"19-30 somethings"

Actually, if that's true, then it's most certainly an awfully black mark on the adolescent sexism here: that's it's being performed by adults. There's no superiority or broad philosophies on gender, as grown men with sexist attitudes might hold. There is just a mass of fear, stupid jokes, misinformation, and unfamiliarity about women. The kind of thing people, regardless of their opinions about women, should well be over by the end of high school.

It's the sad source of nerd-misogyny/misanthropism: the inability to grow out of adolescent regard for the opposite sex for most of their adult lives. Women don't find you creepy because you're goofy and play FPSs all day. You're creepy because you still think you're 17 and have been unwilling or unable to pull yourself out of this immature way of thinking. The posts on boards like this illustrate that it's not just a perception, but a real epidemic problem of grotesque immaturity about women and sex that goes WAY too far into your adulthood.

"But thats never going to change. It's the internet, where people go to be assholes."

And I can see you don't want it to change. Maybe it's that "generation raised by women" issue that's keeping your ilk from finally escaping the end of childhood and becoming adult males. Whatever the problem, it's nothing to be proud of, and it's not something you should accept with a shrug. It's something you should actively work against in order to be a normal and sexually healthy human being.

I see you totally missed the point where everybody here is an asshole on purpose because its more fun than being nice.

Here's an example: You'll have better luck finding a boyfriend if you'd stop being so judgmental and bitchy.

If you think guys acting like adolescence is a black mark, then you really don't understand men.

This is what men are like. To the core. The ones that aren't are going against their very natures by being pansies. All men, regardless of age or upbringing makes a crude or crass joke from time to time. Doesn't make them anti-women, and it doesnt' make them male chauvanists: it makes them Men.

Thats something you Feminazi's fail to understand. You can't change men, because its in our nature to be crude, crass, and immature. Its FUN. If you could loosen up a bit and cut loose amongst your friends, you might actually enjoy yourself.

I'd much rather be who I am that a stuck up feminist. Your probably the kind of feminist who's insulted when a man opens the door for a woman, or your the kind of hypocritical feminist who expects a man to open the door for a woman, and then treat her no differently than other men any other time.

Here's a newsflash: When girls get on the internet, they're exposed to and treated the same as every guy would treat another guy. Men don't temper their language around them, and they're subjected to all the same ridicule any other internet denizen would be treated.

The age of chivalry is over, and Feminism is what killed it. Sorry you think that we're acting like such adolescents, but the reality of the situation is that until feminism came along, men hid this part of themselves from women. Now, we've got no reason to hide it anymore, since women are just the same as men.

Welcome to equality.

Men acting like adolescence (sic) is a black mark, yes. The problem is the creep of _adolescent_sexism_: the simple, misinformed, sad sexism that as the years pass, "men" in their late 20's continue to act upon. This isn't "women can't drive" sexism. It's much, much stupider. It's not "the way it's always been", it's the way people act in places like this because of the culture that the gaming community enjoys conveying and sees nothing wrong with. It isn't masculine. Sexism can be masculine. This isn't. It's pimple-face, poo-on-a-stick, Mary Jane Rottencrotch bullshit. Behaving like this up until you're thirty is a fucking mental illness.

It is not insulting.
It is fucking embarrassing.

BTW, chivalry is dead? feminazi? Try again, kiddo.

No, really, you don't know what you're talking about. I work in an office with people aged 25-68, and each and every one of us will make an off collar joke of this calibur at least once a week.

You have a concentration of this here at joystiq, because its a VIDEO GAME forum. Seriously, have you read the writing here, from the bloggers I mean? What kind of audience to you think that attracts. Add onto that its a VIDEO GAME blog, we're all stuck in our teens playing video games anyway.

And how is it embarrassing when we know its not serious. Honestly. Off color jokes are still jokes. Like I said further down, see family guy as an example. Is Seth McFarlane embarrassing himself whenever he has peter griffin make a sexist joke? If he is, then he's embarrassing himself all the way to the bank.

I mean, we could go into a much broader and deeper discussion about how popular culture and media are turning men into chauvanists and women into sluts, but thats neither here nor there. What is here is the fact you're overreacting to comments made on a board whose sole existence is for the entertainment of bored people at work, trying to make the day go by faster. Jokes are tongue in cheek. Nobody at home, in their real life, thinks "Women are only good for cookin' and breedin'". I certainly don't. But I can see the humor in saying so in response to an article that could easily be construed as sexist. I also believe in respecting women in a chivalrous manner, dispite how unacceptable this is becoming in our culture.

Personally, I prefer more philisophical discussions, like this, over "OMG HALOZ ONLY RUNS AT 640P LULZ!"

umm... how can *men* be immature and adolescent by default? A man is an adult male human. If he's immature or acts like an adolescent it means he's not a man, he's a boy. If you're 40 and still a boy there's definitely something wrong with you. Same with women.

