PS3 players hoping to test their Unreal Tournament 3 skills against PC players (read: get their clocks cleaned) will be out of luck according to Epic's Mark Rein. In an IRC chat yesterday, Rein wrote, "The biggest challenge in doing cross platform play is syncronizing [sic] the builds such that the build on the PC is 100% compatible with the build on the PS3."
The good news is that the PC-PS3 divide may not be a permanent one. Rein said that the feature is one that could be considered after the game is released. But, unfortunately, he says that even at that point "the likelihood is small." Though it's a cool feature, we still want to know ... is it something you guys care about?

AMEN. ¬_¬"
I'd love to have a FPS with X360/PS3/PC gamers going against one another, but that sounds like more of a pipe dream than the Wii being thrown into that mix. Hell, as I stated earlier in the week, pull the (Bandai-)NAMCO approach and offer a specialty weapon on each console version.

One of the primary reasons I'm getting a ps3! Ps3-pc play matters to me only in terms of how many available servers there are.

Amen to that. UT is the definitive online competitive CTF experience. I wish they'd release a spiffed up UT99 on the Wii.

the maps that are going to be so called gimped are going to be downloads later kind of like they couldnt do the cross platform play. If the PS3 will be gimped, the 360 will gimped x2, battle with space and hardware.:) it doesnt take that much to buy a mouse and keyboard it cheaper than buying a controller unless your going all out.

Unreal tournament never sold well on consoles because it sucked ass on consoles at the time kind of like counter strike for the xbox.

While I can't quote you any exact figures(isn't that a first for message boards...? I didn't pull out some crazy fictional statistic outta my ass)... I thought UT must've been profitable enough on the original Xbox to warrant a silver case copy, right?

Its probably good to keep them separate for competitive reasons.

I'm a bit disappointed at this news, but still glad they decided to keep the M/KB control option. Would be better if you can do 2 split screen with that control scheme, seeing as there are 4 USB ports on the PSTRIPLE.
There's still hope that Epic may come around to adding this feature.

PS3 to PC isn't make or break for me. In fact online gaming is overrated. Unless it's an FPS; online play means diddly. Online play has been overdone and over exaggerated on the Xbox and Xbox 360. They want to slap online play on every title even where it's not needed. Saints Row is a great game and I've never played it online nor wanted to and is there an online gaming community still playing dead rising? Why would a game like that need online play?
I'd rather purchase a title first and foremost for the Storyline, then game play, graphics. Online play is an absolute last for me and a way to extend a game beyond it's normal 7 -10 hours of play that these non creative developers are sticking us with.
I hope there is going to be single player story mode for unreal tournament 3; online play with other ps3 bretheren is just fine by me. I'd really like to whip the shit out of 360 fanboys in Madden 08 and other games like Unreal Tournament 3 just for the sake of whippin on 360 virgin pimpleface never touched a woman in their life fanboys.

Dude, you're picking graphics over multiplayer. Shame on you.
You talk about the joy of pwning 360 fanboys in multiplayer--- but shun said multiplayer?
If single-player is a game's body, then multiplayer is its soul. Have respect.

it's cool that the ps3 will support m/kb in games that choose to use it, though I will have to see it in ungimped action before I get too excited. If it works well and gets used maybe MS will start allowing it in 360 games.

Console shooters are great fun. If you can't enjoy any of them, then that is your loss. I personally don't like the way I have to sit to use a kb/m effectively and don't like how fast you can turn and move. Too intense or something. Console shooters are more laid back and more fun for me. It is just that aiming takes more skill and can be frustrating at times.

"Our PC fanbase is of ultimate importance to us. They are our bread and butter," added Rein, possibly addressing post-Gears of War claims that Epic is now a console-focused studio. "We can't let them down or compromise their experience in any way to accomodate cross platform play."
That's all the reason I need. Do the PC version first as good as possible, then make the necessary compromises to make it work on consoles. I wish more devs would apply the formula...

I agree.
But at the same time, PC gamers as a whole need to step getting upset when console games are ported imperfectly. Perfect example is Lost Planet-- it was obviously made for a console first, yet somehow people expected it to be a fully-optimized, keyboard/mouse loving game. No, kids. Just be happy you're getting a port of a popular game when many are beginning to consider your platform irrelevant... and plug in the 360 controller.
If console gamers take some games designed for PC first, we need to do the same.

