SCEA announces "PlayStation: The Official Magazine"
44
Miss the Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM), Ziff Davis' all-things-PlayStation 'zine that was unceremoniously axed last November just before the launch of the PlayStation 3? Well, Sony has announced that Future US – publisher of other fine magazine products like Official Xbox Magazine, PC Gamer, and ... uh, Pregnancy – has signed up to publish the newly announced PlayStation: The Official Magazine scheduled to hit newsstands in November, and run 13 issues a year (that's once a month using Sony's proprietary calendar technology).
Of course, Future has also published the Official Sony PlayStation Magazine in the UK since 1995, and PSM (the independent PlayStation Magazine) in the US, so the whole Sony magazine thing is old hat for the folks at Future, we're sure. Speaking of PSM, editorial duties for the new mag will be handled by Rob Smith, former editor-in-chief of PSM, leading us to assume that the publisher won't be maintaining two PlayStation magazines, one "official" and one "independent." It's too bad, we'd take the acronym PSM over POM any day.

Fernando is married? He looks like he's 17 in that picture, and he seems to spend all day on this site because he's always one of the first to comment!

What do you think they'll name their 13th month? Cellember, Sonyuary, Playstationust are all good ideas, in my opinion.

Most, if not all, magazines published by Future run 13 issues a year. I know Official Xbox Magazine does, and I'm fairly certain Maximum PC does as well.

Janine:
I bet you like to read a lot, too.
Egon:
Print is dead.
Janine:
Oh, that's very interesting to me, I read a lot myself. Some people think I'm too intellectual but I think it's a fabulous way to spend your spare time. I also play racketball. Do you have any hobbies?
Egon:
I collect spores, moulds and fungus.

Now OXM, Playstation: OM and Nintendo Power are done by the same company? That just feels so...promiscuous!

I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Then again, I don't read any of those magazines, so...

I'm wondering if people will get it for the low price (only 59.95 per issue) or will they get it for the "vast" content the PS3 has. Specially the huge library of games and exclusives.

Sounds cool. Hopefully they get some exclusive demos because I lost interest in OXM once all the demos started appearing on Live.

All three "official' magazines (360, PS and Nintendo) under one publisher does seem weird.

Damnit, I really didn't want Rob Smith to head this one. He's not that great an editor and when he came aboard on PSM, he really f'ed things up. The layout is wonky and the content is lacking.
Made me happy that I only payed $5 for my subscription.

If this means the death of PSM, I will feel very sad. I have had a subscription to that magazine for 5 years. Its a pretty good magazine. I hope if that is the case, the staff from PSM simply moves to working for the new mag.

Of course 13 issues means twelve monthly issues and a special holiday issue. Holiday issues are always awesome.
I hope they come with umd demo's for the psp, that would be nice. As for ps3 demo's I doubt it. Part of the reason for the old mag's demise was that sony wanted to move away from demo disks going into the ps3 generation, and demo disks were the primary draw for the OPM subscribers. Now for the PSP, umd demos would be awesome.
