New Blue Dragon DLC ups the difficulty for free
For those out there who thought Mistwalker's Blue Dragon was too easy for your tastes, Microsoft has just released new content aimed at upping the ante for the RPG's difficulty. Best of all? It's free.
Dubbed the Ultra Hard Mod, the new content has three aspects. The first is Game Plus, which allows you to start a new game using a saved file from near the end. The other two are specifically for the masochistic: Hard Mode, reportedly twice as challenging as normal, and Impossible, which is meant to play with characters starting at level 50 or higher. (If you want to do the Impossible at level 10, however, by all means go for it. Let us know how that works out.)

Ah, game plus, good old throwback from the days of Chrono Trigger. Good to see them trying to fix a problem with the Chrono Trigger/Cross games where plus just meant you breezed through without a problem.
However, Blue Dragon just isn't that good to go though a second time. Great entry level for someone who hasn't done the console RPG before (ie most Xbox 360 owner), but Eternal Sonata has taken over the RPG department here.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Sep 28th 2007 7:30PM
And even Eternal Sonata is a few steps back from some of the great PS2 RPGs.

No arguments here, but still, I can enjoy the wonderful art direction and music.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Sep 28th 2007 7:07PM
Does it also include a main character I don't want to slaughter, remove the shit jokes (I'm dead serious. That monster you see above is described in-game as being armored in "poo".) and most importantly, replace the boss fight music with something that doesn't have the worst singer and lyrics of any song ever?
If not, then screw this DLC. The game's still going to suck balls, so why bother?
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 28th 2007 7:53PM
boy you sure hate this game. have you played it? yeah the poo snakes are a little silly, and the boss music is awful, I just mute the tv when it plays. All the other songs are pretty good.
I like this game, it's like ff5 mixed with dragon quest, and it worked well
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Sep 28th 2007 7:57PM
Yes, I have played it. Behind Two Worlds and Enchanted Arms it's the worst RPG on the system, and probably in my top 5 worst 360 games.

I'm with ya - after an hour of this game, I realized that games like FFXII and Oblivion have successfully streamlined battles to the point where turn based RPGs seem tedious anymore. On top of that, when the main character is the antithesis of a compelling protagonist...
DL content or not, this game is unfortunately a polished turd floating in the toilet of Y2K.

The portrait of the kid on the right looks like Hitler.
...
Time to buy a 360.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 28th 2007 7:48PM
cool. you'll enjoy it
and people were already accessing the hard mode and newgame+, they just had to make a japanese silver account and download the content with that. nice that they finally added it for us. a couple weeks late though

I love Blue Dragon and this will definitely keep me occupied after I beat Halo 3.
CaptainAmericaX @ Sep 28th 2007 7:57PM
I LOVE Eternal Sonata and I hope that some DLC is released for it as soon as possible.
Rob Accomando @ Sep 28th 2007 8:19PM
Isn't Eternal Sonata a 20 hour RPG? I had the impression that Blue Dragon > Eternal Sonata.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 28th 2007 8:24PM
length doesnt = goodness, fyi
but more people seem to like eternal sonata. i haven't picked it up yet, but I loved the demo. I'm in the final dungeon of blue dragon right now, it's good too

Blooh since you know all about this game would you say is worth buying at full price? ,as much as I enjoy JRPG and well I simply love the Blue dragon demo in fact I still have it the reviews seem to be contrary.
How long is it?, are there a lot of quests in the game? Because I hate RPGs where you have to slay a S*it load of monsters to level up a la pokémon.
Really I would like a fast RPG, Something like Oblivion you know a long but satisfactory game, because there isn’t a moment in oblivion that bores me except when I have to wait for the stores to open.
What I hate about JRPG are the predetermine characters you know the Mage, the Healer the Fighter etc etc like in Final fantasy but I see you can custom your character in Blue dragon, I know I can’t change the characters but at least I can change their classes.
Oh and the story is really good?, I mean even if it’s something like Digimon is Ok but really I want a good story that doesn’t bore me to tears like Guild wars.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Sep 28th 2007 11:24PM
i've never played digimon/pokemon/etc games, or guild wars, but this story is pretty good. It's a bit slow paced on disc 1, but it's not a grindfest if you don't want it to be. Just fight most enemies in your way while walking around and you'll be a decent enough level most of the game. I'm at the start of the final dungeon and I have about 80 hours on my game, but some of it was afk, and some was afk class leveling at the end. There are a couple of secret bosses that can be tough, and lots of sidequests.
I've spent more money on worse games. So sure, get it, and then ebay/trade it when you're done if you want to.
David G @ Sep 29th 2007 4:44AM
At least they gave something for free, so props for that.
Mesoian @ Sep 29th 2007 2:45PM
So did they fix the glitch where you can't get certain achievements during new game plus that was found in the japanese version?
Klink258 @ Sep 29th 2007 6:52PM
I really want to play this game- but I'm too busy with halo 3.
phoenix @ Oct 21st 2007 11:29AM
it's a really cool game but im stuck on that headless horseman thing...
can some 1 tell me how to beat it?
