TGS07 hands-on: Metal Gear Online

The door opened onto a tiny room filled with chairs, a projector and a Japanese woman with a pointer who sternly (though she was talking in Japanese so we can't be sure) gave us our briefing. Undoubtedly hilarious if you understand Japanese, we were sadly left staring at the lady's beret. We did, however, learn the basic controls via the enthusiastic pointing at the handy images that were being projected onto the wall. These will be familiar to anyone who's ever played a Metal Gear Solid game before. After a short talk on the skill system and an overview of the map we were sent out to fight.
The skill system allows you to apply four latent abilities to your character before the battle begins. These included increased mobility, auto-aim and weapon proficiencies. The gameplay itself is very similar to Metal Gear Solid 4, but without any of the stealth abilities. Your character can crouch, crawl and do a forward flip. Movement is fairly slow, especially when compared to Warhawk's fast paced ground-based sections, but this has the effect of increasing the tension of the game.
As the game starts, and each time you respawn, you must select your weapons of choice. Other pieces of equipment are automatically in your inventory, including the famous cardboard box. Combat is a fairly simple point-and click affair (as it should be) made more complex by utilizing Metal Gear Solid's "L1-hold to ready weapon, then R1 to shoot." As a result there were several times during the game when players were seen performing a melee attack by accident.
Another control niggle is the lack of Y-axis invert. The options menu has settings for both the X- and Y-axis, which work perfectly when moving around, but the moment you ready your gun the axis invert options revert to normal. We searched the menus as much as we could, suffering many deaths, looking for some sort of aim-specific camera options before finally giving up. This isn't to say the option isn't there, it's just that we didn't find it in the j
Japanese menus.
As an online game, Metal Gear Online relies on effective team management and camaraderie. Players can help their fallen team mates out and provide cover for those in need. This adds another element to the game by not allowing players to ignore their mates, as can sometimes happen with online-only games.
Graphically, the game is close to, if not as good as, Metal Gear Solid 4 itself. The level we played in was large, detailed and full of hiding places. At some points it felt too large and we found ourselves searching for what felt like ages looking for someone on the opposing team to be killed by.
One downside we noticed was that players can clip through each other, making melee combat difficult and confusing. we imagine this will be fixed before the official release next year. The player characters are also quite bland and boring to look at; however, during his Q&A at Leipzig last month, Kojima promised that there will be playable cameos from series' staples (please let it be Johnny Sisaki). Despite these problems, we're looking forward to seeing how the final version turns out when it's released at around the same time as Metal Gear Solid 4 next year.

