"Two Soldiers Reminisce" seems like something that could have been pulled straight from The History Channel, were the History Channel more focused on things that didn't happen. Two vets talk about the weapons they used during the war with the Covenant and the intricacies of the Brute Spiker. Then things get a little teary when the old soldier alludes to the sacrifice the Master Chief may or may not have made. We're not sure if it makes us want to rush out and buy the game (we were probably going to do that anyway), but it is nice to see video game lore treated with this kind of reverence.

The excitement is already there, now its about building emotions. Everyone was excited right before halo2 came out but there really wasn't anything to draw you in, not in an intimate emotional way.

I thought that was a bit ace actually. Much rather see this kind of thoughtful ad campaign than the usual cgi renders and fireball bollocks.

As someone who wasn't really planning on getting Halo 3, I have to say they're starting to win me over. I'll probably pick up a used copy or something, but still, I never really cared for the halo and didn't even play halo 2, so I don't know much about the story. The commercials certainly do a good job of making whatever story these games follow seem bigger than it really is. Advertising at its best.

Good, but I don't think it's as good as the first one. I have to admit that very first ad definitely pulled at my emotions a bit, whereas this one, while interesting, just doesn't "stick" in the same way.
Still, I like these ads a lot more than most, for any products. Most definitely on target.

I know were getting it, too, because on the site's tour, you've got like... I think three videos you can't watch yet... Something.

These ads are the biggest spoilers of them all. It's apparent WE finished the fight since these old guys are around to talk about it. Don't get me wrong I didn't think for a minute that we would lose although that would have been a more interesting outcome but it would have pissed of too many die hard loners who eat and breathe this shit like it's real.

I'm starting to get the feeling that Master Cheif doesn't die. I mean if he does then it won't be much of a surprise, will it? Every single ad both in video or print alludes to his demise. Where is the twist? I don't know, just my $.02.

The first two were better though IMHO.
The one with the old guy saying "He gave us hope." chokes me up everytime.

I enjoyed the first Halo, but didn't even buy the second. I just didn't feel the need. I also had no plans to buy the third. If nothing else, it just seemed like more of the same, and the hype really turns me off.
However, these ads are fantastic. I mean really good and interesting. I hope they win some awards.
I still may not get Halo 3, but these ads actually have me reconsidering. Weird.

you should get the 2nd one, it's probably pretty cheap now. i played a few hours of the first when it came out and got very bored, but tried #2 last month and couldn't put it down, it was pretty fun. So now I'm actually gonna get the new one, especially since i got it free from toysrus for buying skate and eternal sonata :) (kinda like a $20 discount on each of the 3 games)

Well I think I read somewhere that the ad company that does the Believe campaign doesn't know how Halo 3 ends, so they could just be putting the 'memorial' spin on the campaign to draw in people that want a true emotional attachment to their games.
Great ad too. Some of the best acting I've ever seen.

Disgusting.
Now we've gone beyond the glorification of war to the glorification of fake wars never even fought.
There was this big debate as to why there are so many shooters, why games generally have guns. The consensus was that guns were a convenient way to interact with your environment that everyone understands. If someone is going to do something you don't want to happen, you shoot them (kill them), and the thing doesn't happen. In this way, you effected change, and a prerequisite number of changes effects (like puzzles solved) and you complete the game.
But these commercials don't fit with that motif. They go the other way, seemingly positing that we don't play shooters simply because they're easy to understand and provide lots of action, but instead because they actually DO represent war. This is evidenced by the reminiscing about war here.
I find this somewhat disturbing.

Then don't buy the game you big vagina, instead, go out and get yourself a box of Kleenex, a Big old Bottle of Johnson and Johnson no more tears shampoo, and a Subscription to Oprah's magazine.
Glorify war my ass, we give War Heroes the honor they deserve, but who really says, hey remember WW2?? Man we should fight another one of those shits, they rule of all!!! We play war games and any games for that matter because it is a big get lost in yourself game of make believe. I am not a WW2 Fighting ace, nor an army of 1, nor a mafioso, nor a contract killer, but I can be all those things and more on a game. I can be a race driver, hell I can even pretend to run an animal hospital or prison in the video game world.
The simple formula is: War games sell, that is why there are so many of them. If they stopped selling, bet your ass there wouldn't be any.

