it is interesting.
I do think the upcoming Culdcept Saga for the 350 looks good as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culdcept_Saga
Still, the whole aspect of using the cards seems fun with Eye of Judgement but setting the camera up every time I wanted to play would be a pain in the ass.

Super-Dooper Paper Mario on the PS3?
Pretty Please?
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 21st 2007 7:46PM
Kye... This day I receive a lot of punches... there are a lot of PS3 Fanboys, and I cant alone.
They are anger because they know deep down inside that the PS3 sucks, and they are unleashing their fury against me.
Now with the HOME delay and the "last gen rumble" on ther controllers, they are mad as hell. I need a more powerful weapon.
dan stabbingworth @ Sep 21st 2007 7:51PM
Can't you troll somewhere else, Fernando Postwhore? Or heaven forbid, stop trolling?
Kye (NDF - Earth Ring) @ Sep 21st 2007 8:15PM
Fernando,
Lose not faith in your strength.
You are almost the chosen one.
I have seen for myself your defending of the Sacred N.
That is why you are 2nd in command of the NDF.
You already have the Green lion, and Water ring. You even have a pair of Rubang's Nunchuks. I doubt you fully understand the power which you hold. I would sugest watching old Voltron episodes. And Dragon Ball Z, for encouragement. For more weapons, you will need to seek Rubang B - The NDF weapons-maker.
To aid you on you quest I will give you the following:
HP +100
FP +100
Coins +100
and 1 of my own internets that I won.
Let not the SDF get you down, they are scared because of Sony's many back-trackings, with rumble etc. They attack hastily.
I know you will make it, remember, you were almost chosen.
*he waves his arms to signify he has finished speaking and those present should be in awe*

I still think this pretty gay. You can get a starter pack for any game for like 10 bucks and still get the same level of entertainment. Seriously if this isn't considered a gimmick, then I don't know what is.
awesome possum @ Sep 21st 2007 8:09PM
Sorry, but this is a huge value. The camera and it's functionality with other games (Burnout Paradise for one) plus video voice chat and recording capabilities make for a pretty nifty product for $70. A fully featured game along with a complete set of cards as part of that package makes spending the $70 all the sweeter.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 21st 2007 10:06PM
well apparantly the Ps eye is the only thing keeping this game from being completely useless. Eye of Judgement seems like a game that while many people are going to be interested in seeing their cards come to life on their tv, only a few will actually continually buy new cards each and every month.
ill trooper @ Sep 22nd 2007 11:00AM
You can play people online all around the world.
jopojelly @ Sep 21st 2007 7:52PM
Would you think it was gay if there were a DBZ game made for it?
Just kidding. I think it is pointless to, unless its more than a card game, not just a card game with graphics added.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 21st 2007 10:17PM
Well from what I've seen so far, all it is is just a regular card came, CEPT NOW YOU CAN SEE YOUR CARDS IN DELICIOUS 3D!!!!!! GUARANTEED SYSTEM SELLER!!!
I just have a feeling that sony is going to treat the Pseye exactly like the Eyetoy, meaning they'll just release a couple of shitty software for it and that's it, and third party developers will use it so, YOU CAN TOTALLY MAP YOUR FACE TO YOUR CHARACTERS!!!! HOW FUCKING RADICAL IS THAT!!!!
sheppy2.0 @ Sep 22nd 2007 12:04PM
Actually, it also serves another function which traditional card games do not. It double checks all the rulebooks to make sure your plays or your opponents plays are, in fact, legal. It also handles all the math and in games like Jyhad, that's a huge bonus right there. AND the game style reminds me of my absolutely favorite Final Fantasy spinoff game ever, Triple Triad.
So in other words, for those of us with a history of TCGs, this is a damn cool device which goes beyond "just being a card game you can see in 3D." This game can be played live or it can be played digitally.
The choice is up to you. The bitching... well, that's par for course on anything Sony does.
Dark-Pen @ Sep 21st 2007 7:55PM
....when you play online, you won't be skimming through your deck. Everything is done digitally. I assume you'll be playing with a controller when online.
Rod Oracheski @ Sep 21st 2007 8:01PM
While my addiction to Magic will attest to my love of a card-base game, I just can't understand the appeal of this one - to me it's more oddity than sensation.
Having to set up the camera, and a surface for your cards, really doesn't seem to fit with the way I play - sitting or lying on the couch.
Besides, part of the joy of Magic is sitting around the table with friends. Gaming online, especially in the almost always silent PSN atmosphere, just doesn't seem to carry the same enjoyment.
Matt B (SDF ) @ Sep 21st 2007 10:02PM
As a huge MAGIC:TG fan myself, I can't help but want this kind of game play for Magic. As much as I long for the days of old, getting high, listening to metal or some hippie shit, playing cards with my pals.... We've all grown up and don't have time for it any more. This is a way that we can rekindle the flame no matter where we are. For my friends. This is a system seller.
The PS EYE has more going for it than this card game. With its low light rez and noise canceling speaker array... kiss those headache inducing headsets goodbye.
With the capabilities of the EYE, all haters take notice that gesture based gaming can and will be done without a wiimote.
Joe @ Sep 21st 2007 8:11PM
Not to troll, but the Xbox Live Vision Camera includes 3 XBLA games, a year of Gold and the camera itself for 10 bucks more.
Better deal? I believe so
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Sep 21st 2007 8:46PM
The Xbox Vision camera could not even hold the PS Eye's jock strap. 5 microphones to pick up individual voices in a crowded room. Low lite capabilities, 120 FPS.
As for Fernando and Kye, you make The characters from Revenge of the Nerds look cool.
Pathetic.