I had the strangest dream last night. I dreamed I picked up a PS3 at a pawn shop for 50 bucks.
There's hop for you yet PS3!
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 21st 2007 4:22PM
I give you $20 for it.
Korova @ Sep 21st 2007 4:24PM
The camaraderie sounds like a pretty cool feature, but I am confused: is it enabled or enforced?
In any case, it would bring out the best quality of online coop play.
FrankTheCrank @ Sep 21st 2007 4:33PM
Aren't you guys supposed to be waiting in line at your local Seven Eleven sucking a green Halo Slurpee?
If you don't own a PS3....just shut up.
Metal Gear 4 has XBOTS' panties in such a bunch. I love reading the incredibly envious comments.
Keep it up...
Synner @ Sep 21st 2007 4:40PM
I for one am totally envious about an online game based on a mediocre stealth game, that ditches the stealth portion for online play!!!!!!
For me the everlasting appeal of metal gear is the respawning ai that never seems to catch on to the fact that it keeps losing guards in rooms I pass through, and despite the fact that the rooms keep repopulating, the guards never vary their routines.... Simply awesome....!!!!!!
I do have a PS3 by the way, it gets about 4 hours of use a week depending on what netflix sends.
NaeemTHM @ Sep 21st 2007 4:43PM
Incredibly envious?!!? MGS4 is the PS3's savior and doom. PS3 fans have always said "WAIT 4 TEH METAL GEARZ!!" Great...you have one stellar game.
Now what?
Synner @ Sep 21st 2007 4:52PM
difference being there is no line for ANYTHING on the PS3? Except of course if you count the line of disappointed ebay scaplers I saw at Best Buy that time.
Loser. Crank is an accurate description for you, tool.
FrankTheCrank @ Sep 21st 2007 5:09PM
Synner, so angry...mommy forgot to give you your meds today?
Seriously dude, you need to get laid.
Slaziman @ Sep 21st 2007 5:15PM
MGS4 will be on the Wii 4's Virtual Console anyways
Synner @ Sep 21st 2007 5:31PM
Well, I fugured if your dumb ass was going to copy and paste the same stupid reply into every thread, why not me? I'll lay it out for you in a totally non angry way:
1. Metal gear is crap. Other than making it 3d, the game mechanics are the same from the nes days: Go find all your equipment, enemies respawn like nothing ever happened when you return to a room, and it has the same lame"shocker" plot twists as days of our lives, only with slightly more effeminate men.
2. There is nothing on the PS3 worht waiting in line for, including the system itself, so your comments about people waiting for halo in the same post about them being envious just seems incredibly stupid.
3. I have a ps3, but even if I didn't, it doesn't preclude me from saying how it is making a very poor showing in the gaming community, and sony reps are still retaining their asshole attitude since the days of blaimng disc read error on users.
4. yes, I need laid, being out to sea will do that to you. And even if I was home, I wouldn't be waiting in line for halo, I'd pick it up at best buy when I have a chance in my normal routine like any other sane non fanboy would do.
5. Nothing ever coming out on PS3 will have the following or the consumer excitement of halo, and M$ would be stupid not to cash in.
6. you are an incredible tool
lawlersauce @ Sep 21st 2007 6:35PM
He didn't mean you need to get laid, as in, you need to touch other men's genitals. He was giving you the benefit of the doubt by thinking you were straight.
You proved him wrong.
"Out at sea" lol what sea? I knew there were Virgin Islands, but not an ocean too.
Synner @ Sep 21st 2007 7:46PM
How would being away from my wife me me want to touch men's genitals? I mean there are women here too, Or maybe you are just lying on your poster bed under your my little pony poster dreaming up steamy man on man scenarios and I just destroyed your fantasy. Sorry about that. I love how the first thing anyone on this forum jumps on is calling someone else gay, then they get mad when other people say something they don't like is gay. You people all should grow up, medical science has proven that having a differing personal taste does not affect your sexuality.
lawlersauce @ Sep 22nd 2007 3:14PM
Instead, maybe you should learn some grammar and the proper use of punctuation. I barely understood what you said.
I'm not gay either, bro. Sorry, I don't need a prostate examination.
Noshino @ Sep 21st 2007 4:38PM
hey Fernando, I didn't know you only got $20 from trading in your Wii, thought you would get more... =/
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 21st 2007 4:43PM
Naa... its not what I received from the Wii. I can easily sell my Wii to any friend for like $400.
$20 its the total value of that piece of shit that you call PS3.
Noshino @ Sep 21st 2007 4:38PM
hey Fernando, I didn't know you only got $20 from trading in your Wii, thought you would get more... =/

then sell it, cause once the hype dies off, you wont even get $20...
...and, please, if you may, could you tell me where you found this $ 20 PS3? I want one of those =)
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Sep 21st 2007 4:55PM
"...once the hype dies off..."
I keep hearing the same since the last year.
And also, I keep hearing since last year: "Just wait until this game blah blah..." Noob.

Slaziman @ Sep 21st 2007 5:39PM
No because that's not a stealth game turned online multiplayer game.
MGS4 is still good but this one is just weird.
Jon @ Sep 21st 2007 5:46PM
If this was a 360 game I am sure many of you claimed to hate MGS would be clamouring over it.

Thats trolls for you. :) Common sense doesn't live there.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 21st 2007 5:51PM
Am I the only one that thinks Synner should be slapped, whatever dude, it comes across as if you have little or no life, if you find MGS mediocre, I would like to know what you play for fun, because God, you must be a way better developer then Konami. I think if you have nothing decent to say it is best to keep quiet.
So far, MGS is my favorite stealth game, I couldn't care less what game you think is better because most likely I'll have a different opinion for various reasons. I for one am happy this game is coming and am looking forward to it.
Jealous of Joystiq.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 21st 2007 6:23PM
I was going to say something sarcastic but I think I'll just say what I have to say:
MGS, while is has gained numerous accolades and praises, is not for everyone. Get this through your heads. Not everyone is going to enjoy this game, why? Because people everywhere has different tastes. While it may be a great game, there are tons of things in it that may and probably will alienate certain people. (the fact that it's a stealth game and that Kojima is fucking insane(and not in a good way) MGS, like every other game, will not appeal to everyone. So stop bitching in disbelief everytime someone says they don't like MGS. It's called they have different tastes than you. Get over it.
The only way I'll agree to a public stoning of someone is if they say, "I HATE MGS CAUSE IT'S ON THE PSSUK, 360 ROOLS!!!!"
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Sep 21st 2007 6:43PM
I don't know about the rest but I would like to hurt Synner,Big time.
Synner @ Sep 21st 2007 7:22PM
Is that the kind of thing they teach you in your wannabe bruce lee classes WOTS? I would think that you'd have learned to channel your anger better than wanting to hurt someone, just another reason you being a gun owner scares me, can't wait until the day someone cuts you off driving and all that dormant rage inside you explodes and you end up in jail.
As for maveric, I don't think konami is a horrible developer, I just think Metal Gear is an overrated franchise that hasn't evolved in 25(?) years. Halo isn't the end all in gaming either for the record. I like a lot of different games, for instance right now(before we got underway anyway) I am playing overlord, forza, bomberman, puzzle quest, bioshock, Stalker, darkstar one, and I try to put in a little time on motorstorm every now and agian, but the load times just piss me off to no end.
I think Splinter Cell and Hitman are about a thousand times better stealth games than metal gear. I hate that the ai is so damn retarded in MGS, and respawning enemies just irritate the crap out of me. If I kill everyone in the base, they sjhould stay dead, not respawn as if nothing happened. For this same reason I don't really like metroid either, I hate backtracking through areas more than once in and once out.
I'm sorry you get violent tendencies to anyone who disagrees with you, but maybe when hair starts to grow on your pee pee you'll grow out of that, but I'm not holding my breath.

