SCEA announces "PlayStation: The Official Magazine"
Miss the Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM), Ziff Davis' all-things-PlayStation 'zine that was unceremoniously axed last November just before the launch of the PlayStation 3? Well, Sony has announced that Future US – publisher of other fine magazine products like Official Xbox Magazine, PC Gamer, and ... uh, Pregnancy – has signed up to publish the newly announced PlayStation: The Official Magazine scheduled to hit newsstands in November, and run 13 issues a year (that's once a month using Sony's proprietary calendar technology).
Of course, Future has also published the Official Sony PlayStation Magazine in the UK since 1995, and PSM (the independent PlayStation Magazine) in the US, so the whole Sony magazine thing is old hat for the folks at Future, we're sure. Speaking of PSM, editorial duties for the new mag will be handled by Rob Smith, former editor-in-chief of PSM, leading us to assume that the publisher won't be maintaining two PlayStation magazines, one "official" and one "independent." It's too bad, we'd take the acronym PSM over POM any day.

each issue will cost 59.99. (sorry had to beat fernando to the trolling!)
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Oct 1st 2007 1:02PM
The magazines will make a good fire in the PS Grill.
T3H WICKERMAN @ Oct 1st 2007 1:07PM
oh forgot to say that "each issue will contain 5 pages of content focusing on metal gear, and the the remaining pages will be blank except for 1 line reading:metal gear 4 comming soon!" that is all.
Night Elve @ Oct 1st 2007 2:16PM
@ Fernando.
You realize that your daily trolling activities are so childish.
For a married person you are so immature, please grown up.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 1st 2007 3:05PM
The only thing more annoying than Fernando's trolling are the people who troll every single comment Fernando makes pointing out that he's trolling.
T3H WICKERMAN @ Oct 1st 2007 5:57PM
@ Elf from the guy who said the other day " U R MR GAY" ?
archie91s @ Oct 1st 2007 7:30PM
Fernando is married? He looks like he's 17 in that picture, and he seems to spend all day on this site because he's always one of the first to comment!
NATO_Duke @ Oct 1st 2007 12:56PM
Weird. They transfer everyone's subscription to another mag when they shut it down - to now start another mag. I feel like we got screwed a bit.
Grog @ Oct 1st 2007 12:57PM
What do you think they'll name their 13th month? Cellember, Sonyuary, Playstationust are all good ideas, in my opinion.
GRANTED @ Oct 1st 2007 1:01PM
months are last gen. this comes out once a year.
jimy @ Oct 1st 2007 1:31PM
lousy smarch weather.
[.sm0ke.] @ Oct 1st 2007 2:18PM
Most, if not all, magazines published by Future run 13 issues a year. I know Official Xbox Magazine does, and I'm fairly certain Maximum PC does as well.
Mr Khan @ Oct 1st 2007 5:44PM
I guess that means new Non-Nintendo Nintendo Power will run 13 issues too
Spitkicker @ Oct 1st 2007 12:58PM
Sweet..now they can really get into detail on the *AMAZING* PS3. Maybe this will sell a couple of them.
Sam @ Oct 1st 2007 1:03PM

Got in before the fanboys!!!

"print is dead"
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 1st 2007 3:09PM
Janine:
I bet you like to read a lot, too.
Egon:
Print is dead.
Janine:
Oh, that's very interesting to me, I read a lot myself. Some people think I'm too intellectual but I think it's a fabulous way to spend your spare time. I also play racketball. Do you have any hobbies?
Egon:
I collect spores, moulds and fungus.
BPM (FDF - Hypno-Toad) @ Oct 1st 2007 1:23PM
Shake your POM POM.
sonofnone @ Oct 1st 2007 1:25PM
Pregnancy? I love Pregnancy! Wow. There's just no way that could ever sound right...from anyone.
llamapalooza87 @ Oct 1st 2007 1:30PM
Now OXM, Playstation: OM and Nintendo Power are done by the same company? That just feels so...promiscuous!
Chaotic (FDF - Fry) @ Oct 1st 2007 2:01PM
I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Then again, I don't read any of those magazines, so...
AoiX @ Oct 1st 2007 1:31PM
I'm wondering if people will get it for the low price (only 59.95 per issue) or will they get it for the "vast" content the PS3 has. Specially the huge library of games and exclusives.
T3H WICKERMAN @ Oct 1st 2007 2:16PM
Dont worry I hear there is a price drop and a new sku comming before the holidays.
Matt Smylie @ Oct 1st 2007 2:16PM
I like OPM a lot better than P:OM
Mr. P @ Oct 1st 2007 3:06PM
Sounds cool. Hopefully they get some exclusive demos because I lost interest in OXM once all the demos started appearing on Live.
RangerPrimeX @ Oct 1st 2007 3:31PM
All three "official' magazines (360, PS and Nintendo) under one publisher does seem weird.
TeamAwesome @ Oct 1st 2007 4:53PM
"...Sony's proprietary calendar technology...."
Mr. Grant, I salute your wit. Love that phrase.
B1gC72 @ Oct 1st 2007 8:46PM
i literally fell out of my chair with laughter after reading that. i then had to go change my pants.
Nate @ Oct 1st 2007 4:27PM
my OPM is baaaaaack!!!
Silver R. Wolfe @ Oct 1st 2007 5:35PM
Damnit, I really didn't want Rob Smith to head this one. He's not that great an editor and when he came aboard on PSM, he really f'ed things up. The layout is wonky and the content is lacking.
Made me happy that I only payed $5 for my subscription.
grapenutsrobot @ Oct 1st 2007 10:19PM
The layout changed BEFORE Rob came aboard.
NintendoFanbot @ Oct 1st 2007 6:24PM
EWWWWWWWWWW
Future US is also doing Nintendo Power now. :(
Brandon @ Oct 1st 2007 6:59PM
If this means the death of PSM, I will feel very sad. I have had a subscription to that magazine for 5 years. Its a pretty good magazine. I hope if that is the case, the staff from PSM simply moves to working for the new mag.
Brandon @ Oct 1st 2007 7:05PM
Of course 13 issues means twelve monthly issues and a special holiday issue. Holiday issues are always awesome.
I hope they come with umd demo's for the psp, that would be nice. As for ps3 demo's I doubt it. Part of the reason for the old mag's demise was that sony wanted to move away from demo disks going into the ps3 generation, and demo disks were the primary draw for the OPM subscribers. Now for the PSP, umd demos would be awesome.
maxamillion92 @ Oct 1st 2007 7:19PM
Does anyone know if this magazine is going to run in True DPI or will if be the old 360 DPI of other mags? Will I have to upgrade my eyes to read it?
And someone find Mike Salmon and make him in charge! Ahhh... PCXL I miss ya...
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 1st 2007 8:43PM
Finally a source that knows How to rate Sony games, lol.
Powerlord @ Oct 1st 2007 10:21PM
Isn't Future US also the same company that is taking over Nintendo Power?
Which means that they produce all 3 "official" magazines?
ThornedVenom @ Oct 2nd 2007 2:58AM
News-worthy: is it?
Name stealing: Legendary: The Box similarity?
Titles: new Yoda-speak?
Jaycee11 @ Oct 24th 2007 6:54AM
