Joystiq hands-on: Tomb Raider Anniversary (Wii)

There's "over three hours" of Wii-specific content promised, and the majority of it comes in the form of motion-sensitive mini-games. There's Lara with a pick axe unearthing clues; Lara digging for buried treasures; and Lara taking charcoal rubbings for her journal. All use the Wiimote's pointer, mimicking what you'd normally find in a DS game (think: psuedo-archeology game Spectrobes). It's gimmicky, yes -- but there are times where the physicality adds an appreciable amount of depth to the experience. In one segment of the game, we had to uncover symbols, hidden away under some dust. With those symbols in mind, we had to draw them in sand to unlock a door. Drawing with the Wiimote added a whole new layer to what was originally a very simple puzzle. Thankfully, the system is forgiving enough to recognize even the shakiest of gestures.
Not only has Lara's "intelligence" been expanded upon for Wii, combat has received a major overhaul as well. For the first time in the franchise, players will aim and shoot freely while moving. Players will have to use the pointer to manually aim at the various enemies on the screen while performing Lara's signature dodges. It can be awkward at first, but Crystal Dynamics is so confident in their battle system that they won't give players the option to switch to more traditional controls. "All or nothing," as we were told by Gray. To ease away potential frustrations, there is an overly generous hit detection system that requires only a marginal amount of accuracy. Harder difficulties, we're told, will require a much steadier shot.

Finally, the cinematic QTE sequences of Tomb Raider Anniversary also get a Wii-makeover. Instead of pressing buttons, you'll have to perform motions, as shown by a mini-Lara that appears on the screen. It's an intriguing concept meant to make the experience that much more engrossing. But to be honest, it looks silly.
Nintendo fans have been traditionally Lara-deprived, and Anniversary is a welcome addition to the Wii library. The content added for this Wii port often feels gimmicky, but because motion controls are integrated into every facet of the game, this Wii production fares far better than other cheap cash-ins. In fact, the new Wii-specific content adds to the lore and mythos of the character, successfully reminding players that Lara is an intelligent archaeologist. So when can we expect the Nintendo follow-up that reminds us Mario's actually a plumber?

Doesnt matter how good it is, it will be outsold by MarioParty 8, 50 to 1 ... Wii demographic dont care about these types of games.. its a PROVEN FACT. Even minigames like Boogie dont do well on the Wii.
Fernando Rocker (NDF - Water Ring) @ Oct 3rd 2007 1:07PM
If they make good games, they will sell. Just look Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition.
How a company want to sell wel if they throw games like Bug Island or Godzilla against games like Metroid, or Mario Galaxy?
By the way, you are more anoying than me. Really.

The Wii playerbase rating-system.
1/5: It's a game that, while good doesn't use motion controls
2/5: It uses motion controls
3/5: It's a compilation of minigames
4/5: It's a compilation of minigames with Mario in it
5/5: It's a compilation of minigames with Mario in it, uses motion controls, and is fun to play while drunk (or it's one of Nintendo's standby titles i.e. metroid, zelda, mario)

Tomb Raider Anniversary hasn't sold all that well on any system. Plus, there isn't much press hype (but many good reviews) for the game, so it likely won't sell very well on the Wii, regardless of your PROVEN FACT (plz cite). The only people who would really want this game are those that want to relive the original. That's not the Wii's fault.

That was just stupid.

First you said that only minigames sell, then you admit that boogie sold like shit?
Which is it?

"it will be outsold by MarioParty 8"
&
"Even minigames like Boogie dont do well on the Wii"
Way to contradict your own point there, buddy. You sure do know everything, don'tcha?

Sounds like at bad Lair type move with not offering the other option.
have this on the ps2 and love the game.

This is cool, but I think I'll wait for the XBLA download version. I saved my copy of Legend just for that purpose.
WiNG @ Oct 3rd 2007 1:11PM
This is a great game. I have it on the PC and kind of regret it now, since I think the Wii controls will be better without a gigantic drop in visuals (it is not a graphical powerhouse to start with!)
aristokrat @ Oct 3rd 2007 1:36PM
What is this? A Wii game with aim-assist? So much for the supposedly superior fps controls...
Kidding aside, it sounds like it could be fun, but if I wanted to draw shapes in the sand, I'd go to the beach.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 3rd 2007 2:07PM
Yes, and if you wanted to actually kill terrorists, you'd join the army.
Come on...don't resort to that silly old argument!

Tomb raider died years ago....
Next.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 3rd 2007 2:05PM
So...did you like the game or not?
The write up is fairly ambiguous...
Andrew Yoon @ Oct 3rd 2007 2:19PM
I wasn't overwhelmingly excited while playing the game, but I certainly wasn't bored as well. I think the neutral attitude of the write-up correctly reflects my attitude on the game: it's very solid, but far from inspirational. I think it certainly offers a lot more than other Wii games, and fans should def. take notice.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 3rd 2007 3:27PM
Thanks!

I never got around to playing Anniversary, so I might want to pick this one up. I was completely done with Tomb Raider until a friend of mine all but strapped me to my chair and made me play Legend (on the PC, I found the console port to be a bit rough and ugly). It looks like the graphics are a lot sharper in those stills - proof that the Wii can pump out decent (if not mind blowing) visuals when the developer pays more than minimum wage for a texture artist.
Miharu @ Oct 3rd 2007 3:53PM
I'm really looking forward to this! Blablabla, Wii collecting dust etc. I really love Tomb Raider games but I never even played Legend (was looking forward to buying the gamecube version but the promised extra content never came so I'll get it later for 360 when I get one), oh well the thing is the PC version that comes with a bonus dvd of making of and such is like 25€ but this Wii version will surely be over 50€.
rDr4g0n @ Oct 3rd 2007 4:15PM
the mini review doesnt really mention the graphics, and im curious to see how they compare to the other releases. besides in an exploration based game like tomb raider, graphics are pretty important.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 3rd 2007 6:03PM
i liked legend but these minigames sound generally annoying. and this isn't the first time in the series you could run 'n gun, i remember shooting baddies while diving around in legend
Mike @ Nov 30th 2007 3:11PM
I have a problem with updating license or software. could you, please, help me?
