Assisted by strong sales of the
Crisis Core edition of the PSP lite, the system has sold 300,000 units in Japan since its
staggered launch. According to Enterbrain, 250,752 units sold following the official launch on Sept. 20 and 75,943 of the
Crisis Core edition sold since its release a week earlier. All this is sure to be reflected in the
Japanese hardware sales chart at the end of this week. Apparently PSP sales are now in excess of 25 million globally.
It may have taken a while, but the
PSP is really coming into its own. There's a decent library of games with some
solid looking titles coming out soon. We hope to see more connectivity between the PS3 and PSP, but the future looks bright for handheld.

I've had my PSP since day one and thinking about getting the 2000.....funny thing, the Target in my area (Hackensack NJ) has the PSP-2000 black core already, I thought the core would be available in Oct?

PSP is bigger than the 360 and PS3 combined. Zoinks!

Ummmm... no.
Bidoof Protection Military @ Sep 26th 2007 11:34AM
Frank is right, in terms of worldwide shipped units.
-PSP floats about 25 million units shipped.
-360 floats about 10-11 million units shipped.
-PS3 floats about 3-4 million units shipped.
Marty is right, in terms of physical size.
PSP is wee.
360 is not so wee.
And PS3 is FRIGGIN' HUGE.

bigd7387 @ Sep 26th 2007 11:12AM
I had 6 different PSP's because of the quality, 30 or more dead pixels and non working UMD drives. Crappy port games and crappy controls are still the problem. They need to add a second analog nub instead of making it 30% lighter/smaller. I love my DS and the PSP is a nice change but they really do need to fix the real problems if they want to be competitive in the future.
Slinks @ Sep 26th 2007 11:19AM
How would adding a second analogue nub help? That would mean that any game that takes advantage of it would not work on the traditional PSP, thus limiting how many they could sell. Sony's using buisness sense, for once.
NaeemTHM @ Sep 26th 2007 11:25AM
@ Slinks
Dude do you play your PS1 games on your PS2? Of course you do. Do you complain when you can't use your analog sticks on your PS1 games? Of course you dont.
Same thing here. Make the damn PSP2, stick another nub on there, cram a hard drive in there, make is open source, sell it for 300 bucks, and I KNOW Sony would trump the DS.
Well maybe not trump the DS, but it would be close at least every week. Instead of the DS making every system it's beeotch.
arrrgh @ Sep 26th 2007 11:50AM
@ naeem
but that would be smart. (read: not sony)
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Sep 26th 2007 12:26PM
@arrrgh: How is their current strategy not smart with the PSP? Oh sure they screwed up with UMD, but the handheld is selling well. So you expect them to replace the older model just as it is starting to reach peak sales?
Yep, dual nubs would have been nice with the original PSP. But castrating the original model in its prime would be an extraordinarily dumb move.
jcmschwa @ Sep 26th 2007 12:36PM
@ naeem
what slinks is saying is that it would be like trying to play your ps2 games on a ps1, not your ps1 games on a ps2. see the problem now?
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 26th 2007 12:47PM
"Well maybe not trump the DS, but it would be close at least every week. Instead of the DS making every system it's beeotch."
No it wouldn't. The fundamental problem with the PSP is that most of it's games aren't "pick up and play" style games. Certainly most of it's major selling point games.
The only way the PSP(2) would come close to the DS is if Sony stopped urging people to make...well...portable Playstation games.
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Sep 26th 2007 1:03PM
@samfish: "The fundamental problem with the PSP is that most of it's games aren't "pick up and play" style games. Certainly most of it's major selling point games."
Yes, but the fundamental problem you quote is probably the only reason the PSP is still around. Had Sony gone to bat against the Gameboy line directly, they would have been quashed. Instead, they found a niche and started to expand it.
I have music or audio books to fill a "standing in line" gap. I want a portable that comes as close as it can to a console in length, gameplay, and complexity. And while UMD is a turn off, the ability for it to play movies and other associated functions will serve me better for "away games." That's why I'm getting a PSP instead.
The DS, like the Wii, serves a larger market. But Sony would have crashed and burned like everyone else if they had tried to compete head-on for the same market.
The PSP library has "casual games", but I doubt people buy it for the pick up n' play five minutes ideal of the DS.
Dale @ Sep 26th 2007 1:51PM
I have to agree with Samfish.
I have home consoles. The reason I have owned several generations of portable Nintendo systems is because I want games that load quickly and that I can jump in and out of as I please when I am on the move.
If I want to play something deeper, I will do so on my home system, where I have a larger screen, better audio, a stable internet connection and a more accommodating controller at my disposal.
I had a PSP and traded it in for DS games. The loading times were unsuitable for portable play (no matter what they do in the hardware, the sheer amount of data that has to load for many PSP games will still take longer to load than the average DS game); and many of the games themselves didn't allow you to dip in and out.
The line-up has improved greatly since I traded my original in, but not so much that I feel compelled to own another. My iPod and DS combo, while slightly bulkier, does everything the PSP does but a whole lot better.
borland502 (SDF - Macross Ring) @ Sep 26th 2007 2:36PM
"and that I can jump in and out of as I please when I am on the move."
Different people. Different markets. My point is that the PSP serves a different customer. And Sony needed another angle rather than to die in flames against the gameboy.
I'm sure they will attempt to take the lessons (load times, nubs) and improve the product. But they won't do that while the current PSP sells.
Spirit-of @ Sep 26th 2007 2:43PM
I'm still trying to figure out how someone can go thru 6 PSPs, with ALL of them having problems.
I've had my PSP since launch, and I've put it thru hell, and it's still ticking like a Swiss watch. What are you doing with your PSPs letting them sit out in the rain, dousing them with gasoline, and then dragging them behind your car?