Its also funny how the "hope" dies for a PS3 game, but the SDF just moves to another game..
"I wonder if we are going to see so many hateful comments come FFXIII."
upz @ Sep 21st 2007 6:25PM
You're comment is wrong on many fronts, mon.First, no hope has died for MGS4, we simply wonder why there is so much hate for something that's pretty much a guarantee, just like, you know, Halo. Second, was there really any hope for MGOnline in the first place. It screams cash-in on overzealous fanboys, just like, oh I dunno, let's say Halo again?
NeoAngelicPrince @ Sep 22nd 2007 5:34PM
I SECOND the original post.
Once MGS4 and MGS4 Online bust it will be FFXIII that will be the long awaited savior of the ps3...
And actually that its one game that MIGHT do the trick despite the fact that its probably gonna be the same old stuff that FF has been about.
However for people like me who've never owned a sony gaming system and have hardly played FF it does incite a lot of curiousity...at least for me it does.
Lol if MGO reaches even 1/100 th of the following that Halo has then I'll implode.
It looks like any other generic multiplayer game.

maverick_saturn_626 @ Sep 21st 2007 6:01PM
What fun is a stealth game without the respawning AI? Kill everyone, walk through all the levels you played without being confronted :S Kinda boring, the whole point of MGS is to always be under pressure. I guess the respawn thing could be honed on, but I doubt it would make MGS any more fun then it already is.
Synner @ Sep 21st 2007 7:06PM
Because the soldiers that respawn should at very least be a little more on guard since you know the ones they relieved were assassinated and all, not walking the exat same routes, at the same level of alertness (or lack thereof)
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Sep 21st 2007 6:39PM
Yeah it sounds nice but let's go to the important part,Is there tea bagging in MGSO?
Oh yeah and the price too yeah that,It is going to be cheaper than MGS4?,is going to include other games(A la Orange Box)? or is stand alone multiplayer game like Shadowrun?
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Sep 21st 2007 8:10PM
I guess I'll be one of the only posters here who isn't bitching about which console is better.
ANYWAYS, MGO is looking like a lot more fun than I originally thought.
anantha92 @ Sep 21st 2007 10:49PM
Why dont all of you guys just STFU. This is a game that is BASED on the STEALTh series, but tehy decided to take a different path and make it an action packed online shooter. Is that sucha problem? Stop bashing MGS4 because this clearly sin't it.
KiwiLord @ Sep 21st 2007 11:24PM
I don't seem to recall AI re-spawning ever since MGS on the playstation...In MGS2 and 3, if you kill an enemy, their DEAD. They don't come back...
You can say that the Metal Gear franchise sucks all you want, but that's still only an opinion. You can say, "well, a lot of people think so! So that means I'm right!" but that doesn't make it true. MG has always done well critically, even though each game only introduces small changes. They've been enough to keep the series going. One of Metal Gear's strengths is the story. Go ahead and talk about how stupid the story is, that, again, is just an opinion. I could say "Well, you just don't understand it/haven't played the game through/don't like complicated story lines that involve actual thought," but I bet some of you just don't like the story. What I don't understand is why your so damn vocal about it. Your not going to change anything by calling someone gay because they think that Metal Gear has a good/descent story line. And don't say "were vocal because the Metal Gear fans are so loud about it!" You...can just not listen to them...Amazingly, on the internet, you can just skip past things you don't want to read. What's that, it's on T.V.? Oh lawdy, ma re-mote con-trolla is to faa away! You have a friend that luuuuuuvs Metal Gear? Steer the conversation away, it's not that hard.
As for the PS3 itself. I can't afford one, but I do want one. There aren't any games for the wii that look interesting to me. As for the 360, even with Halo, holds no sway over me. I'll get one someday, just not anytime soon (It's price is dropping fast enough though). You have to remember the massive gap between the 360 and PS3's launches was pretty huge, and considering that they both want the same audience, the 360 has a massive install base that Sony wants desperately to tap into. For developers, they don't really care if a system is harder to program for, they want which system has the larger crowd. Had the PS3 been released first, things would probably be different. The wii is playing to an entirely different audience, so it's not a part of the console war. It doesn't have to be, it's going to be successful because it's Nintendo, they know what the hell they're doing. Relative objectivity is fun kids! Try it out sometime!
