Maybe you're the type of person who's still a slave to physical media. Maybe you have a crush on the girl at your local GameStop, maybe you're trying to make your shelf of PS3 games more respectable. Whatever your excuse, Sony has you covered, confirming that they'll be releasing a $39.99 retail version of Warkhawk that doesn't include Bluetooth headset this month.
As you may remember, the game is currently just available in a $60 retail package with a headset or in a $40 downloadable form. Though the GameStop listing that originally started this story puts the game at an Oct. 10 release date, Sony has not confirmed that part of the story. We're not going to try to understand the logic behind this SKU, though we wouldn't be surprised if it's (in part) a bit of retailer placation. That's right game store, you're not threatened at all by full, downloadable games that don't even require people to get off their couches. Just go back to sleep, pumpkin.

I'll never buy a downloadable version of a game when there's an option for a physical version. No new game smell. I like to stick my nose deep in that booklet whilst fapping.

I agree.
When you buy the retail version, you can always sell it down the road. Can't do that with the online version.
I just bought this game, from Gamefly....it was dirt cheap with headset. This game kicks major ass. What a fun game. If you like multiplayer action, this is for you. Some of those guys on the ranked servers are BRUTAL.

Physical media is more reliable than hard drives.
If you can back up downloaded stuff, why not.

Agreed. This game is amazingly fun. The graphics are killer. Some of the best dog fighting(planes not pitbulls) action I've ever played.

True. Over a third of 360 owners don't even have a Silver account, and the 360 is considered an online-oriented system. And I'm sure the portion of PS3s online is fewer than the 360.

Simple - when I'm done with the game, I can sell it on eBay for almost as much as I bought it for. Can't do that with downloaded anything...

meh i got the bluetooth bundle.
the online ranking system in this game is still whack. i have like 3,000 points, but i am a "2nd lieutenant" class (which requires 35,000 and some other stuff). doesn't make sense, but i'm not complaining. besides, the gameplay is fast, hectic, and epic. best online battles since 4v4 BGH on the old skool computer.

I bought the download version and am totally happy. I know I'm not ever going to sell it, so "sell it on eBay" is a moot argument for me. I'm glad I can just sit down on my couch, turn on the PSP from the controller and dive right in, no disc, no muss, no fuss.
That said, I would have like some downloadable instructions or something because getting my BT headset to work was a bitch (you have to enable it under Audio Settings in the XMB after pairing it).
I felt like a sucker after getting the PS3 until this came out (though I got it after the price drop, so it wasn't that long). Seriously, if you own a PS3, get this game!

Notice that Joystiq doesn't post the main picture showing an action ground combat level? It's because it would put Halo 3 to shame and perhaps Microsoft might just have some influence over the types of articles written and pictures posted of Sony's flagship titles.
Gotta be real!

Funny how nobody mentioned Halo, and then you came along. I'm starting to think you have a infatuation with Halo 3.
Either buy a 360 and play it, or stop talking about it.
You are just making yourself look bad.

@Jesse - Probably because the game is called "Warhawk"...which you know...is an air combat vehicle.

Great game, great fun but the online system is so scruffy and PC-like in the face of CoD4 and Halo 3. I bought the download when it came out and I got bored fairly quickly. I doubt I'll ever touch it again due to depth and community offered by Halo3 (and CoD4 in november)

"...a $39.99 retail version of Warkhawk..."
"Wark"hawk? Is this a tie-in with Final Fantasy? Flying through the skies on a chocobo, shooting Firagas at airships and ground troops?
...
That actually sounds hella awesome.

I bought the disc/headset combo, as I didn't have a headset beyond my old SOCOM usb headset (still the most useful headset I own), and I wanted to have a wireless one.
My take on this is that I almost wish I had bought the downloadable version, as it would always be on the harddrive, and I wouldn't have to keep the Warhawk disk in the drive. Not that I really mind; the game is great and it's all I'm playing on the PS3 right now.

What are those big ships in the picture? Those look like WarAlbatrosses or something. They'd be sweet to pilot in game.
Come to think of it, is that picture even related to WarHawk, let alone not being in-game?

I think it's concept art from when Warhawk was originally going to have a single player campaign. At some point along the way Incognito decided they weren't happy with the way the SP was coming along, but they were very pleased with MP... so they scrapped the SP.

"Maybe you have a crush on the girl at your local GameStop"
By "girl" they mean that fat douchebag trying to convince you to buy a game without a case or instruction booklet for five dollars less than a factory-sealed game.

The girl at my GameStop smells awful and is so stupid and lazy that it takes me almost a half hour to buy anything. Seriously do they just hire any chick who applys so that they can have a girl in the store?

I forgot which movie said it:
"Pussy is pussy".
And come on, it's not like you needed a PhD to work there.

Are they adding another version of this game packaged without the headset or completely replacing the headset version?
I want Warhawk, but not at this moment (TF2 coming out) and would like to get it with a headset since I currently down have one.

Once again Sony early adopters got screwed.....great sony. Fortunately I got my WARHAWK for 1/2 price.
Suffice to say....WARHAWK = Battlefield Lite (or better BATTLEFIELD for Dummies).
I was severely disappointed by this game to say the least. It is not a true sequel to the WARHAWK for PS1 that I loved so.
Not to mention it could have the WORST matchmaking system in history.....and its very rare that people actually act as a team and tend to just run around and do there own thing.
If you want a more entertaining game....I suggest picking up BATTLEFIELD: MODERN COMBAT for XBOX, PS2 or BATTLEFIELD 2 or BATTLEFIELD 2142 for PC. You'll not only save money...you'll be playing a better game for much longer than the experience that is WARHAWK on PS3.
