TGS hands-on: Ikaruga (XBLA)

Those that have already played the game can rest assured that the game is identical in every way to the original. Every enemy pattern that we've seen in our short time with the game remains exactly as it was years ago. There is one key enhancement: the video has now been upgraded to run in HD, making the game look as good as you remember it. Admittedly, you won't be concentrating at the backgrounds while playing the game, simply for the sake of staying alive. However, it's a good addition to know will be in this remastered re-release.
Those that haven't played the game will find Ikaruga to be one of the games that's easy to learn, but difficult to master. The game only uses two buttons: A and B. One button will let you shoot a barrage of bullets, while the other will let you switch polarity. Polarity becomes the big theme of the game, as your ship changes strengths and weaknesses when changing affinities. Being a white ship will allow you to destroy black ships twice as quickly, but it will leave you vulnerable to any attack from black fire. The opposite is true for black ships. Your ship can absorb the bullets of the same color, which you can then throw back at enemies. These rules are the construct for devilish enemy patterns and level designs that will have you memorizing each level just for fun. It's brutally difficult, but immensely satisfying, and easily one of the best additions to XBLA.

This game will drive you bat shit insane. Guaranteed.*
*Guarantee not guaranteed.
McWeen @ Sep 21st 2007 3:18PM
As an owner of both the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions I highly recommend this game. Hell, I'll probably get it again.
flameofdoom666 @ Sep 21st 2007 3:19PM
Great game!
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Sep 21st 2007 3:30PM
Doesn't it use 3 buttons: Shoot, switch, and release stored lazer power of ultimate destruction?
rivaldi22 @ Sep 21st 2007 3:42PM
You are correct, sir.
Hopefully. Hopefully they didn't dumb it down, so when your meter gets full, the next time you press shoot is when you release said stored lazer power (of ultimate destructions).
That would suck.
bobartig @ Sep 21st 2007 3:49PM
It looks more like "anime missile swarm" to me than "lazer power...", but this definitely requires a button, wasn't this bound to a trigger in the GC version?
Sean @ Sep 21st 2007 3:31PM
I heard this game is super hard. :(
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Sep 21st 2007 3:59PM
You heard right.
5 levels. Total. I've owned the game since it launched on GC. I have been unable to beat it.
HineyWipe @ Sep 21st 2007 3:33PM
Can you say Dimenhydrinate? 'cuz I'll need that to play this (along with Aegis Wing). :P
StrangeBum @ Sep 21st 2007 5:03PM
Dimenhydrinate....that was easy to say..
Now really, will taking 'extra' doses of Dramamine really enhance the playing of this game?
Yeah, you're prolly right. It would.
/me goes to stock up on some motion sickness meds FTW!

I still pop this in my Wii (F-Zero GX too), great modern shump made by the masters at Treasure, I hope they put it on PSN after they're done with LIVE.
AstroZombie @ Sep 21st 2007 4:08PM
I picked up F-Zero GX used for $5 a short while back. Looks like I won't be so lucky with this one, as it goes for around $100... Guess I'll have to wait until I get a 360.
frozengod @ Sep 21st 2007 3:41PM
@ Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring)
If I remember correctly, you press both buttons at the same time for the release.
That was mildly annoying, as sometimes my button pressing skills betrayed me into switching colors.
Edge @ Sep 21st 2007 3:43PM
The ONLY reason that this release will disappoint me is because it will drive down the value of my Gamecube copy.
This is one ridiculously beautiful game and Microsoft just nabbed one of the best relatively hidden gems of the previous era.

Japanese isn't that hard to pronounce once you learn that all vowels have a constant sound.
Bidoof Protection Military @ Sep 21st 2007 7:03PM
Didn't intend for that to be a reply to you, Edge. Sorry.
ben @ Sep 21st 2007 3:43PM
This game was totally awesome on the GCN. I miss it a lot and it was just a few weeks ago a friend and I were musing over why it wasn't on XBLA yet. I wonder if you will still be able to flip your screen on its side to play. ;)
Alejandro @ Sep 21st 2007 3:45PM
@Crono: Yes, there is a third "Release" button.
@Andrew Yoon: "It's brutally difficult, but immensely satisfying ..." That is right on the mark. Why don't we have more games like these? *Sigh*
serotoninzero @ Sep 21st 2007 3:46PM
Bought. Was hoping this would come to XBLA. Now here's to hoping X-Arcade finishes off the xbox360 adapter for their joysticks so I can put my 360 in my arcade cabinet.
FrankTheCrank @ Sep 21st 2007 4:37PM
I LOVE ME SOME OVERHEAD SHOOTERS!!!
It's too bad our culture is so over them...the Japanese love that stuff.
Instead we get GTA....great.
Levi @ Sep 21st 2007 5:05PM
What I want to know is, will you be able to play the game vertically, like the GC version?
Royale @ Sep 21st 2007 5:23PM
Price? Here's hoping to only the usual 800 MS points.
Slaziman @ Sep 21st 2007 6:18PM
Maybe 40$ like GT5 Prologue
Lounge Gremlin @ Sep 21st 2007 5:28PM
This is what we should be getting more often on Xbox Live Arcade, more polished titles with quality for our monies.
Wicked stuff, looking forward to it.
kftgr @ Sep 21st 2007 7:51PM
@Edge
Well, your Gamecube version drove down the value of my Dreamcast version. Did you buy your copy of Ikaruga because you wanted to play a good shmup or were you in it for future collectible gouging? Geez.
Chris @ Sep 21st 2007 8:20PM
I'm afraid to see what the achievements for this game are.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 21st 2007 8:48PM
Damn, that does look a lot nicer, I have to admit.
