yey, an exclusive game that's not being ported to PC with extra content.

Seriously, those who call this a Tomb-raider rip have to seriously look at their halo's, their GoW's, their whatever the newest FPS is. None of these games are innovative...they are fun however. So stop shitting on everything that is posted just because you have some wierd obsession with hating Sony.

btw fernando...you can't possibly enjoy the Wii that much. It's actually a terrible system unless you have some people over for some party gaming..playing the wii by yourself is equivalant to staring at the ceiling.

I think GoW had some pretty innovative game mechanics, sure they have probably done before, somewhere, but it's about implementing them in a good coherent way together with other features.

@Slaziman

I agree about GoW, but he makes a valid point. In these comments we see people trying to bash this game as a Tomb Raider or GoW clone, yet many of the same people were pumped about Halo 3 despite that fact that it doesn't do anything new. Innovation is great, but a game doesn't have to be completely innovative to be fun, nor does innovation equal fun. Plus, people are basing all their opinions about it's gameplay off a few videos right now anyway. Maybe everything will come together in a refreshing way in the final game. For example, you mentioned Gears putting things that weren't necessarily new together coherently... well, aren't Tomb Raider and Gears pretty disimilar games? If they can combine aspects of the two games in a good way isn't that the same situation?

Oh yeah I totally agree that the comparison between Tomb Raider and Uncharted is just bullshit

^ and by that I mean the sentiment that it somehow makes Uncharted less fun, because all things considered they do share some similarities.

I dont see how comparing something to Gears or Tomb raider is a bad thing. Both games are great. TR:A is awesome. Im jealous of the 360 people who get to play this in HD.
Theres a reason Tomb raider was so popular, and its not becuase people want to fuck lara, although grandmas boy was great!

too many jealous people here, jealous of this great game.

If this was on the 360 many people would get way too excited.

wha?

how did this turn into a flamewar?

next up; why does joystiq have to put a snide comment in *EVERY SINGLE Playstation 3 related thread?

was the line "Over at Sony's developer and corporate soapbox" even necessary in this post? seriously. i *NEVER see that shit on any Wii or 360 related stories, unless it's an obvious and deserving entry.

this story was simply about a post on the Playstation Blog. there was no PR pimping or whoring in this story, simply an announcement that the game would support 1080i, which, last i checked, you guys bitched about incessantly for the past year when PS3 games *WOULDN'T support 1080i, and just supported the "p" resolutions, so those with older sets were screwed.

this story is Naughty Dog saying, "we feel you, and we've addressed the issue."

i don't see how snide comments about something that should make gamers with older HDTVs be treated with such obvious disdain.

i also noted that both stories i read today with the smarmy comments were from you, Dan. if you have such a bone to pick with Sony, despite their obvious efforts to make ammends for the stupidity of the past year, *WHY talk about it?

this is a "blog," right (which is what you guys fall back on whenever you get flack for these sorts of stories, but then you flip flop to "respected games journalists" when the need suits you: make up your minds, and act accordingly. no wavering)? you guys are like the equivilant of a tabloid mag for games here.

i get less biased news from places like Wii Fanboy, PSP/PS3 Fanboy, and 360 Fanboy, and *THOSE GUYS are the fanboy corners! you'd *EXPECT them to include snide, smarmy, and smartass remarks in every story.

i actually didn't mean to go off on this tirade, so bringing it back to Uncharted and the story at hand: the game supporting an older resolution is a *GOOD thing, and Naughty Dog's track record for making *EXCELLENT games on the past two generations of hardware gives me, at the least, the confidence to say that Uncharted will probably be *FUN.

remember when gamers used to talk about the *GAMES and how much *FUN they were? probably not, since most of you guys probably popped your gaming cherry on Halo.

for us older folks, however, we understand that *EVERY SINGLE GAME, doesn't have to be a "revolutionary," "innovative," "new," and "fresh" experience. simply *FUN.

also, not every game has to be a AAA effort. there's nothing wrong with an A, or even a B. really.