So if I follow your meaning correctly, then war is disgusting? Granted, violence is a horrible by product of war, but sometimes war is inevitable. I'm not trying to defend any conflict in particular, but where would we be without World War II? Is war in self defence acceptable? Should we lay down and roll over in the face of any aggression nearly to avoid the atrocities of conflict?
And as far as the commerical goes, I see nothing in the actors tone that seems to glorify war. They seem more horrified by their memories and what they have seen and totally indebted to the Chief for whatever he did. Perhaps it is not the violence that is glorified but the camaraderie shared between fellow soldiers and the teamwork required to suffer the hardships they have suffered.

get real. I mean this is a game that represents good vs evil. It is not saying war is great, rather it is a representation of what war is and why they are waged. I hate to break it to all of you who think that war is bad, becuase it's not. Sometimes war is justified, and sometimes it's not. War is the answer in some situations. This game represents one of those situations, much like the advance of the nazis in the 30's and the islamo-fascist of today. A just society must stand up and defend its right to exist.

I don't play shooters simply because of it's easy to understand gameplay and violence (although it helps). I play shooters mainly because of the story and the experience I get for playing it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who played Half-Life and thought "Wow, this was a compelling story behind a wall of violence." But I didn't very much enjoy the shooting of headcrabs as much as unraveling the story behind Half Life and fixing the space time continuum (I know it's the resonance cascade, but STC sounds so much better).
You are the one of handfuls of people who are destroying the gaming industry because of your belief that FPS's should contain action, lots of it, and nothing else. I don't understand how people think gaming will evolve when idiots like you keep asking for shit and then expecting change.
With that in mind, let's go on to your topic then. The commercial is reminiscing about a fake war in the future and has old people talking about it, thinking back to said fake war.
The only thing disgusting was that the shotgun guy said one line nothing else.
I don't know about you, but to me, Halo 3 isn't going to be a glorious hell-fest of bullets, but a conclusion to all things Halo. That's why most people are excited. Which will explain that people are actually excited about the story and not talking to 14 year olds sound like girls on LIVE. And when marketing tries to point out a wonderful story by doing something different like this, you go all blubbery.
Way to go.
While I'm on this topic of you being a douche, I might as well add that war is never glorified in any way unless through propaganda. And since the world have been though so many wars that it isn't funny anymore when someone blows up, propaganda really doesn't have any effect anymore. Therefore, by deductive reasoning:
Propaganda glorifies war.
The world no longer has any propaganda.
Therefore, The world no longer glorifies war.
I win. The end.

David, I have no idea where you got the idea I think FPSes should have all action all the time. Just get off that high horse.
As to the idea that propaganda has no effect anymore, I think you need to rewind your mind a little bit back to November 1, 2004. The Bush administration needed to convince the world that the Iraq War was going well, when in reality it was going very poorly. They put in place a multipronged attack, and convinced the electorate that things were going well. But in reality, it was far from the truth. Propaganda worked very well there. Don't believe it's gone.
And to the others, I never said I'm anti-war. I'm not anti-war. But I don't glorify it. WWII was a necessary evil, I celebrate the results of it. I don't celebrating the killing and inhumanity during it. And thus I certainly wouldn't create a fake war which has no positive effects, just battles to reminisce about.
So what I'm saying here is I would prefer (if I had my way) that Microsoft return to emphasizing how their game works AS A GAME.

They are in my picture because I have an AK. I like them. I think it is a magnificent piece of work. It has nothing to do with my sanity. You seem to be one of those people who fears that firearms are evil monsters, when in fact they are nothing more than a useful tool. If I had a picture of a vintage muscle car in my profile, would that preclude me from speaking about fuel efficiency? Then why is my rifle so off-putting to you?
Since you have a picture of Mario in your profile, you have no business posting in a MS related thread so GTFO.

Just remember when your playing through Halo 3 that real Heroes are out there dying for your freedom to play and enjoy your game. If you agree with the war or not our young Americans are answering the call to defend the freedoms we take for granted every day.

it's not a glorification though, is it? it's just a mockumentry. This is more to do with the discovery channel than Medal of Honour- it's just a portrayal of our reaction to a conflict transplanted in to fiction. What's wrong with that?
