Wouldn't you have loved to have been there on Super Smash Bros. Brawl audition day?
"Hi, my name is Lucas, but you may know me from Mother 3."
"So, no one in America has any clue who you are, right?"
"Umm, yes. That is technically correct. Yeah."
"Do you have any special powers?"
"Well, I look kind of like Dennis the Menace."
"You're hired!"
For our part, we're forever going to pretend that newly announced brawler Lucas from Super Smash Bros. Brawl is actually Power Glove and radical haircut sporter, Lucas Barton from The Wizard. In the biz, that's known as an upgrade.

If Brawl is going to have a (technically) Japan-only character, why can't Brawl have US/Europe-only character like Mike Jones from StarTropics as well?
This is an injustice!!

This isn't a first. One of the most popular characters from Melee was Marth, a Japanese Fire Emblem character who actually helped make the series popular in the US.
Perhaps they're hoping to increase Earthbound notoriety for a sequel. :)

Total second for adding StarTropics' Mike. If they could do a Pit-style redesign on him it would be even more awesome. StarTropics was possibly my favorite NES game after Mario 3.

This better mean two things:
1) We're getting Mother 3.
2) Ness is still in Brawl with the "Is it possible he can surpass even Ness?!" statement.

Exactly! This better mean that:
1.) Ness is still in the game.
2.) We are eventually getting Mother 3 in some form.
If neither of those end up being true, there will be a lot of furious Nintendo fans out there.

someone please explain to me why this is such a hyped title? Is it just becuase you can fight with these various characters? Is the combat actually compelling compared to other 3d fighting games? I just don't get it..

Again I say, what's so compelling about it? I can understand people being excited about it if it's a deep, complex 3d fighter that happens to use all these old characters. If it's a fluff fighter for people who worship these old characters then I'll file it under garbage and not waste my time. Nintendo has a habit of making what I consider to be fluff games that milk these old characters. So which is this? complex 3d fighter or fluff game for fans of the characters?

[S]SB[B] is no VF or SF, but what is?
SSBB is no more fluff than any of the FPSes or console RPGs we've seen in the last decade; it's likely substantially deeper than any of *those*.

First of all, it is NOT a 3d Fighter. It is a 2D fighter. But, it has all of the depth, perhaps even more, than many 3D fighters out there (especially since it seems to me that the majority of 3d fighters are fighting not in 3d but rotating 2d planes)
If you have a wii/gamecube, I recomend renting Smash Bros. Melee from Blockbuster to see if this series is your cup of tea. It IS the greatest selling gamecube game, so I think that there might be more than nostalgia to its popularity.

I know you're trolling, but I'll replay anyway.
Smash Bros. is not a 3D fighter at all. It's actually a 2D fighter with pseudo-3D animation. I hesitate to even call it a fighter, since it bears little resemblance to even 2D titles like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat that have your standard back and forth movement. Instead, stages are complex and interactive, items expand on characters' individual abilities, and (most different of all) you don't win by dealing a certain amount of damage, but by knocking your opponent off the screen. This allows for a great deal of strategy, since there are different ways to play defensively if you've taken high damage (which makes it easier to get knocked off) as well as different offensive strategies to eliminate opponents quickly without needing to deal a lot of damage in addition to standard "just beat 'em up" strategies.
Most of all, it's a fun game for 2-3-4 people, and "Brawl" is a very appropriate word for how chaotic it is - which does not at all take away from the skill required.

My two cents on it... the game is a fresh break from most other fighters - the object isn't to "kill" your opponent but knock them off the stage - this leads to characters flying all over the place at some point - can lead to sudden death fights where the slightest hit will make someone fly. Utter chaos.
Couple that with the ridiculous items you can get/use and you have a pretty involved fighter. There's basic special moves and pretty good balance between characters.
Get four people in a room playing it and have a few beers and you can easily play it for hours. It's a good time. I highly recommend it.

Special powers? What do you mean, looks like Dennis the Menace? He learned all his special powers from psychic transvestites.
Well, That's one way to look at the Magypsies, anyhow.
I'm hoping to see Ness, too. And that one of Lucas' alternate outfits is Klaus.

Dude, did you ever play the disaster that was StarTropics 2? After that, I'm quite content to never see another StarTropics again. That was apparently a lightning-in-a-bottle game.

Having Mother 3 finally come over seas would be nice... Still, since I don't really know the character I would much rather have had Jeff or Paula or Poo announced. (sadface)

In Super Smash Bros Melee, they wanted to get rid of Ness and add Lucas. But since Mother 3 was delayed- they decided to just put Ness back. After Mother 3 came out 2 years ago, they decided to go with Lucas again. But after the statement, MAYBE Ness will join Lucas too....?

Well, he's not really "in" the game. It's a misconception. Mother3's story is much further in the future. Ness is there really as a small cameo. He's not playable and doesn't even interact with the characters.

Oh, man, I hope Mother 3 comes out over here. Earthbound is pretty much my favourite game ever, and I would be a sad panda if Ness was cut (even though this Lucas dude looks pretty much like a blond Ness, even an alternate costume).
C'mon, Earthbound is a cult classic everywhere, Mother 3 is possibly great in Japan only. Gotta keep Ness.

WTF where is earth bound 3? Nintendo is run by idiots who are to set in their old ways. Why not release the gba collection with 1 and 2, and then give us 3? It has enough of a following and the magazines would blow its c&*k on nostaligia factor. Couldnt they at least spruce it up for the ds? No earthbound no wii. That is the rule nintendo.

"So... you're the one who touched her breast, huh?"
As far as Lucas is concerned, I'll need to see if his move list matches up before we cry out that Ness is gone. Afterall, if Lucas plays differently, then why not bring Ness back?
Of course, if he plays totally the same, then just give me an alternate costume with a hat and we'll be good.

No. It isn't.
I need to play Melee again.
I think Ness will be in again for two reasons.
1) On the Brawl site before it was redesigned Sakurai stated that the original 12 characters would most likely return to Brawl.
2) He is refered to in the site Update.