does the fact that Metal Gear Solid 3 is more polished and refined than Indigo Prophecy make Indigo a bad game? of *COURSE NOT. it's an awesome game.

is GTA: San Andreas any less of a kickass game even though it doesn't look or play like Halo? NO.

you joystiq readers and posters need to lighten up and remember that this is *GAMING. it's about *ENTERTAINMENT, and *ENTERTAINMENT ONLY.

yes, there will be your gaming equivalents of Citizen Kane, but there will also be your gaming equivalents of a Resident Evil Extinction (pure popcorn fluff, but entertaining nonetheless). as long as people are having fun and enjoying themselves, it ultimately doesn't matter.

Uncharted looks sweet, and the Gears of War comparisons shouldn't cause so much of a stir, since *NAUGHTY DOG THEMSELVES stated that they love the Gears of War cover system, and based their system off of it.

if you watched that 9 minute gameplay vid from Gamersyde (i think joystiq even did a story on it), you'd see that the game is a mashup of Gears of War (cover system), Resident Evil 4 (aiming and shooting), Tomb Raider (exploring an exotic, lush locale rife with mystery and intrigue), and Prince of Persia (platforming and brain puzzles). the thing that separates this game from all the other games out there that have tried to mish-mash genres, is that it looks like Uncharted is pulling it off.

my best friend, who's as much of a diehard gamer as i am, was concerned about Uncharted and it's mixing of various gaming elements, because of the history of those types of games never really working right. after watching the gameplay video, he admitted that it just might work.

considering that Naughty Dog was one of the *FIRST developers to make a game where there were *NO LOAD times or transition segments between levels with Jak and Daxter on the PS2 (a *YEAR ONE PS2 title, by the way), i have confidence in their skills. not to mention their creativity and knack for creating personable characters (ie, Crash Bandicoot, Jak, and Daxter).

it's almost like a companies past pedigree of quality doesn't apply anymore to some of you guys.

if that's the case, i feel sorry for what Bungie does next, as, apparently, the fact that they created the Halo series shouldn't matter to any of you guys, and i expect to see very similar comments when their next game is announced in a year or so (yeah, right. i forgot, when it's a primarily X Box developer, it's all good, but when it's a Sony developer, *EVERYTHING is held against them).

Damn... nice post. It really is pathetic how almost every single sotry that mentions Sony turns into a flame war, even when it's good news. And it's rather disgusting how so many so-called gamers are willing to write off this game just because it's a Sony exclusive... calling it a "poor man's this" or a "clone of that" despite that fact it's being developed by a very reputable developer with an establish history of quality games. If this was a 360 game these same people would be gushing over it.

to Vid: i agree 100%. it seems to me that lately, PS3 games have been being graded on a much harder curve than 360 games, simply because of the dumb promises and bull that PR have been spewing.

and this is coming from the *GAMING MEDIA! the people who know that all that E3 primping and posturing and interview yammering is simply that: hyping their system and their games.

you have to be a truly young, or naive person to believe *ANYTHING these people say to you, whether it be Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, or even sights like this. in the business world, *EVERYONE has an agenda, and for the big three console giants, that agenda is to sell their shit and make money off of it.

i learned the hard way to simply tune all that crap out, buy the stuff that interests me, and if it turns out to be a dud, oh well, at least i gave it a shot.

for example, i *LIKE the game Lair, even though, according to popular concensus, i'm supposed to *HATE THE GAME WITH A PASSION.

according to film critics, "Army of Darkness," is a crappy movie, but i love that too.

what matters to *ME, is what *I like, what *I enjoy. what do i care if Lair averages a 5/10 when i'm having a good time (within reason; the game is *NOT a AAA effort, don't let the fanboys get it twisted. but the game isn't utter trash either. at least to me)?

back to my original point; good games for the Playstation 3 seem to be getting downplayed for different reasons, and different standards to 360, and even Wii games.

