People are accustomed to reading loads of text on a PC screen. Console gamers have grown up reading text, but not to the same degree that PC users have in terms of depth and length.

God forbid you have to read! Maybe it's a cultural thing, since Square Enix felt that voice overs were needed for the Western releases of Dragon Quest VIII while the Japanese version had no voice overs whatsoever.

If the quality of the script is good, I don't mind reading at all since my favorite RPGs are still the text-only ones. It's not like movies came out and books became a bound stack of shunned paper.

once again, The short stories are not the games plot..think of this as Final Fantasy X with books in the world ala Oblivion. Except they are memories not books.

My problem isn't the reading, it's the fact that this is a bit of a step backwards.

Videogames are in the process of turning themselves into a completely new storytelling medium. We're transitioning away from cutscenes, which are a transition away from static voiceovers, which are a transition away from text.

In order for videogames to define themselves as a unique artform, they need to stop hodgpodging together elements from other narrative media, like literature (textboxes) and film (cutscenes).

I think it's a cop-out. Games need to learn how to tell stories on their own, not fall back on old media. Look at Half-Life 2- no cutscenes, no textboxes, incredible storytelling.

While Lost Odyssey may turn out to be a great game, I think that this is a bad decision for games in general.

I'll take reading over the generally piss-poor voice overs nearly every game on the market gets.

Well my favorite RPG, FFVIII, was text based so I'm ok with that, but shouldn't next gen games have audio voice overs as well? I mean if FFX and FFXII had it, then I should assume an epic game would have it too. Maybe an option to turn on and off the audio voiceover would be best.

so it's like xenogears? Lots of reading on an rpg was no problem, what, 6 years ago? Sure it's not new gen and practically not current gen but just coz there's no voice overs doesn't mean those cut scenes are now bad.

Way I see it, who cares? If the game's good, it doesn't matter anyway whether or not they put in optional text. Just another way to give the option of taking the story beyond the gameplay.
Anyways, my favorite RPGs require reading, dice, and friends. Anything on the console is just killing time between sessions.
