FCC filing reveals new PS3 model, few details
It has been rumored, repeatedly, that Sony intends to unveil a 40GB PlayStation 3. While this may not be proof, a recent FCC exhibit from Sony reveals a PS3 with a new model number, CECHG01.
All the apparent specifications -- WiFi, Bluetooth, CPU, etc. -- are identical to the other PS3 models. As Engadget points out, Sony likes to use a new model number for every hard drive tier. Whether or not this is an increase or decrease in HDD capacity remains to be seen, but it does look like Sony is prepared to unveil another choice for potential PS3 owners.

Nobody loves you.
dsub @ Sep 27th 2007 3:23PM
I didn't know speaking the truth made you a troll. Seriously, why do you think they are making a cheaper SKU? Obviously the more expensive ones aren't selling. I swear, you narrow-minded fanboy turds are so biased that even when someone speaks the truth about your beloved brand you attack at him.
What? Do you think the big wigs sitting at Sony were at a board meeting trying to decide what to do with the PS3 and someone threw out the idea of making a cheaper model that would perhaps sell better and they called it blasphemy? I think not. Perhaps your logic would lead you to believe that Sony should release a new "Please buy our new most expensive SKU" model for $699 that comes with a 200GB HDD. That sure would sell well.
I hope you are intelligent enough to sense my sarcasm in that last statement.
I agree with Fernando. This is the "Please buy our new cheapest SKU version" what else do you THINK it is?!?!?
Trev @ Sep 27th 2007 3:33PM
What else do I think it is?
Well, people complained about the lack of rumble, so they added it. People have been vocal about wanting a lower price, so they're working on giving that to them.
I call it "listening to the consumer".
JKPierce @ Sep 27th 2007 3:36PM
"I hope you are intelligent enough to sense my sarcasm in that last statement."
Huh. I thought the entire thing was sarcasm in reference to what Microsoft did.
If people say they want a cheaper system, a SKU sans a few non-essential features sounds a pretty intelligent response. To see fault in that is remarkable.
dsub @ Sep 27th 2007 4:22PM
I don't see fault in that. It makes perfect sense. All Fernando did was put it into a different context by saying "Please buy our new cheaper sku edition" and the fanboys attacked him.
I mean, that's what Sony IS saying by doing this right? "Please buy our new cheaper SKU"
I was merely pointing out the fact that Fernando did nothing to be a troll here, yet he was attacked as one. It's not like he made a post ranting about how not even a cheaper SKU will help the PS3 because it just sucks so bad.
upz @ Sep 27th 2007 4:52PM
"I hope you are intelligent enough to sense my sarcasm in that last statement."
You do realize that you take all the wit out of sarcasm when you point it out? And if you feel like you do need to point it out, chances are, it's not everyone else that's stupid.

The article on 'The Register' said that the FCC mentions that there were no card reader slots and only 2 USB ports, versus the 4 on the exisiting models...
cybereality @ Sep 27th 2007 2:12PM
Is this supposed to make people actually buy a PS3? Keep taking away features Sony, I'm sure thats just what the consumers want. Less features. While they're at it they should make an SD PS3 without BluRay to appeal to the Wii crowd.
JKPierce @ Sep 27th 2007 2:20PM
Er, yeah. Consumers do want less features, because features (such as the SD card readers) cost money to put into the SKU.
There's a correlation in there somewhere, where it takes the given monetary unit to produce and manufacture given additions and hardware.
LiasonAngel08 @ Sep 27th 2007 2:22PM
I totally agree...
A lower price and a different sku is not going to change the fact that it barely has any noteworthy games right now.
It just proves how desperate they are.
KiraXD @ Sep 27th 2007 2:23PM
what features are they taking away? none, you troll...
if you actually read the article it said "All the apparent specifications -- WiFi, Bluetooth, CPU, etc. -- are identical to the other PS3 models"
idiot.
Kazi @ Sep 27th 2007 2:32PM
Consumers don't want less features for the same price. Compare the 60gig version to the 80gig version. The 60g version was a better package. 20 more gigs isn't that expensive, definitely not worth $100 more.
For some reason they did a clearance sale on the 60gig to make room for the 80gig model. The 40gig that's rumored will probably be the same thing as the 80gig model. The 20gig will be the better deal, but the 40gig wont be any cheaper and will take it's place (even though the 20gig doesn't exist on shelves anymore, unlike the 60gig so there won't be any clearance sales for us).
Really, they're just cheaper versions of the first SKUs to minimize their loss.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 27th 2007 2:40PM
"Er, yeah. Consumers do want less features, because features (such as the SD card readers) cost money to put into the SKU."
The now defunct 20GB PS3 strongly disagrees with you.
JKPierce @ Sep 27th 2007 3:00PM
As soon as the 20gig left, though, there was an unmistakeable outcry for less. Now it's particularly important, as a former 'premuim' SKU sits at the lower end of the pricing spectrum.
Fewer features for fewer pesos is a big opportunity to miss.
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Sep 27th 2007 3:48PM
Sam, nobody bought the 20 gig because A) Stores hardly stocked them because they got better margins on the 60 and B) It was launched to an early adopter crowd who shunned it as well as C) It was 500 dollars.
The 20 gig would thrive perfectly fine now at a 400 or 350 dollar price point.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Sep 27th 2007 3:53PM
Oh, don't kid yourself. There's been an "unmistakable outcry for less" since shortly after launch. People just don't want to pay that much money for the PS3. That doesn't mean that want less features.
If people wanted less, there would have been a far greater demand for the 20gb model while it existed. Consumers didn't collectively come to the realization that they had it OH SO GOOD just after Sony canned the 20bg. It was actually met with more of a "Good Riddance" more than anything else.
JKPierce @ Sep 27th 2007 3:56PM
Crono said it better than I.
upz @ Sep 27th 2007 5:10PM
Sam, you seem to overlook the fact that, as Crono mentioned, selling to an early adopter crowd is a different game from selling to the much more price sensitive mass market. (Apple exploits this better than any other company. Why they do, or ever did, deserve the brand loyalty they enjoy is another rant for another day.)
My point is, there's a reason why Visio and AKAI are late to market, lacking in features, yet still sell so well. It seems like the video game industry is taking this insight to heart moreso this generation than ever before.
B1gC72 @ Sep 27th 2007 5:30PM
well to you guys talking about the 60GB to 80GB switch, they did it because they didnt put the Emotion Engine in the 80GB which handled backwards compatibility on the 60GB and 20GB. its essentially a PS2 inside the PS3. they didnt put that into the 80GB (it now emulates through software instead of hardware), therefore cutting production cost, and added 20GB of storage and a game to make it seem like a deal. why they didnt just start making 60GB without the EE is beyond me, kinda like what the (god-forsaken) 360 is doing with the premium model with the HDMI port.
either way, if they could release a 40GB at like $400 by Xmas, they may have a shot to at least stay in the picture til next year cause Nintendo and Microsoft are bringing the wood this holiday season.

