Sorry Konny, you're just wrong. Its a whole market slowdown, with the anomaly of the PSPLite/FF7 bundle making it sell like crazy for 1 week.

Next week everything will be down.

And even if you're right, and the hype for wii has died in japan, guess what? The wii, with NO hype, is still outselling the PS3 in japan 2:1. What does that tell you about the PS3's prospects? Not good, thats what.

Wow, Konny (as to be expected) is the only flame so far? Where has the SDF gone?

I'm gettin' chilly - what does Joystiq have to do to bring back the flamin'? It used to be all they had to do was mention PS3 and Wii in the same headline to stoke the fires...

Well, things got pretty bad when Joystiq posted Reggie's PR statement on the Wii shortage for the holiday season, yesterday. How far did that thread go for? 120+ posts?

But yeah, pants would be a good start if you're cold. :)

Something Missing

I remember I put on my socks,
I remember I put on my shoes.
I remember I put on my tie
That was painted
In beautiful purples and blues.
I remember I put on my coat,
To look perfectly grand at the dance,
Yet I feel there is something
I may have forgot--
What is it? What is it? ...

Kinda pisses me off that since the 360 is from America that they don't like it as much. At the same time they try to be more "white and more western." =\

On topic: I think the Wii is doing well because of the price and the attraction appeal. Ps3 does have better games imo but the Japanese will lea towards it more. Same way they don't like the 360 because of whatever reason, same way the Wii fit's into their culture more thna the PS3 and 360. I mean the Japanese love those chibi anime/animal stuff. Just look at the Japanese culture, the Wii fits that mold. Even if the 360 has better games it comes down to what is more Japanese like to them.

That's the reason why I feel the Wii is doing well. Mainly because of their culture, hence why 360 is doing bad. It has more games than the PS3 yet is not doing as well as the PS3 in Japan. It's messed up to me.

At least us Americans use reason and use rational thinking for purchasing a system. Not just all of America going with the 360, we scope out our perferances.

So buying a Wii is unreasonable? And I thought that people in the US are buying Wiis because of hype... which is the opposite of reason.

Personally, I think REASON would dictate not buying a system that breaks down 30% of the time.

Face it, Americans buy video games out of passion, not reason.

Damn, that's a lot of overt racism there...

"since the 360 is from America that they don't like it as much. At the same time they try to be more "white and more western." =\"

First, it has nothing to do with it being from America. There just aren't any Japanese-style games on it except for Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata. The Japanese aren't big on shooters. The Wii and DS should tell you what's more popular there.

Second, White and Western? 'The Hell..?

"At least us Americans use reason and use rational thinking for purchasing a system. Not just all of America going with the 360, we scope out our perferances."

Yeah, those kooky Nazi sidin' Japs are SO irrational about their purchases, aren't they? We Americans are SO much smarter. I don't even know what to say to this!
Your logic fails, first of all, by the success of the PS2 in America and the crushing the GC and Xbox got. Where's the rationality there? The Gamecube, by the way, sold better in Japan than in America.
Did you ever think that- GASP!- the Japanese have simply different taste, from game style to even console aesthetics? That MAYBE the crap on the 360 just doesn't appeal to them? They don't WANT to play games where all you do is shoot shit?

Tons of American products are big in Japan. From McDonalds to the iPod. The 360's failure to sell to the Japanese market has NOTHING to do with it being an American console and EVERYTHING to do with the predominantly western (white?)-style "hardcore" library.

Of course the Xbox 360 isn't popular in Japan.

The Japanese don't generally go for technology that has the life-span of a horse fly. I still read on some messageboards, in absolute amazement, astonishment and disgust, stuff like "I'm on my 5th xbox. The DVD drive is making a weird noise though, tee hee. Hopefully it lasts long enough for me to play Halo3 for 3 hours before I send it in for repair again" Wtf? And you say the JAPANESE are biased???

To add insult to injury, 95% of the best-rated Xbox games are first-person (halo, gow, oblivion, bioshock) and sports games. Those games are popular in japan about as much as some of the more "quirky" (i.e. rape simulation) japanese games are here.

If you want to sell hardware to the Japanese, hire Apple to design it. Microsoft has the same design people it seems as GM & Ford. How do you think those brands sell in Japan?

"So buying a Wii is unreasonable?"

-No but if you're buying it because it's more resembelance to your culture then that's not fair.

"And I thought that people in the US are buying Wiis because of hype... which is the opposite of reason."

-That and most people who support Nintendo would of bought it regardless. Others because of hype, some because of low price. Not because it is more like their culture.

"Face it, Americans buy video games out of passion, not reason."

