There's not too much to be excited about this week on the Virtual Console, just a spin-off, a sequel and a mish-mash of both. We look forward to the comments when some of you will inevitably tout Kirby's Avalanche as the best Puyo Puyo rip-off, or Streets of Rage 3 as the best in that series or Legend of Hero Tonma as the best ... something. We're looking forward to it.
Legend of Hero Tonma (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): For the following analogy, mustaches are not withstanding. Imagine, if you will, if Mario was a superhero. Now imagine that his power was "somewhat more impressive fireballs". Now remove him from the Mushroom Kingdom and put him in a fantasy setting. Congratulations, you have just designed Legend of Hero Tonma. Enjoy your royalty checks.
Kirby's Avalanche (Super NES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): One thing you've got to give Kirby: He's got his fingers into everything. He's like the P. Diddy of video games. This week, we find K. Biddy in a Puyo Puyo clone called Kirby's Avalanche.
Streets of Rage 3 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Sometimes, the rage on the streets is so great that you have to come back for a second helping of beat-em-up action. But when you return for a third time, people start to get upset. They start neighborhood watches, it's bad. If you like this genre, Streets of Rage 3 might be worth your time, but we're spiritually opposed to buying any game that features a character named Skate.
"There's not too much to be excited about this week on the Virtual Console..."
Are you kidding me? Streets of Rage 3 is a fantastic game. Moreover, if you want to legally purchase it you'll be spending $30+. Buying it on VC is a freaking bargain.
I remember SoR3 back in the day. After 2 I was totally psyched for this game... until I played it. I played for a few hours and tossed it across the room. Wow that game was CRAP. If I remember right its got a robot, an old man, and a kangaroo as playable characters, while the music went to absolute trash.
Bah! Streets of Rage 3 was pretty bad, and didn't hold a candle to it's predecessor, SoR2. That being said, the overall series is fantastic! So many hours wasted, so many Galsia's ruined...
I loved Streets of Rage 3. Secret characters and Special moves when running and ith weapons were really great additions. It's probably my favourite of the series, maybe because it was the one I played loads as a kid.
I think the one of the best 2 player beat-em ups on the SNES that was kinda under the radar was Brawl Brothers from Jaleco. Me and my old Army roommate would play that game for hours.
the main problem with SOR3 was that it was way too hard. you couldn't even complete the game fully on easy. other than that it was pretty sweet though i'm defiantly going to be picking this one up.
hero tomna looks more like megaman clone than mario. The level design looks horrible as its not clearly visible where to jump toward. Isn't planet puzzle league much better game than Kirby? I bought first sor and it was fun but i don't need more.
I'd reccomend SoR3 if it was actually Bare Knuckle 3, with Ash the transvestite (who was playable, no less), a far more balanced difficulty, the correct color schemes for the returning characters, and a plot to blow up an entire country with nuclear weapons (as evidenced in the intro when a city is completely levelled - all of this being completely removed from SoR3 in favor of a crappy "let's replace city officials with ROBOTS" plot; a move that reeks of, say, 4Kids, despite them never touching this game).
But alas, it's not BK3, it's SoR3. Avoid.
Also Kirby's Avalanche? Don't we already have Mean Bean Machine?

Are you off your rocker Joystiq?! Streets of Rage 3 is the pinnacle of beat-em' ups!
Now bow your heads in shame.
zero2dash @ Sep 24th 2007 12:48PM
$30+?
Is it 1994 again?
You could get a used Genesis at a garage sale for $5 and the game for $2-$3 from the same seller.
$30+? *rolls eyes*
vinny @ Sep 24th 2007 1:13PM
or we could just wait for it to come to xbox live arcade for a cheaper better version in hd with achievements and online co-op

WTF is Zero2Dash on about? Troll?
http://search.ebay.co.uk/streets-of-rage-3_W0QQfbfmtZ1QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsabfmtsZ2QQsascsZ2QQsbrbinZt £32.99 ($64) is the cheapest here, against £4 on VC.
It's not even in game shops.
*it's not even out on the VC here.

Yeah, you know, because every garage sale in the country is heaping with copies of Streets of Rage 3. It's just that easy to find!!!

Plaid Ninja @ Sep 24th 2007 12:09PM

Oh come on, now...that game looks like Mario about as much as any other standard looking platformer from that era does.

Hey now. Kirby's Avalanche was/is a great game. I spent a good chunk of time over summer playing the game against my mum.
Yep, it has come full circle. I went home during the summer and my mum and dad spent all day playing videogames...and I complained.

I want the Japanese version! You can't say no to beating up busty babes and that transvestite boss / playable character Ash.
But, seriously, that game blew chunks. Buy Streets of Rage 2.

SOR 3 was good, but it got its ace handed to it by SOR2.
Though 3 did have the boxing kangaroo...