I love the idea for many reasons, from a PC gamer perspective.
Being able to play against console gamers will be a rush of new blood to PC gaming, and might get some console gamers interested in an amazing platform.
It'll balance out the skill levels a little more comfortably. I think the average PC gamer and ps3 gamer would be about equal, with the uber-amazing PC players being the best of all. However, those are the same ones that own most of us nonstop. I find online PC gaming to be inundated with people too good for their own good; I'd like to play against my console brethren.
Most importantly might be the fact that this could help the ps3. I don't want to see ps3 lose the war; I want competition, lots of it. And I'd especially love to see both consoles keeping for who is more BFF with PC-- the true winner would be PC gamers.
Playing against consoles becoming something regular, more PC gamers would invest in headsets and use voice chat... something I find lacking in all but the most clan-based games... and not as well-supported as it should be.
Bah, this is disappointing. I wanted ps3 to have something to take a smack at Games for Windows Live... so that Microsoft would have to improve it.

I wanted the the cross platform play because that would increase the player base of the game meaning that even 3 years after release there would still be a large online community like the way it is now with UT2k4.

so if you buy the ps3 version, you get to play online with the 12 other people who bought it. if you buy the pc version, you get to play with the million others who bought it. tough call that.

While the segregation of console and PC gamers isn't necessarily a good thing, I doubt it would matter all that much.
Although I abhor PC gaming because of my job (too many computers), I'd adventure to say that anyone hardcore about graphics and performance would want a PC rig to play it anyway. The Cell processor may be fancy, but it just doesn't have the access to the amount of memory the PC rigs will have. Plus they can adjust performance settings where the PS3 will not likely be able to. Mouse and keyboard doesn't matter nowadays whether supported or not.
Hopefully PSN isn't as quiet (the players) by the time this game comes out. Then again, I haven't decided whether to buy this for PS3 or wait for the 360 version. I'll probably want to see it in action first.

This sucks in so many ways. This is the first KB/M game for PS3. It would have been the first cross platform game as well. It could have been a great example for all other game manufacturers of how to maximize your game across all platforms.
I don't understand how letting the two interface would have in any way affected the gameplay of their core users - the PC players. PS3 players can use KB/M too (any off the shelf USB will work, as well as bluetooth), so it's not like they'd have to gimp the PC users down to analog stick levels. For anyone who didn't feel competitive enough using the controller, they could hook up a keyboard and mouse (total cost, assuming you don't have spares available: like $15).
I would have loved sitting on my couch in front of my big screen playing against my friends on their PCs. Now it'll just be something I have to get on the PC so I can play against my friends that don't have a PS3.

The thing that people need to realize is that UT3 for the PS3 is designed differently than the PC version. Both look very nice, but in the PS3 version you move (walk) slow, ala all console FPS, and in the PC version you move really fast. That is one big hurdle that they have to get over to allow for cross platform play, though it shouldn't be that hard. Set up a cross platform mode where everyone moves at the same speed.

I bet the reason why they don't have cross platform playing for pc-ps3 is because Microsoft doesn't want that to happen, Xbox 360-PC play would be very common.

What nonsense! Microsoft can't do anything to stop a game developer offering PC cross-platform play with anything, including PS3's, legally or technologically.

i wouldnt mind seeing this just for the simple fact of more players. multiple platforms makes the gaming audience pick and split off to a certain group, with cross platform, it wouldnt matter what console you have as you could play anybody. im currently a computer science major and am familiar with the aspects of coding (not hi-def next gen game coding, with all due respect) and i cant imagine it being that hard to put a filter in the server search to allow players to only play against controller users or KB/M users to effectively even the playing field. i really think that the developers are just lazy is all. i would be playing it on PS3 and i can say that i wouldnt mind the challenge of going up against a PC user, stuff like that keeps games interesting.

But I would love to pwn my friend on his 360, and get him to finally proclaim the PC Superiority.

The only reason I was excited about UT comming to ps3 was the ability to use KB/M and play with PC users. I have always loved FPS online games for the PC, but upgrading the PC to keep up with the games that come out for it gets to be a pain in the @$$ as well as the wallet. I wish I could play a game with the adequately populated PC community using a less expensive machine and having the same advantage as a PC user(KB/M).
I think this step would make a lot of people happy. Being able to connect to more is always better IMHO. I have been slowly stepping away from the expensive PC gamming world and into the less expensive console gamming world, and something like UT3 cross platform play makes it easier for me to give up the PC because the benefits of the PC that mean the most to me would still be there.

first of all, even with a mouse and keyboard, a ps3 is still a ps3 and it is not a computer. most players wont buy the kb/m because they dont have a good place to sit with it. 100% of my friends who own consoles have it plugged into a tv and they sit back on a couch and play. when you own a gaming computer (those true gamers out there) you have a desk setup that is made for your comfort handling a kb/m. This is why computer shooting is far superior. yes, it is possible to emulate a PC using a ps3, hooked up to a monitor on your computer desk using a kb/m, but then whats the point of having a console anymore? You might as well have have that sick ass computer and own some console noobs lagging on frames per second on their couches.