As for MGS4, I really hope they fix some of the things that can break the game experience. Mostly the 'lock-on-to-head-shot' thing. It was fun for a while, but since you spend all your time strafing and shooting and aiming for the head, it got old fast.
You see, you could have just skipped over this entire post. I look forward to your demeaning, derogatory, and flaming responses.
Stee @ Sep 22nd 2007 4:13AM
To Synner: You know its strange how although you hate Metal Gear Solid so much you actually read the article. In fact you didn't just read the article you felt the need to take time and post your hate for it. Not only once but several times.
It's weird really because even though I don't like Halo at all, since I'm not into alien weaponed themes I prefer realistic weapons like COD games. However even though I don't like Halo you don't see me going to a article on Halo multiplayer and expressing my hatred to the game.
If I had to guess.....I would think you decided to post here because you knew people would argue with you and for some reason you like it. Most people would just assume you do this because you crave the attention or need to feel like you matter, but what do I know I'm just a passerbyer looking through articles.
Synner @ Sep 22nd 2007 7:13AM
I'm out at sea and left all my game systems home except my DS. This is what I have for entertainment. Plus is honestly pisses me off that gamers get so wet in the pants about Metal Gear. It has a lame interface, solid snake is just plain retarded, and the "story" and "plot twists" are right out of days of our lives.
Dork 1: OH MY GOD!!! DID YOU HEAR!!! Snake is a clone of the brother of his mother!!!! And his enemy is secretly the guy you thought was your friend who happens to be his son's mother's brother's uncles' roomate!!!
Dork 2: So What's that make us?
Dork 1: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
KiwiLord @ Sep 22nd 2007 10:40AM
Synner....You win this round purely for the fact that you quoted Spaceballs. Nothing more.
But I will say, I honestly never encounter much of the Metal Gear dorks. Where do you go to hear about this? You would have to go hunting to find it (Threads ABOUT Metal gear, or reading the comments here on Joystiq about Metal gear.)
Synner @ Sep 22nd 2007 1:20PM
And Frank the Crank just irritates the shit outta me
Synner @ Sep 22nd 2007 1:29PM
I used to manage a gamestop (it was babbage's then) from 97 until a little after ps2 came out and all these people would act like meatl gear was the greatest thin since sliced bread. Then it comes out on original xbox (or PC, I can't remember) then it comes out on GC and every time people act like it's the second coming of christ, even though games like splinter cell nad hitman surpassed it years ago. Now it is supposed to be the "savior" of PS3, and if you read any post about any system on joystiq it will eventually devolve into the following:
Dork 1: 360 RulZ!!!111one POS3 is crap
Dork 2: RROD RROD RROD! Bluray Bluray! Cost of WIFI! $50 a Year for online!!!
Dork 1: No games to play! osony online sux! (I agree with this part) Waggle! Waggle!
Dork 3: Games make the system! Not about Graphix!! Hope you like FPS!!! RROD!!
Dork 2:Gate$ is teh devul!! RROD RROD!!! Potential!! Wait until MGS and FFIV!!!!!
Not to mention for some reason everytime Kozoyu (Or whatever the MGS guys' name is) and Shiggy stop to take a shit Joystiq has to run it as a front page headline.
I'm just tired of hearing it, its a mediocre game with a corny soap opera style story that if it was on TV, these monkeys wouldn't touch it.
emir989 @ Sep 22nd 2007 3:49PM
Synner, if you love so much splinter cell and Hitman, then you should atleast thank Hideo Kojima and his Metal Gear franchise, why?. Well Metal gear set the standards for stealth games, in am era where all you could find was hack n' slash, scroll n' jump. You must remember that MGS has been out since the 80's, while your precious Splinter cell only came out after it realize the potential in stealth games, once again thanks to MGS. I respect your decision to dislike MGS, but my friend do not insult a product that revolutionized the gaming industry for our benefit. I'm no longer talking just about stealth, Im talking about cinematic presentation, voice acting, realistic representation of facts, villains you could actually relate to, plot twists, and a sense of tension likenever before. Basically stuff that you could only see in a Hollywood blockbuster, except you can interact with it.
So, my friend "Synner" be fair and respectful about this franchise, without it many games would not be what they are today. I must agree with you that SC and HM had better elements in some respect then MGS, but that doesnt take away its greatness, I guess this is why we gamers have the power to buy any game we like, and not just choose between one or the other.