You're talking about the 360 LIVE/camera package, which is a good deal. You can also get the camera seperately for even less. But...
This is just a different company's take on the same thing... Sort of.
The Sony cam has built-in mics, and is capable of higher-speed frame capture for more accuracy if the game can use that. Next, the benefit of the the 360 camera coming with a year of LIVE is moot since there is no charge for Sony's online (I know, I don't think it's as good as LIVE either, but since you're discussing cost and within the context of playing this game, 'Eye of Judgement,' over the internet, playing the game is free versus LIVE's cost).
On a mildly related note, the PS3 supports the 360's USB camera, or any USB webcam for that matter. I have used my 360 camera on my PS3 for video chatting.
Agent4187 @ Sep 21st 2007 8:51PM
Well, this is one of the few PS3 titles that intrigues me. For those who say the eye is a gimmick, it's a gimmick that helps enhance playing the game.
Isn't that called a "Peripheral?" Has it gotten to the point that any peripheral that comes out is considered a gimmick?
Guybrush Threepwood @ Sep 21st 2007 9:23PM
This looks pretty cool. I'm trying to stop myself from buying it, though, because I'll end up spending a lot of cash on the cards and then getting bored with the game.
Fernando and Kye: Please tell me you thought the E-Reader was stupid when you first heard about it.
Otherwise you're being 100% hypocritical.
Kye (NDF - Earth Ring) @ Sep 22nd 2007 6:37AM
Guybrush
Please re-read my first comment in this blog. I actually thing it's a cool idea and would like to play with it. I just had to Google the e-reader and that's an OK idea as well.
I may harp on about the NDF and Sony is teh devil and all but really, I own stuff by Sony (and Microsoft and Sega and...) This, to me, is just for laughs. I just have a problem with the amount of lies Sony tells about it's stuff. I also have problems with many things Nintendo does and I voice those opinions as well. Again, this NDF isn't how I live my life, it's just for teh jokes on Joystiq.
But I always say give credit where it's due. And this cardreader is cool.
Justice @ Sep 21st 2007 9:42PM
If Sony markets it well, then kids everywhere will go gaga over this game. I mean your the younger audience, they would probally want a PS3 for this game. I mean ygo was just a cartoon show. This game is like bringing the game to life.

Just scan them in and print them out. (or download the scanned images)

Wait, so they expect me to buy physical cards to play a digital game? Does anyone else think that sounds astondingly stupid? Pass.
sheppy2.0 @ Sep 22nd 2007 12:12PM
There are roughly 30 various trading card game online versions where you "buy" virtual booster packs for nearly the same price as the physical version but the online play is free. They will not let you register your real cards in your online game. So essentially they are milking you virtually and physically.
Meanwhile, Judgment only milks you once. You can play virtually or physically with the same assets. Those wanting to save some scratch can likely find an online dealer and buy an entire case of cards for about $70, get a vast majority of them, and start dealing your doubles over Ebay or other such sites. That is, after all, how I managed to not only collect every Magic card for a while but also do it on a profit.
It's what I'm planning on doing here as well. Buy a case, track down my set, and start selling tactical decks on Ebay.
josh @ Sep 22nd 2007 6:39PM
It seems like playing online will be a real pain in the ass. Every time you draw, you have to look through your deck for a card (because the PS3 chooses the card in online play, you dont draw it randomly from the deck yourself). So every turn each player has to go through their whole deck. And what if the other player has accidentally left one of the cards in his premade deck elsewhere - does the game just end? Or wait for him? Or does he lose his turn.
I hope they have good solutions to things like that, otherwise it would be frustrating to play with strangers online. Probably okay with friends though.

Am I the only one with the urge to threaten the rendered characters with my manhood?
Chazz06 @ Oct 5th 2007 8:09PM
I am surprised nobody has said this yet, but this seems like this might be Sony's answer to Nintendo and pokemon.
The way that pokemon sells all over the world, it is very smart for sony to start its own "card game" idea, but only excecute it in a totally different way. If this game takes off, Sony will be able to get different people playing, which is what they need. I mean, if they want to go the casual route, they could use this to play board games, card games, maybe even something like uno. Just more interactive.
(By the way, I have a Wii, plan on getting a 360, might get a ps3 sometime down the road.)