Why all the psp hate? Most people on this site should be considered hardcore gamers, and the psp in every aspect in a hardcore portable.
The problem exist where, portable games themsleves have never really been for the hardcore audience. The DS is marketed to the under 12 demographic and it shows. They also have games for casual adult users (brainage etc).
The Sony hate is really annoying and it this case uncalled for. Do the people compaining abouyt this system even have a ds or do thet just like to listen to themsleves complain about a portable that hits their demographic.
herman @ Sep 27th 2007 7:18PM
Stop trying to make sense, the fanboys will kill you for it. the DS is king, and we all know it, but tis nice to see a competitor in the handheld area. There are some really good games for the system, but hater hate, that's what they do.
Geist @ Sep 26th 2007 11:45AM
Well personally speaking, I really don't like the PSP because it's not a very good portable system. Not just the load times and whatnot, but the screen is ridiculously reflective (which means playing in a lit area is more likely to give me a good reflection of myself, and not the game), the thing is juuuust a bit too big to go in a pocket, and the thing feels a little awkward to hold. That's just some hardware complaints.
BlackTye @ Sep 26th 2007 11:51AM
I swear to god, I'm gonna pistol-whip the next sunnuvabitch who says "hardcore gamer"
arrrgh @ Sep 26th 2007 11:54AM
why all the psp hate? try Sony using it as an excuse to try and push YET ANOTHER proprietary format in peoples' faces. UMD is a joke. It's slow and takes up too much power...obviously that's a great idea for a portable system. PSP could have been great. It was a great idea ruined by sony's money lust
Phantom @ Sep 26th 2007 12:57PM
"Sony using it as an excuse to try and push YET ANOTHER proprietaryformat in peoples' faces."
So, what non-proprietary media should Sony utilizes for PSP then? Based on what you said, I guess the media format for Nintendo DS is non-proprietary, no? Perhaps Microsoft is an open source, free-for-all company with the main focus on gamers instead of shareholders? Maybe Microsoft will release Halo 1/2/3 for all next gen consoles so PS3 and Wii owners won't be "force" to buy Xbox 360 to enjoy the epic story line of Master Chief's struggles to save the world?
I think "I just hate Sony!" would have make more sense.

I will finally buy the PSP. I'm going for the Daxter bundle because I get a silver PSP, a game starring a kick-ass character spun off a kick-ass game series, a 1GB memory stick, and a Family Guy UMD. That right there is a value of around $250 for only $200, and since I already have DVD sets of Family Guy, I can sell the UMD and get even more money. Then I will buy Mega Man Powered Up and Dracula X Chronicles and MAYBE Crisis Core.

Garrett @ Sep 26th 2007 1:07PM
I like PSP, and having the system since day one I've had to put up with an endless amount of shit from idiot fanboys telling me the DS is more fun and websites that pretend to be credible saying stuff about how the PSP has no games and is a mistake and so forth.
It has really never been the case. PSP launched with a hell of a lineup and that fall and winter even more good games came out. its really just summer when few PSP games are released. The games and system have only gotten better too.
I find encouragement in the few times major websites actually admit that the PSP is a fine system.
required @ Sep 26th 2007 1:24PM
I agree.
daddycool @ Sep 26th 2007 1:55PM
I got my PSP for homebrew. I never cared it didn't have any games, I just played SNES and Genesis on it. I buy games now though. I travel a lot now I'm getting God of War first day. and PSP is my main system. It's pretty good now. I know I kind of want a 2000 but I can't really justify it just for being lighter.
I still hate Sony though. I only deal with them when I have to. That means PS2 and PSP. PSP is a must have in my book.
required @ Sep 26th 2007 2:21PM
the PSP has ALWAYS HAD a ton of great games, if you avoided them early on because you were into homebrew I suggest you check out the earlier titles because they're great. For example Burnout Legends (2005) is in a lot of ways better than Burnout Dominator (2007). http://psp.ign.com/index/reviews.html
Ska Oreo @ Sep 26th 2007 2:26PM
It's just to bad that it's getting filled to the brim with MGS and FF games. I mean unless you have an obsession with those two games, then there still really no appeal to the psp. Unless you're into some ratchet and clank.
bl13 @ Sep 26th 2007 3:09PM
Your comment is so retarded I'm not even sure where to begin.
required @ Sep 26th 2007 2:28PM
note: if you go here http://psp.ign.com/index/reviews.html and show score and sort by date posted you'll see that the system has had a lot of great (8 and higher) games since day one.
Superstar90 @ Sep 26th 2007 7:54PM
sure its great, but it just has watered down ports/sequels of ps2 games so far. (GTA, killzone, burnout, godfather, rachet and clank etc. etc.) those games were great on ps2, but they don't work as well as on PSP. the real good PSP games are stuff like loco roco, daxter, the new clank game etc. stuff that we haven't seen elswhere and hopefully WILL not see elsewhere in the future. nintendo gave its handhelds exclusive titles and never once decided to completely port/sequel them to GC or Wii
imo handhelds need their own exclusives and they need to be quick games with little to no load times that you can pick up and play. but hey, thats just what i think.
Mr Slavio @ Sep 26th 2007 4:28PM
I jumped on the Daxter bundle when WalMart had it mispriced at $170. I gave the PSP a lot of shit, but I have to admit, it's a fine system with some very decent games on it. I would have never known though. I think the problem is in the marketing.
KiwiLord @ Sep 26th 2007 5:18PM
Skipping what are sure to be nothing but flaming posts, when does the PSP-2000 core actually come out? Is it Oct 1st, or later?

I need to get me one of those. My girlfriend and I both have one and we love them. The lighter weight alone is really appealing since I play it a lot laying down which is a killer on my hands. Hooking it up the the TV is just sweet, sweet icing on the already delicious cake!
