Cop killings are on the rise in the US and Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a law enforcement trainer and author of On Combat and On Violence, blames video games. Some quick stats before we go into Grossman's statements. There have been 54 officer killings this year, a 60% increase from last year and the worst since 1975 when there were 99. Too bad they couldn't blame video games back then. Or could they have?
There's some more reasonable assessment of why there's a cop killing increase in the Time article, but the most controversial is certainly Grossman's comments. He believes criminals have become desensitized to opening fire on a police officer due to the "cop-killer, criminal simulators." He says that in meth labs and gang houses they'll always find video games. He says, "The video games are their newspaper, their television, their all-consuming narrative. And their video games are all cop-killer, criminal simulators." But wouldn't criminals be more inclined to play games like that in the first place? Anyway, like we pointed out before, rates were still higher in 1975. Then again, 1975 was apparently the first year Pong was introduced to homes.

Dear Lt. Col. Dave Grossman,
You are ruining our country by using scapegoats for every social issue. How about you go do your job and prevent these things from happening, like the government pays you to. mmmkay pumpkin?

In our society, you grow up to fear and hate cops. 30 years ago, you grew up to admire and respect them. End of story.
Cop is the new black in our culture of hate.

It wouldn't be that way if your average cop wasn't a guy who couldn't get into college and became a cop because they like to lord over people with their authority.
I've never had an encounter with police that didn't give me this impression.

I blame the readily available guns and the lousy parents. Honestly look into these poor communities and see how the parents are not involved. Im sick of politicians being pussies about it. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS AND TO AN EXTENT THE COMMUNITY THE "CRIMINAL" GROWS UP IN. Im sick of this blame game. These people are either afraid or too ignorant to call their constituites to task.

Hey Raptor...politicians already have a hobby. I believe it's called cheating on their wives and banging hookers.
But yeah...this blaming video games for society's problems shit is getting very old, very fast. I play Forza 2...do you see me getting my hands on a Ferrari F430 and doing 150 mph on the expressway? No. I play Rainbow Six Vegas...do you see me rappelling down skyscrapers and popping dudes that don't even know I'm there? No. Yesterday, I picked up NHL 08...and do you see me pounding guys into the boards and picking goalies apart with sick moves?
...
*sigh* ...well, you can't do EVERYTHING, right?

hmm...or maybe it's the increase of videos showing needless police brutality--most recent case in point, the tasered kid at the political convention (even though IMO he was incredibly stupid and arrogant and he deserved what he got--you really should respect authority).
I blame the increase in people's lack of common sense and power of pure stupidity and self-righteousness. and more so to the music industry--there's quite a lot of rap music recently out that puts an emphasis on cops, n*****s, etc....talk about doing your own race a disservice. but I digress.
People playing videogames are too busy playing videogames to waste their time IRL with police confrontations.

@ Shag-
Did you read my post....
I said nothing of censorship or whether the article was write or wrong...I am merely pointing out that there are some people, kids out there that can't make the distinction...thus it is possible that some violent games can influence people or kids .... and to think that it is not possible to me is irresponsible....

Well I'm sure this 'expert' has carefully taken other ALL OTHER SOCIAL FACTORS into account too then? Like economic conditions and whatnot? And I'm also sure he was careful to correlate that the people who are playing games the most are those who have displayed this rise in a tendency to shoot cops, which should be quite evident if his statement is true.
Yeah, it's gotten to the point where anytime I hear "OMFG YOU MAY BE AT RISK!" on the news, I watch carefully and can usually see where some public dept. is wanting more funding, or somebody is just flat out trying to sell something to me.

Oh sure, violent television and music can never be blamed anymore =/ Violent people are violent because they have always been violent, or a life change has made them violent. You have to look at the underlying causes, such as how they were raised, the stressors in their lives(I think working in a meth lab is a sure sign of desperation, wouldn't you think so?), etc. There are too many factors for video games to be the cause of cop killings or anything else that involves murder and violence.
Studies have shown that video games can cause an increase in violence in CHILDREN, but these people are ADULTS. Also, video games aren't the only thing. As mentioned before, there are different forms of media. What the media contains also influences the child. There have been several experiments with dummies etc, but I won't go into that. It's mainly monkey see, monkey do.
