Yes, but they are licensed parts. Most chip companies are fabless, so Nintendo can choose their manufacturers.

Besides, the die sizes are so small, they get much more yield per run. I wouldn't call them jelly bean parts, but they can be cranked out very easily by anyone these days. You don't need a specialty manufacturer to make a mildly clocked 90nm part. Everyone can do that.

I have seen one Wii in a SuperTarget this last year. Am happy I got mine on launch day. If I do find one, I'm going to sell it on eBay during the holiday season.

Top games: Zelda: TP, MP3, and the ability to play all my GameCube games (Ikaragu FTW!!--even though I'll probably buy the 360 XBLA version when it comes out for online coop).

Hey Tards. Post where you live when you say the Wii's are in stock or aren't. It does nobody any good when you say they are plentiful by you and then don't actually say where you live. Same goes for posters who say they are sold out by them.

"Hmmm -- it uses totally standard components, none of which are cutting edge or which should have any production difficulties. "

Agreed. These are as close to "off the shelf" components as you can get. Any shortage is due to A) partnering with foundries that don't know what the H*ll they are doing and can't scale or B) Nintendo holding back stock.

Or C)You have no idea what goes into making a Wii or the business climate Nintendo is operating under. Therefore, any opinion of you or any other fanboy on this web site is null and void.

I love the people who purchased the Wii and then sold it off a few short months later. Know what that tells me? Not that the Wii is lacking in the software department, but rather that these consumers have pie-in-the-sky expectations and lack the simple ability to do research on a product before they spend upwards of $250, $300, etc. I hear this, "OH! I bought into the hype and now I am disappointed!" Well, shame on you for buying into the hype! Congratulations! You're the reason companies can continue to make sales based on hype! You want to prove that you are a free-thinking individual? Wait a while before jumping on the bandwagon! That way, you'll have a better understanding of what to expect in the coming months.

I have no sympathy for early adopters who become disappointed with their purchase. You bought something based on pure expectations. Same goes for iPhone, PS3, etc. early adopters. But at least your mistakes weren't in vain! Your buying (or non-buying) history will help dictate further developments of the product so that those who were smart enough to make informed purchasing decisions will have a solid future! Meanwhile, those "hype chasers" will find the next new thing to cry about when it fails to meet their expectations.

I still haven't bought into the hype of this whole "New Coke" thing. I'm waiting a couple more decades before I try it out. I just can't tell if it's worth the price of entry yet. Until then I'll just stick with my old trusty Orange Moxie.

And before anyone starts wondering, I purchased the Wii on day one, and yes, I was excited to have a new toy. I understood the hype surrounding it and tried my best to distance myself from it. Is the release of high-quality titles for the Wii extremely slow? You bet it is, but I knew this would happen before I made my initial purchase. The DS didn't pick up until a year into its life. I purchase one after Mario Kart hit. The 360 has been plagued with technical issues for nearly two years. Now that more reliable machines are in the wild, I'm doing what I can to score myself one. Instead of waiting with the Wii, though, I purchased it ahead of time because the kind of exposure it was garnering guaranteed that it would be relatively difficult to find in stores for quite some time. Sure, its starting to get a little bit easier to find Wiis, but I am satisfied because I have one and I don't have to fight soccer moms to get one now. I know the games I want to play are coming. In the meantime, I have my DS and PS2 to keep me company.

But yeah, you disgruntled early adopters are something else.

Anyone seen Blood Diamond as of late? Good movie.
It explains how screwed up jewelry companies kept a secret stash of diamonds locked up to keep the supply low and the demand high. Sound familiar?

Hah. I don't blame Nintendo though. Its about time they started making the big bucks again. Think of it as the band-aid that healed the Cube era.

And uh. I'm sure Nintendo didn't fuel wars in Africa... I hope.

I don't regret buying a Wii despite the lack of tons of nice games. I bought the Wii because the games on it will never come to PC.

360 has great shooters, action, and racing games. So does PC.

PS3 has great science-helping screen savers, and 3d chat rooms, so does PC.

Wii has several major IPs and motion controls that PC won't have ever/for years. So I bought a Wii. And I don't regret it. Whereas if I had a 360 I would be crying that I spent so much to play games that would be out on PC eventually anyway, with better graphics.

I may be in the minority here, but i actually like the fact that there are only a few triple A games for the wii. It's nice that i dont feel the need to buy a new game or two every week and wont feel like im missing out. And im sure ssbb will keep me entertained for a good year when i finally get it.

Sweet Jesus, I must have really been out of the loop for some time. I get off for one week and all of the -other- fanboys come out of the woodwork.

115+ comments on a PR statement from Reggie? Sheesh, you guys are certainly something else.
---
Anyway, more in line with the comment I'm hanging on to...

I stay at a dorm for college and leave my Wii at home. Therefore, I am not too affected by the dearth of high profile games as I only get to play on it every two days out of the week, if that. In fact, I'm still playing Metroid Prime 3.

That said, I only buy a game a month regardless, whether it be for my Wii, DS or PC. So yeah, I'm not too worried about the line up.

Theory: gamers tend to live in the same community, so places with gamer communities will tend to have products sold out.

Test: Check availability of other consoles/games. Is the PS3/XBox of proportionally similar amounts to the Wii at the different locations?

I think Reggie's statement may have truth to them.

I think that it is impossible to satiate the demand of American consumers for any item, especially if that item is a must gift for the holidays. From my experiences in shopping after Thanksgiving, we Americans will buy anything.
