Capcom (finally) casts loving gaze at PS3
While Capcom's love affair with the PlayStation 3 has had all the warmth of a vacation to E.D.N III, the upcoming year will see the company begin to move away from PS2 development in favor of creating games for Sony's latest console. The announcement, made by Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto, is sure to usher a sigh of relief from PS3 owners, who in lieu of Dead Rising and Lost Planet have been forced to roam shopping malls and suck on ice cubes as they pine for better days.
Tsujimoto also remarked that Capcom will also begin to embrace projects that can be developed for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in order to 'maximize profits,' rather than look to platform exclusives, marking the second such time we've heard Capcom officials make this stand. We've already seen Devil May Cry 4, once believed to be Sony's alone, become monogamously challenged, with Capcom set to release the forthcoming title on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 in simultaneous fashion early next year and Resident Evil 5 likewise coming to both consoles someday.
Interestingly, no mention of the Wii was made in the company's cross platform plans, though it seems likely that the console's nature will continue to spark more unique efforts like the dismally boring Umbrella Chronicles and the smart adventure/puzzler Zack & Wiki. One thing's for certain -- the coming year is going to be very interesting for Capcom.

ReverendGadgetBoy @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:33PM
FAIL.
you totally just substituted xbox 360 for playstation store and reposted your comment from the last news item.
i declare thee:
troll sauce.
on another note, this is most certainly a good thing. i dont have to be afraid of missing anything from capcom anymore.
YourSlay3r @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:35PM
Oh I forgot, Dead Rising and Lost Planet 2 on PS3 confirmed! Great success, great success!

Fernando, your rebuttal?
Patrick @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:30PM
So long as Sony can get the PS3 console down to $399 as predicted I think its safe to say its starting to come around for Sony.. This is going to be a killer christmas/Q1 08 period for PS3.
YourSlay3r @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:33PM
Maybe, but the same can be said with 360. We all know Halo 3 will still have hype at Christmas. And Mass Effect, more Disney movies on XBLM, oh and don't forget Microsoft really stole the show at E3 with the Scene it game. I know all the casual gamers are turned on by the new big button controller.
Xbox 360 + Scene it and big button controller + casual gamers= great success, great success!
Ska Oreo @ Oct 4th 2007 10:03AM
Dude I would so play Scene it. God I love that game.
Mr. P @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:30PM
I kinda stopped caring about Capcom after they got rid of Clover and started talking about nothing but money.
Patrick @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:36PM
Like nintendo? >_
YourSlay3r @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:39PM
Nintendo do not want money. The give out FREE wiimote jackets!
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 3rd 2007 11:38PM
Nintendo did not kill Clover.
Capcom killed Clover.
R.I.P. Clover.
FOXHOUND @ Oct 4th 2007 7:19AM
Clover = will be missed. :\

Finally, some Capcom on the PS3. Though they haven't exactly named names yet (I'm assuming Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5 don't count since we already knew about those). Maybe they'll finally announce Dead Rising 2. Please Capcom. Please.

Its funny to me how a japanese video game company like Capcom seems to support the 360 much more over the PS3.
phattie @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:33PM
Maybe because the 360 was out a year before?
Mr. P @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:34PM
MS has big pockets, that's all.
BPM (FDF - Hypno-Toad) @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:33PM
Wii is also getting the same Harvey Birdman game PS2 and PSP are. Being written, animated, and voiced by the same staff as the show, I'm sure there's no way High Voltage can screw it up.
phattie @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:35PM
Oh noes.. now they only have PSP games to port to the Wii.
Count Noobula @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:36PM
I think this is the stance that all third party company's should be taking, no exclusives. Exclusives should be done by Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft only. Consoles are expensive, at least capcom can let me enjoy ALL of their games on one machine, rather than having to buy all of them. Good for them and us the consumer.
Alright Konami, Namco, Squarenix, Bioware, 2K, Tecmo, and Epic, here is your que.
Psaakyrn @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:44PM
Unfortunately, considering the vastly differing hardware specs of all consoles, that isn't possible. The Wii: lower processing power, better motion sensitivity. The 360: 2 core, no motion controls, better internet service. The PS3: 8 core, motion sensitivity.
But is there any word of Exclusives for PS3? For all we know, this may just mean that they're developing multiplayform games for 360 and PS3, while 360 and Wii get all the exclusives..
Strike Man @ Oct 3rd 2007 10:54PM
I agree about 100% here.
Psaakyrn, I'm sure the biggest reason why Lost Planet and Dead Rising were exclusive to XBOX wasn't because they had a secret love afair with Microsoft. The only other console game system of comparable power (more or less, depending on which fanboy argument you look at) wasn't out yet at that point in time.
Big budget games are becoming way too expensive these days, so unless you have a particular interest in keeping a game exclusive (ie Microsoft publishing Ninja Gaiden 2), you'd have to be crazy not to aim for a multiplatform strategy.
If and when there are sequels to those two Capcom games, I would expect them to be on both the 360 and PS3. From Capcom's POV, there is zero reason to ignore either system.