i don't see 360 games like Gears of War, Halo 3, and Bioshock being demoted 2 points or more for being short like Heavenly Sword, despite almost universal praise of Heavenly Sword's "gorgeous visuals, sound, and audio design," and "really fun, satisfying combat."

i don't see Wii games being demoted 2 points or more for not having online or multi-player (again, like Heavenly Sword, and the media is already sharpening it's claws in preparation for cutting Uncharted's score down for not having MP).

so, apparently, what they're saying, is that all the single player, and short games we've ever played as children and young adults should be cut down 2 points or more for not having a multi-player element, and for being short.

so i guess Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, which can be beaten in less than 5 hours, and Symphony of the Night (i can get through it in less than 4), should be rated about a 6 or 7 then, despite their superlative gameplay?

or does that only apply to the game if it's on the Playstation 3?

it often seems that way, when a short but sweet game like Halo 3 get's 9's and 10s across the board, and a short *AND single player only game like Bioshock gets 9's and 10's across the board, but a short, pretty, and *FUN game like Heavenly Sword is getting 6's 7's and 8's, *DESPITE the fact that the game that *IS there is quite enjoyable and *FUN.

man, that really *PISSES me off.

in other news, i can't wait to see how the gaming community and press respond to the fact that ign gave Folklore a 9/10. sleeper hit? after playing *ALL of the various demos of the game, i think it just might be.

@ Figboy

I pretty much agreed with your first post, but your second one isn't quite as solid.

First of all, comparing Heavenly Sword to Bioshock is not fair, as they're two different experiences altogether. But, for the sake or argument, I suppose I can.

Bioshock scored higher than Heavenly Sword for a few reasons...

1) It's 12-15 hours long, not 6-8 hours long like Heavenly Sword. As well, there is alot more replay, as every encounter can be vastly different, and there are inherent moral choices, although I believe those to be not as fleshed out as advertised, but they are still present none-the-less.

2) It's experimenting with something that isn't done too often with Plasmids, and it pulls it off pretty well, along with the RPG-lite elements, it helps mix things up. Games that HAVE done similar things to Bioshock, haven't done it as well.

HS, on the other hand, for the most part, is quite repetitive, and games like God of War have straight-up done it better than HS did.

3) There's also the fact that the world of Rapture feels real, and so does the plight of it's inhabitants, and it really helps to pull you into the game and make you feel like a part of the story.

HS kind of shoves you into the story, with little background. It feels like you're starting on the final chapter of the game.

4)Also, despite it's short length, that fact that it's combat starts to feel repetitive near the end is a bad sign.

Now, as for why Halo 3 got better scored than HS, that's simple: It's longer than HS, can be played through many times with 4 player online co-op, and it has fantastic multi-player, forge mode is awesome, and the Replay Theatre should be included in every game from now on.

Is Halo 3 revolutionary? Not really, you could make an argument that the Theatre and Forge modes are, but really, what makes H3 so great is the amazing amount of content, coupled with fantastic production values, and a really solid gameplay foundation.

In reality, the game you should probably be comparing HS to most is Stranglehold. They're both great games while the last, but the short Singleplayer and lackluster/non-existant Multiplayer is what ultimately hold them back from being really outstanding.

Coincidently, they both averaged around 80%. Funny, huh?

You Sony guys are a pretty defensive bunch eh?
Don't worry though, I'm sure system sales will catch up once they run out of Wii's to sell doing the holiday season!
All kidding aside, it would be nice to have another good game for the system. I've been using my 360 way more than the PS3 since I stopped playing Resistance, especially since Halo 3 is giving me my multi-player fix and then some!
Here's hoping Uncharted does will since I loved Jak and Daxter!

Well as an admitted 360 fanboy I will say that this title looks promising for the PS3. I would not lump it in as a rip off of anything until we have really seen the gameplay mechanics/storyline, etc.
On another note...wasn't it the SONY fanboys or was it just SONY screaming how every game on PS3 would run at 1080p...not that it makes a difference..I love Halo 3.
