Finally! With Nintendo of America's executive washroom looking
emptier and
emptier these days, it's increasingly important that we not mangle the surnames of the few execs who remain. We're pretty sure we've got Perrin Kaplan down (though we're
still not sure if she's sticking around), but Reggie Fils-Aime's last name has always presented something of a problem. Everywhere, gamers and journalists have ... paused before uttering his
unique name. "Did I just say that right? PHILS-AMY?"
Well,
MTV's Multiplayer blog went right to the source and asked Reggie, How the crap do you pronounce your last name? Watch as Reggie kicks ass and enunciates names. "It's not PHILS-AIM. It's not PHILS-AMY. It's FEE-SUH-MAY." Really?
Fils-Aime is pronounced "
fee-suh-may"? Yeah, err, that's totally how we've always pronounced it.

Fills-Amy LOL!
I didn't know people pronounce it like that.
Mr. P @ Oct 1st 2007 6:16PM
I've been pronouncing it "Phil's aim" until now, and will continue to do so, as it the cool thing to do.
Ignatius @ Oct 1st 2007 11:38PM
I could have sworn it was "fees-a-me"
Looks cooler saying it like that, oh well.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:10AM
FEES-A-ME SEYMOUR!
Konny @ Oct 1st 2007 4:10PM
He must have been the reference design for Wario.. that is one butt ugly dude.
Zertoss @ Oct 1st 2007 4:11PM
He's the man behind the face of Donkey Kong.
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 1st 2007 4:17PM
Why do you think Nintendo is so keen on face training?
zwarrior @ Oct 1st 2007 7:34PM
Is judging other people's looks your way of compensating for something?
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 1st 2007 8:35PM
I compensate for my giant penis with my tiny clown car and by calling everybody beautiful. How 'bout you beautiful guys?
Nobuyuki @ Oct 1st 2007 4:16PM
As a French major his name has always pissed me off. If you want the last E to be said Reggie you've gotta accent it!
Viridium @ Oct 1st 2007 5:39PM
Have to agree there. Fils-Aime would just be "fees-ehm". You want the trailing "ay"? Then add the aigu!
Fils-Aimé FTW!
zwarrior @ Oct 1st 2007 7:32PM
the accent doesnt exist in the English alphabet
ThornedVenom @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:45AM
We should so petition to make Reggie change his last name into the French version one!
matt @ Oct 1st 2007 4:16PM
I pretty much shat bricks when the internet started video-streaming E3 and the announcer said, "Presenting Reggie Fees-Ah-May!"
It was like all Ls in the world cried out in pain and were suddenly silenced.
Jeff @ Oct 1st 2007 5:10PM
I see what you did there.
Richard Mitchell @ Oct 1st 2007 4:16PM
Huh. And all this time I thought it was "FEE-SAM"
teknomusik @ Oct 1st 2007 4:18PM
I'll still be pronouncing it PHILS-A-ME :P
playwhutyalike @ Oct 1st 2007 4:19PM
He also likes to be called Reggie F-Nuts. No, no he doesn't.
NaeemTHM @ Oct 1st 2007 4:22PM
Fee-Suh-May Fee-Suh-May Ooh La La!
Christopher Grant @ Oct 1st 2007 4:26PM
Hahaha! Shampoo commercials are funny.
DEEZNUTZ @ Oct 1st 2007 4:26PM
Dude is fugly
Ska Oreo @ Oct 1st 2007 10:26PM
and yet he can destroy you with one quick blow.
Diskoboy @ Oct 1st 2007 4:29PM
Now repeat after me:
"Who gives a shit??"
So how exactly is this news?
Crono (NDF - French Taunting from Holy Grail Ring) @ Oct 1st 2007 4:36PM
I've been wondering how to say this guys name for years.
So I care, and it is news to me.
Christopher Grant @ Oct 1st 2007 4:40PM
TIP: asking why and how something is news is a bannable offense. Don't like it, move along. It won't be long until there's something else you can (hopefully) accept as worthy of your time.