sony, no matter how many times you switch hdd's sizes, people still dont want your lame bluray player
Forsakyn @ Sep 27th 2007 2:21PM
The new PS3 SKU dramatically reduced its costs by also removing the blu-ray drive. Unfortunately they didn't think far enough ahead on that one...
Knight Marquise @ Sep 27th 2007 5:05PM
Wasn't it Sony lambasting MS about "Multiple" SKU's? And "Confusing" the customer???
Wow. Sony's worse enemy is.....Sony.
JKPierce @ Sep 27th 2007 2:25PM
To reduce costs, they'll manufacture the consoles via Chinese children and monkeys. Failure rates will increase from 30-40%, but it's worth it to save a few pennies. It's not like anyone will care.
Packaging will also be simplified, mainstreamed; we don't need so much pesty plastic in the spindles to hold the games in their cases. There might be some scratching, but we'll be applauded in our ability to send replacements in a few weeks.
mafafu @ Sep 27th 2007 2:30PM
Don't they already do that?
Robobagins @ Sep 27th 2007 3:16PM
So wait, 30-40% failure rate, disc scrtching...you're saying they're making 360's now?

This model lacks a Cell processor, and a GPU. It is just a Blu-Ray player disguised as a PS3, and the remote just happens to look like a sixasses controller.
DarthDavid @ Sep 27th 2007 2:30PM
I still think the 60GB EE is the best value, after they reveal the 40GB hopefully they'll mark down the remaining stock of 60GBs to $450. I was thinking about finally getting a 60GB sometime this/next week while I still can, I guess I have to wait til the 40GB is announced......damn I hate playing this waiting game!!!
flcl @ Sep 27th 2007 2:30PM
For $400 id buy it. It'd be nice to have a console that can play oblivion and not brick halfway through.
mafafu @ Sep 27th 2007 2:31PM
This is the model with comes with BBQ utensils and an apron that says "Kiss The Cook".
Paul @ Sep 27th 2007 2:33PM
tsk tsk it was only bound to happen...
Jeremy @ Sep 27th 2007 2:34PM

required @ Sep 27th 2007 3:58PM
déjà vu because the same things were said about the PSP
refresher: if you go here http://psp.ign.com/index/reviews.html and show score and sort by date posted you'll see that the system has had a lot of great (8 and higher) games since day one.
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Sep 27th 2007 4:39PM
really funny required, because dispite that, the PSP still has a stigma of lacking good games (mostly because the good games it has exist in a superior form on a home console, but that is neither here nor there. Also, the PSP is still selling half as well as its (weaker) competition, just like the PS3.
You think we can call the Wii/PS3 race the same way we called the PSP/DS race? I think so.
Hiroken @ Sep 27th 2007 2:35PM
You guys are fucking hypocrites. When the PS3 came out at $600 and every feature known to man, you said it was too expensive. The other model with less features was still too expensive.
Now they are giving you a model with nearly all of the features (if you read the article!)--Kotaku says it's simply missing 2 USB's out of the 4 and the SD Card readers--and will likely be at a price point all of you have been clamoring for: $399
And what do you do? Bitch and moan.
~
eclipse27 @ Sep 27th 2007 2:44PM
thats all most of them are just cheap hypocrites.....there are some people that complain on the Wii being too high.....pathetic
Count Noobula @ Sep 27th 2007 2:44PM
I'm not a hypocrite, I never wanted one in the first place.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 27th 2007 2:44PM
price hasnt been announced yet
and there's still only like 2 games to get for ps3
JKPierce @ Sep 27th 2007 3:06PM
"I never wanted one in the first place."
Articles like this will get the attention of people like this; they don't own the console or generally dislike it, so they endlessly insult the product itself and those that own it. Discussion is out of the question; self-glorifying justification for their purchases and nonsensical hyperbole are the only acceptable courses of action.
If you see a lack of intelligence in this practice, there is hope for you.