I wish there was some algorithm in existence that sterilized a moron the exact moment they posted something 'ironic' to a forum.

Man, I guess the internet has lost its sense of humor lately. People who get offended by sexist/racist/whatever humor need to lighten up a bit, if you can't laugh at something absurd you really can't say you're living.

Just play hours and hours of Tetris. It supposedly helps with the whole spatial thing. The New Tetris is the best one. Great music too.

My gf will play the Wii if it's sports. She'll play NES with me. But the second I get out a real game like Halo 3 or Metroid 3 or something else she wants no part in it.

Maybe this study will help. "Honey, you need to play some split screen Slayer with me so you're not so dumb mkay."

Yeah, that'll get her.

Internet. Serious Business.

As far as I'm concerned, jokes are fine. I've been on the receiving end of white jokes from every race and guy jokes from gals, and you know what? I LAUGH!

Seriously, if you get offended by a joke, get the chip off your shoulder.

Considering your post has somewhere between 2 and 3 spelling/grammatical errors itself, I'd keep my mouth the fuck shut if I were you.

It is profoundly disturbing, Crono, that you so gleefully accept the Greater Internet F**kwad theory (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19) as incontrovertible fact; it is meant to be railed against, not revelled in! To say "that's life, that's the internet", or "it's just Joystiq!" is to say that you are free from the consequences of your actions, merely because you cannot observe those consequences firsthand, and you are immune to any reprecussions.

I take particular issue with your statement, "its alot more entertaining being a dick than saying nice things all the time. Most of us are probably very nice people in person." This is both vile and somewhat schizophrenic. Certainly, this should not be the worldview of a civilized person between the ages of 19-30.

Obviously, this is Joystiq, and the importance of the discussion here is minimal in the grand scheme of things. But, even in anonymity, you lead by example, dammit! If you are acting like an ignorant child, believing that your words and deeds have no consequences just because you cannot be physically reprimanded for them (read: kicked in the nads by a justifiably angry lady), then you are a part of the problem of "That's the internet!" that you claim can never be solved.

Likewise, everyone whose response to this discussion is "Geez, have a sense of humor": You are like an AOL message board user posting "me too". You contribute nothing to the conversation at hand. Though Balla360, I'm interested as to where you picked up "call the Waaaaambulance!" I thought that meme wasn't all that widespread? ;)

Seriously, you're taking this way to seriously. Take a deep breath, realize that the internet is full of assholes, and nobody in the first 20 or so comments was saying anything seriously, and everything will be OK. I can't think of anybody here in all my time posting that qualifies as a certifiable sexist. All we have here are jokes in bad taste. Doesn't make us sexist, just means we have a twisted sense of humor (see family guy, et al). And if you can't handle jokes in bad taste, feel free to visit other websites that don't have a community making jokes in bad taste.

But good luck finding those.

I have yet to hear a joke about men or about white people that is offensive in the slightest. Just because there are no real insults for those in power doesn't make white men better at taking jokes and that other ethnicities and genders should "toughen up." In fact, the way most people insult men is by calling them women or calling them gay, under the misconception that gay men are basically women in men's bodies.

To argue that sexism is OK because everybody does it is arguing for institutionalized sexism, in which women can't feel comfortable anywhere. Women who don't like it and actually say so are "too uptight" and women who like it or pretend to be ok with it are cool and "just one of the guys."

In sexual harassment law, they go not by actual threat but by the perceived threat. If a man has a heart attack and dies because you pulled a squirt gun on him, you're charged with murder. You ARE the reason he died. If you make a woman feel threatened at work, you are charged with sexual harassment, whether you did it intentionally or not. You are the reason she didn't feel safe at work.

wow, can anyone say sexist? I can, and will. Did it occur to any of these brain dead researchers that social divisions account for differences in measured spatial abilities? That because men are more likely to be employed in jobs that require spatial abilities that their spatial abilities are honed while women's aren't? Doesn't the second study point to the fact that spatial differences are merely a matter of practice and not of natural ability? Isn't this too obvious? Maybe not. I know firsthand how dumb researchers can be.

Nevermind they did the study on a broad range of age groups, some with jobs, and some without.

Its not sexist if the data backs up the position. Its been shown time and time again that women are not as adept at thinking spacially than men. What this study shows is that those differences can be overcome by exercising that portion of the brain.

Except its not real sexism HERE. If people were making those comments to women's face in a totally serious manner, it would be sexist and sexual harrassment (see peter griffins "boob" joke in the episode where he emotionally turns into a woman).

Its off color comedy. Thats it. No reason to take it so seriously.