BPM (FDF - Hypno-Toad) @ Oct 1st 2007 4:54PM
Don't you mean "PROTIP," Chris? :P
Diskoboy @ Oct 1st 2007 6:25PM
Go ahead and ban me then, Chris - I'll be back by the end of the week. I have every right to say this article is a complete waste of time.
Welcome to the world of journalism, Chris - criticism is part of the territory. Deal with it....
JodyAnthony (FDF - Hedonism Bot) @ Oct 1st 2007 6:52PM
they are bloggers, not journalists
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 1st 2007 8:52PM
It's news because he's the president of Nintendo of America silly! A lot of the stuff here is about gaming culture or just game company-related in general, like when key figures get promotions or sell land or move headquarters or open new branches or leave companies or die. It's what makes this site more interesting than a stack of previews and reviews.
I never took French (Spanish and Japanese ftw dudez). The hard S caught me by surprise. The best I'd heard an interviewer say before was Fee-Zuh-May, and that's what I'd been using between then and now.
Grant @ Oct 1st 2007 9:18PM
exactly,
joystiq is more about videogame culture and all that encompasses it.
If an icon of the industry your interested takes the time to make a video about his pronunciation, obviously it's been said wrong a couple hundred times.
Hell, if Reggie went crazy and took a dump outside his house, that would make joystiq as well. If you don't like it, go read IGN or 1UP.
WiNG @ Oct 1st 2007 4:31PM
OH YEAH well his named means something like "Beloved son" or "boy-loved" or "lovely boy butt face" depending on how you translate it.
Viridium @ Oct 1st 2007 5:42PM
Well, fils is literally "son" and the root of Aime would be the verb aimer, "to like".
The Purveyor of Justice @ Oct 1st 2007 5:58PM
LOL!!!! Lovely Boy Butt Face!!! Yeah, definitely gotta be that one!!! Hilarious!!!
Dio @ Oct 1st 2007 8:55PM
I always thought it translated to "boy love" XD
BPM (FDF - Hypno-Toad) @ Oct 2nd 2007 1:49AM
So, Fils-Aime is French for the Japanese word "yaoi?"
J-Guy @ Oct 1st 2007 4:31PM
Can't we just continue calling him Reggie?
GMonkey @ Oct 1st 2007 4:36PM
It means his kids love him.
Didn't you monkeys have French in high school? Son and Love are pretty simple words
Suave @ Oct 2nd 2007 12:58PM
Actually, it's "loved son", but nice try.
I'm Sick @ Oct 1st 2007 4:40PM
Wow, people are still watching Mtv?
Mr Khan @ Oct 1st 2007 4:47PM
Damn, i was off
I was pronouncing it Fil-aye-m
This is why i took Spanish, and not French (sadly our only options)
Ethan @ Oct 1st 2007 4:48PM
For some reason I can't see this video, or any other mtv video. Confusing.
Farseer @ Oct 1st 2007 4:54PM
That's no mystery... MTV hasn't shown a video in years!
hvnlysoldr @ Oct 1st 2007 7:21PM
MTV only has videos for North America.
T3H WICKERMAN @ Oct 1st 2007 4:49PM
I ll call u what ever I want you fookin troll faced bastard. Perhaps he is the only person immune to his name taking power.
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 1st 2007 8:40PM
Damn straight. You can't go around taking names with a name like "Bob Citizen." You need a name so crazy nobody else can take it.
BPM (FDF - Hypno-Toad) @ Oct 1st 2007 4:54PM
You-Bee-Soft.
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Oct 1st 2007 5:03PM
All glory to the hypnotoad.
Viridium @ Oct 1st 2007 5:44PM
I actually didn't know that one for a little bit. Debated between "oo-bee-soft" and "you-bee-soft" before I heard it spoken.
Nahendra-Roseangel @ Oct 1st 2007 5:08PM
You Guys Better Pronounce It Good. Reggie Is Haitian And Haitians Don't Play With People Who Pronounce Their Names Wrong (We Beat The Up).
Representing Haiti The Best Country In The World Go Reggie
T3H WICKERMAN @ Oct 1st 2007 5:23PM