-WRONG! It depends. Americans didn't see a reason why one would buy a PS3, when their is a subsitute 360 that has better games, cheaper price etc. They are reasoning. Other's use reason to invest in the PS3 as a long haul purchase. Some is because of passion but not as nearly as much as reason. Decisions is the main backbone of what we do, when most of us make a decision we use reason, espically when there's competition involved.

Look:
Wii- Japan
PS3- Japan
360- USA

Wii appeals more to Japanese people becuase of yes price but to their culture since it's Japanese. Sony an established Japanese company has te PS3. So Japanese people will support it as well since it's japanese, but not nearly as well as the Wii because it's not cute enough. Reason Xbox didn't do so well. It was a black box to them and looked ugly. MS looked where they could improve and they did, good job MS. 360 was also designed to try and attract more Japanese gamers and they to get more RPG's in the mix. Since it's from America it don't do so well.

Equation for Japanese gamers:

J>A J+>J
Meaning Japanese will buy a Japanese product over an American one, even if 360 has better online than PS3 and more games, BUT when comparing to Japan based products, the Japanese product with the bonuses( looks, price, appeal) will be greater than a Japanese product.

@ Sam
"First, it has nothing to do with it being from America. There just aren't any Japanese-style games on it except for Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata. The Japanese aren't big on shooters. The Wii and DS should tell you what's more popular there."

See Japanese Style games. Note America is more diverse, Japan is not. So if they like RPG's then alot of them do. Us we like all types. Shotters may be big, but alot of us here do like rpg's as well as shooters and a mix of Japanese style games as well.

"Second, White and Western? 'The Hell..?"

This has nothing to do w/gaming but I look into differnt types of races and they some think the way they do and some asians try to be more like white people. It's true.

"Your logic fails, first of all, by the success of the PS2 in America and the crushing the GC and Xbox got. Where's the rationality there?"

You're only proving me right. my argument is that Japanese base their prefenerance more on their culture and don't like chance. PS2 success in America was great because of the vast library of games. More games= more VARIETY. Platform, rpg, fighting, etc. Not just the liking to rpg's, racing and fighting.

"The Gamecube, by the way, sold better in Japan than in America.
Did you ever think that- GASP!- the Japanese have simply different taste, from game style to even console aesthetics?"

That's the problem. Everyone has their own style, but in Japan there isn't alot of diversity, so alot of people will have the same taste. Here we have our own taste but we like anime( japan influences as well) and american music( guitar hero). We like all types, some more than others but not so large that we perdominately like shotters.

"Tons of American products are big in Japan. From McDonalds to the iPod. The 360's failure to sell to the Japanese market has NOTHING to do with it being an American console and EVERYTHING to do with the predominantly western (white?)-style "hardcore" library"

The reason i brought this up is because the Ps3 is selling better than the 360. Why? Ps3 doesn't have alot of rpgs out and most of the games that Japanese gamers want for the PS3 is not even out yet. And it's not to say 360 is not getting any rpg's, fighters or racing games. 360 does look beter and according to Japanese appeal, the PS3 is like the 360 in terms of size and attraction appeal. That's why MS changed the look of it. More slimer to appeal to the Japanese more, but it doesn't seem to work.

Correction: the PS3 is like the xbox in terms of size and attraction appeal.( black, big, etc)

My argument is simply this:

Is Japanese people like things that appeal to them, not because of where it came from, then why is the PS3 doing better in Japan? 360 looks slimer than the PS3 to it can attract more Japanese people, compared to the xbox. Cheaper, working on rpgs, and their style. So what is the PS3's success from? If it looks bigger and less attractive according to Japanese people and doesn't have that much rpg's as of yet, then what can it be?

@Justice

You conveniently left out the fact that the PS3 and the Wii don't feature a critical design flaw the way the 360 does. It's about quality over anything else. Why pay over $400 for a system that will only cause you trouble? The Japanese have forsaken the American console out of pure common sense.

2 games? Batallion Wars 2 isn't out I thought. Anyways it is comparable to Warhawk. (And that's speaking as if there was HIGH favor of BW2)
SSBB isn't out either...if you are speaking in terms of upcoming games PS3 > Wii no doubt.

Good games for Wii:
Zelda
Metroid
Resident Evil 4 (rehashed)

Comparable games on PS3 (and only 3 out of many):
Resistance
Warhawk
Oblivion (multiplat but not for Wii)

I don't see any argument here.

I've got a Wii and a PS3 and to be honest, the games that I find the most fun are Smooth Moves and Rabbids. Everything else seems to be something that was put together at the last minute by developers like EA to make a quick buck.

Most of my friends are wondering where the hell the Wii is headed since the game quality is not there for the hardcore gaming crowd. We figure that Nintendo is tapping into that mainstream consumer that we don't acknowledge on this site and thus the games will play to the lowest common denominator.

We are anxiously awaiting smash brothers though. Hope the games pick up on the Wii soon.
