Drool: Orange Box goes gold!
The wait is almost over, as Valve's The Orange Box mega-compilation has gone gold! October 10 is the date to circle on your calendars, as the package (which comes stuffed with Half-Life 2, Episodes 1 and 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2) heads to retail that day for both Xbox 360 and PC. The recently delayed PS3 version is still expected to ship a few weeks later. Maybe now the folks at Valve can take a break and finally deal with those Little Sisters. In case you've been living under a rock, The Orange Box will retail for $50 for the PC at retail, with the console variety demanding a bit more from your wallet with a "next-gen price" of $60. Of course, those who pre-purchased the collection over Steam will enjoy an additional 10% cost savings, though it's likely they're too wrapped up in the Team Fortress 2 beta to care.

Speaking of orange, I'm eating cantaloupe right now!
NATO_Duke @ Sep 27th 2007 2:52PM
This makes no sense, has it gone orange or gold - they need to make up their minds!
blehh @ Sep 27th 2007 2:58PM
i'll probably rent it for the ps3. i'd buy it if came with gary's mod hah
FOXHOUND @ Sep 27th 2007 3:37PM
Since I doubt there's any cross-platform play(PC-PS3-X360); I'm debating on whether to get the PS3 or PC one. The choice would be more obvious if my PC was a bit better...
HineyWipe @ Sep 27th 2007 2:58PM
Orange you glad they didn't say banana!
Marty @ Sep 27th 2007 2:58PM
I'm excited about this, even though I'm getting my copy via Steam... the Team Fortress 2 beta has been absolutely awesome so far, and I can't wait to see how things go with HL2:Ep2 and Portal.
Good stuff, Valve! Now let your staff enjoy BioShock - they've earned it! :D
kbunch @ Sep 27th 2007 3:02PM
I already preordered via Steam and have been playing TF3 beta. Yeah it pretty much rox0rs your s0xors. I am looking forward to portal. How could you even consider playing the orange box on a console? These games are best enjoyed on a PC like all FPS.
kbunch @ Sep 27th 2007 3:04PM
*TF2
Ska Oreo @ Sep 27th 2007 3:50PM
You do realize, because apparently you don't, that that's entirely opinionated. Meaning if you play mostly pc games, you'll be comfortable with a mouse and key pad. If you mostly play console games, you're more likely to be more comfortable playing a controller. Depends on the person.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 27th 2007 4:18PM
I play 99% console games, but when it comes to FPS games I prefer the keyboard and mouse!
Ska Oreo @ Sep 27th 2007 6:15PM
and I prefer controllers. Like I said, this issue is entirely opinionated.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 27th 2007 9:53PM
Well my opinion is different!
Kerber @ Sep 27th 2007 3:04PM
One thing I'm still not clear on: Can steam users choose to purchase individual components of the glorious orange box?
For instance, since I already own HL 1, 2, and episode 1, I only want to buy episode 2 (and probably Portal and TF2).
Is that possible? Is it cheaper?
Naota @ Sep 27th 2007 3:12PM
It isn't cheaper to buy individually, and with that, you can buy them individually after they're released.
Spencer @ Sep 27th 2007 3:24PM
If you already own Half Life 2, Episode 1, and/or Lost Coast, you'll apparently receive a gift code for each of those titles to give away to a friend when you buy the Orange Box. I already own all three but pre-ordered the Orange Box because it ends up being cheaper than just buying the ones I don't already have separately, and I got access to the Team Fortress 2 bets.
ScreamingSkull @ Sep 27th 2007 3:03PM
Where's my TFC2 multiplayer demo on XBL!?
Matt B @ Sep 27th 2007 3:08PM
I really wish there was a Counter-Strike update in this package.:/
Oh well, back to gun game.
Einhanderkiller @ Sep 27th 2007 6:41PM
I heard that a Counter-Strike: Source update is to be released soon. It supposedly adds two new game modes.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 27th 2007 3:10PM
I'm actually interested in this. Not because of Half-life though (haven't played the first one) but because of Team Fortress 2. That game is going to be sick.
kbunch @ Sep 27th 2007 3:12PM
* It is sick. The beta is out right now.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 27th 2007 3:17PM
meh I'll wait until the game comes out. I'm more of a pc guy anyways.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 27th 2007 3:18PM
I meant console guy. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME!!!
Jeff @ Sep 27th 2007 3:20PM
Same. Team Fortress looks buck, but I just can't get into HL 2.
ReverendGadgetBoy @ Sep 27th 2007 7:40PM
Ill tell you whats wrong with you: youd rather use a controller than mouse/keyboard.
actually, im just kidding. to each his own. myself, i find it immeasurably quicker to use a mouse to look around, but thats just me.
ogvor @ Sep 27th 2007 3:14PM
FINALLY! Half Life 2 is my all time favorite game and Valve has had a few... problems with delays.
Shig @ Sep 27th 2007 3:17PM
TF2 is gonna be hella fun.
megaStryke @ Sep 27th 2007 3:31PM
I hear all manner of juicy stuff concerning TF2, but I'm more excited for Portal. In fact, that'll probably be the only thing I buy through Steam. I'm a sucker for wacky physics-/spacial-defying puzzles.
Shagittarius @ Sep 27th 2007 3:32PM
Does anyone remember what happened in Episode 1?