I could have sworn that the 360 was a triple core system?

Questworld @ Oct 3rd 2007 11:01PM
How is it that people feel that the PS3 is actually losing out on Capcom "love" when they probably have better games (and potentially previously 360 only releases) coming out for them than the Wii has?
kingrottenboy @ Oct 4th 2007 2:10AM
well the point is this, Sony is saying how the ps3 is much more advanced than the 350, which in the long run probally is, but will it matter if 3rd party development uses the 360 as the lowest common denominator, sure in 4 years or so the ps3 games will run at 10 frames faster and have a shinier light effect but that will be all the difference.
no exclusives mean underpowered ps3 games and extra heat producing 360 consoles
gir @ Oct 3rd 2007 11:35PM
I really don't like what the wii is getting from Capcom. Why are we getting garbage games. Umbrella Chronicles is cool, but its not RE5......and Zack & Wiki.....what the hell is that crap.
I think I'm gonna go cry.
Anni @ Oct 3rd 2007 11:48PM
Since, as you pointed out, Nintendo wasn't mentioned by Capcom here, I'm not sure why we're obliged to bring them up.
If you put them in every article, people will start to think Joystiq is a casual gaming site. Oh noes. :(
thecouncil @ Oct 4th 2007 12:01AM
I love how the 'dismally boring' resident evil link is to an april 2007 article... the game has reportedly had severe improvements since then, guys. you must have a more recent article than that. what a joke.
Platy @ Oct 4th 2007 12:06AM
when the cube was crap .... capcom loved it and released lots of new stuff
now that the wii is awesome ... they go to the ps3 ?
i don't want to tell that the ps3 is a gamecube (again) ... i want a real resident evil, a new viewtiful joe and more cool and style games like the others ON WII =/
Jouten @ Oct 4th 2007 12:33AM
My two cents:
I have not been a big fan of Sony the past few years. Mainly because they try to push propriatory formats on us. However, since the PSP launch, they have re-designed it and also proved to many of us that although it won't be a format adopted by 'everyone', it still supports it's own format by it's continued use of UMD. For example, it's like the Game Cube's 'propriatory' format, it's used by Sony only, not adopted for use by everyone to use on different machines/technology. I never had a problem with Sony using UMD for it's PSP, I just didn't want other devices to become dependent on it as their media source.
Now with that blurb out of the way, I'm hoping for a lot of things, mainly for Sony to realize that Blu Ray can be used for its games on the PS3 and maybe even creating a UMD type media that uses Blu Ray technology (10Gig 'UMD's anyone?). Now that would be nice.
As it is, I think HD-DVD is fine for movies to the general public and then Blue Ray could be an exclusive media format for the Sony PS3 and possible future PSP devices. I could live with that. Then obvisoulsy (for now until new Xbox comes out) the PS3 would have single disc space advantage over current gen consoles. It needs to be able to do SOMETHING that other consoles can't do right now and that's definitely one.
Either way, I know I will be getting a PS3 eventually, just to be able to play Sony's exclusive titles. And I'm almost willing to bet that the PS3 will become the console of choice for (J)RPG genre software companies due to the PS3's media capacity and their software's 'not-so-technology-dependent' console hardware specs.
Like I said, my two cents...
Cuja @ Oct 4th 2007 1:21AM
Once the PS2 goes, then the decline begins for the Wii. Cross platform titles would be mostly PSP ports, along with first party DS ports. Handhelds will eventually take over the casual gamers, while the 360 and PS3 fight over the hardcore gamers.
tactics @ Oct 4th 2007 1:36AM
need to maximize profits? pledge development for the PS3!
what a fucking joke.
-"superfan" tactics.
Anticrawl @ Oct 4th 2007 2:55AM
Indeed, I'm not sure what they're thinking. Everyone onws a Wii. If I wanted and loved money that's where I'd go. The DS already prints money as it is and the Wii is doing it now. Eh well, I'll keep playing my 360 until someone steps up to the plate for the Wii, or until Galaxy/Smash Bros. comes out.
License to ill @ Oct 4th 2007 10:06AM
Interestingly, no mention of the Wii was made in the company's cross platform plans, though it seems likely that the console's nature will continue to spark more unique efforts like the dismally boring Umbrella Chronicles...
Ouch...
Plaid Ninja @ Oct 4th 2007 10:52AM
Its all nice and good, but lets see Okami on 360. HD & Achievments :) :) :)
