Ugly new Playstation logo discovered

German gaming news site GameFront has uncovered a Japanese trademark filed by Sony, which features the familiar four Playstation shape buttons mapped around the surface of a sphere. It's doubtful that this could be the logo for the inevitable Playstation 4 (after all, where's the Spiderman font?). More likely is that the logo is an icon to be displayed in-game or on game boxes -- perhaps advertising a worldwide connectivity feature. Equally likely is that the symbol could ultimately become nothing, and be one more paranoid trademark made during a creative meeting.

We're hoping for the latter, as the logo looks like a early-90s design reject, on par with that awful Sega Channel logo. Any other ideas?

It's a whole lot better than the rainbow PS logo they've been using since PS1. I don't dislike it but it could probably use some tweaking.

It'd look a lot cooler if the triangle button was facing the way it does on the controller...
I miss the original offbeat gray with a techno rainbow on the front. Nowadays it's always only dressed in black and thinks it's better than us. I want to steal it's trench coat.

10 bucks says that Sony will do a graffiti campaign all over the country like they did years ago with the PSP.

It's not bad. It's basically a circle, which means it can fit in a lot of places and also appear self-contained, unlike the current P-lowercase-S logo. Also the buttons are around a circle, or globe, which is probably meant to signify a worldwide online gaming community [who have 3 games to play].

So yeah, they basically ripped off the Xbox 360 logo. But it shows a lot more style than "Playstation 3" smeared across a box in the Spider-Man font.

I like it, as long as it stays monochromatic. But then again I'm not fond of what people call "design" and "style" these days.

If you make the circle in the middle red and extend the borders out to be rectangular (wider than tall), it could be the new Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan logo (Japanese flag behind the "sphere" of buttons).