I have the same problem with Halo even though I just replayed Halo 2 about a month ago I still don't remember what happened.
ScreamingSkull @ Sep 27th 2007 3:38PM
Masterchief wasn't playable for the last mission.
T3H WICKERMAN @ Sep 27th 2007 4:27PM
There is always teh wikipedia. use it love it.
Egster @ Sep 27th 2007 6:37PM
In short: you escaped City 17 after destroying the freaky suppresion device generator thingy.
Blazur @ Sep 27th 2007 3:33PM
Yaye! Cannot wait to get my hands on this game. I've already taken the 10th off from work so I can commence fragging.
Excluding StarCraft, I'd have to say Team Fortress Classic is a close 2nd for my all-time fave game, closely followed by Unreal Tournament 2004.
Demoman and Spy FTW!
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Sep 27th 2007 3:33PM
I think I'll get this for 360. I'm usually a PC guy when it comes to shooters, but I just haven't been feeling the PC gaming lately.
Course, that will all change when starcraft 2 lands.
jsn @ Sep 27th 2007 3:44PM
dude..wtf..get it on the pc. I've been playing tf2 for a while now it's awesome. Best online fps experience I've had in years. You don't need a massive rig to run it well either.
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Sep 27th 2007 4:20PM
I know, its just my PC is usually busy doing other things (like ripping my massive DVD collection). Plus the setup is less than ideal for gaming. I'm talking about comfort and aesthetics, not hardware. I have the hardware covered. But I got no surround sound (setup), I don't have a PC chair for gaming (chair from kitchen table, ouch), and the fact I'm much more comfy on my couch, and I NEVER play multiplayer.
I'm just transitioning from a PC guy to a console guy. My living room setup is much much sweeter.
FOXHOUND @ Sep 27th 2007 3:38PM
Not that Orange Box isn't a good deal or anything('cause it is); but all I want is TF2. Never really got into Half-Life... and Portal hasn't hooked me.
Ska Oreo @ Sep 27th 2007 3:48PM
same here. Though portal does sound interesting.
mitchellgreen @ Sep 27th 2007 3:50PM
This will rock. (provided I get my xbox back from service in time) no haloz, no TF2 for me.
WiNG @ Sep 27th 2007 3:53PM
After playing TF2 for the last couple days, let me just say it alone would be worth $60. Its multiplayer insantiy is awesome, and is good for any kind of player?
-Are you a CS AWP whore? Be a sniper?
-Like RTS games, making buildings? Be an Engineer
-Like Unreal Tourney twitch gameplay? Be a scout
-Do you really like fire? Pyro time.
-Are you the kind of undermining, backstabbing tool that plays Mesmers in Guild Wars, or Blue Counterspells in Magic? Be a Spy
-Do you like just helping out? MEDIC!
*there is no reason to play Soldier or Demoman or Heavy
skrame @ Sep 27th 2007 4:03PM
undermining, backstabbing tool that plays Mesmers in Guild Wars, or Blue Counterspells in Magic?
I don't understand a word you're saying. That's why I'll be getting it for 360.
rom @ Sep 27th 2007 4:00PM
Half-Life is one of those games I'll never get for the consoles. PC version for me please.
Poisoned Al @ Sep 27th 2007 4:04PM
Gah! I'm broke, and I can't decide to get the Pc or the 360 version.
PC: Cheaper, keyboard & mouse.
360: Live friends and no dicking around to set up TF2 games.
Nuggh! If only you could buy TF2 on Live marketplace!
vinny @ Sep 27th 2007 4:12PM
this game is one hell of a deal with all that it comes with, add another damn 360 title to kill my wallet
Dr. Klaw @ Sep 27th 2007 4:14PM
Team Fortress 2 is the best multiplayer FPS experience of all time.
Yeah, that's right, I said it.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Sep 27th 2007 4:20PM
So the PC version has better graphics and is cheaper and lets me use my keyboard and mouse? Oh glorious day, put me in the box!
Apreche @ Sep 27th 2007 4:30PM
TF2 beta is still pretty buggy, especially the Linux server. Expect some serious patches to come through the pipe.
OrganicShadow @ Sep 27th 2007 4:41PM
I'm actually getting PC(preordered already) and PS3 versions, but to those only getting it on console: have fun trying to rocket jump.
For some reason it seems harder to do than TFC- even on PC. At least the rocket trajectory is better now, and it's easier to lead people and tell where your rocket will be with the timings and all. The rockets in TFC always tricked me because they SEEMED like they were going fast but actually weren't. Maybe it's the FOV.
o well
Blurrz @ Sep 27th 2007 4:39PM
Never played the Half-Life series, so this will be my first game. Do I need to catch up?
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Sep 27th 2007 4:48PM
Not really. If you didn't play HL1, you'll miss a few inside jokes, and some of the aliens might be kinda confusing, but you won't miss too much.
That said, you should go and play HL1 because its a stellar game.
fester @ Sep 28th 2007 10:21AM
Yes, most definitely play HL2[1] before you try HL2[2]!!It is a chronology, so to speak. The game is truly awesome-I seldom ever finish games, but I have played HL2 to the credits no less than 4 times. I'm sure it will compete with the HALO series as being among the BEST fps games ever. Enjoy-you are in for a treat!!
