There's a bit of bubbling on the internets that post-Halo 3, Bungie and Microsoft might split ways. This is seeming more and more unlikely, but if it were to ever happen, Microsoft would most likely retain rights to their FPS cash cow, and the milking would begin. The question is, who would be signed to develop the next true Halo sequel?
Over at MTV's Multiplayer blog, Stephen Totilo does the dirty work and compiles a list of likely suspects to continue the franchise. Notable on the radar are developers like Rare, Free Radical, and id, with each possibility being given "wholly speculative" odds on the likelihood of such a thing ever happening.
Of course, it's all just speculation at this point, but it never hurts to wonder. Who could work best with Bungie's golden franchise? For that matter, who could do the most damage to its hallowed reputation?

In a way, I think you could say it already has--Halo Wars, Peter Jackson's project, the Halo movie, Halo DS, and no telling how many other projects that Microsoft has pushed for. Actually, this brings up another issue: if master chief was as versatile a character as mario (and had been around for 20 years), would he match the no. of Mario's appearance in games? Isn't it a little naive to think that he wouldn't?

id because they can handle the game's art style, but Free Radical because they're looking like they can make gameplay different just by coming up with the concept rebels vs. soldiers in Haze.
So either id or Free Radical.

Well, since 4 monkeys at the zoo could make a master chief poo sculpture and it would sell a million copies in it's first 12 hours, I really don't think MS cares WHO develops the next halo

First of all, it isn't going to be HALO 4. That story arc is done. It would be set in the Halo universe.
Second.. that would suck. That's like passing on a franchise as big as LORD OF THE RINGS or STAR WARS to Michael Bay.
Third... Bungie and Halo go hand and hand. Don't milk a franchise because of the name. If you can't make it right, don't make it at all.
Why is there so much hating and speculation of Bungie and Halo after Halo 3's release. All from fans of other systems and people that don't play the game AT ALL. "Oh it's just more of the same. It doesn't look much better than Halo 2... blah blah blah." You people are clueless. This is one of the most fun titles to come along in YEARS!! I have friends that play Halo 3 more than I do and I was a hardcore Halo 2 fan. Now you can mute the other TRASH TALKING team, it has more balanced weapons and vehicles, better maps and gameplay types. MUCH MUCH better game then in the past. If you lose you can also go back and watch videos to see how you lost. It's the best online game EVER!! You haters are just jealous that you own another console or that you suck!!!

To all the people saying id would make a good Halo, did any of you actually play Doom3 or the last Quake? Ugh. And people say H3 was generic!
I'd say hand it over to Rare (without a time constraint) or Free Radical (since Haze basically looks like a Halo ripoff anyway.) Just whatever you do, keep it the hell away from Team Ninja...at least until they learn how a proper camera works.

I would say either Starbreeze (Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness) or Bioware. I honestly think one of those companies could do something really special with the Halo franchise.

No matter which company gets the honor of making Halo4, gamers are still going to bitch about it not being as good.
It's already happening before Guitar Hero III is coming out.

To be perfectly honest, if id took over the franchise, it would probably drastically improve. Just not team ninja. It's bad enough they've destroyed all their own franchises. They don't need to go ruining other people's as well.

If id got it, Carmack would probably hand it off to someone like Raven or Splash Damage while using the latest idtech (probably 5/Rage). I could see Raven doing H4 as (from the games I've played from them, SoFII, Jedi Knight games, etc) they use this sort of "formula" to their game design that can work for Halo. I haven't touched H3 yet, but the first two felt kind of like that formula.

THERE WILL NOT BE A HALO 4!!!

People are extremely naive to think there will not be either
A) A Halo 4
B) Another FPS with "Halo" in big letters in the title on the case.
Do you honestly, I mean, HONESTLY think Microsoft gives two and a half craps, seriously, about artistic integrity, developer desires, and such, over making money? Honestly, do you? DO YOU?
In the 0.00000000000001% Chance that the next game wasn't called Halo, or something like that, you can bet your ass, it'd have a big gigantic label on it saying "FROM THE SAME TEAM THAT BROUGHT YOU HALO!", and it'd even still sell pretty mediocre. Gotta have that big ol' Halo title on your package.

I'm with tsoul - my money is on Raven. Unless Starbreeze can prove they are not a one-hit wonder (Chronicles of Riddick) then I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole. The Darkness was a major letdown from Riddick.

Since this is all kinda moot anyway (Bungie isn't going anywhere)...but if one were to speculate:
since Bungie has lots of respect for Team Ninja (see Hayabusa armor for MC in Halo3), I'd say that they'd make the next story arc of the Master Chief (confirmed it will NOT be called Halo if another Master Chief game is made by Bungie--straight from Bungie themselves, Otis).
and while we're speculating the impossible...
it'd be awesome if they gave it to Nintendo to develop with Shigeru Miyamoto at the helm. this would also tie in nicely with the Halo DS rumor.

I would like to see a Halo: Fall of Reach or Ghosts of Onyx type game. I mean there were other Spartans that were alive during the events of Halo 3. Fall of Reach would be a prequel and Ghosts of Onyx would occur during Halo 3. I'm not sure how it would all work though.

Does anyone actually care about speculation from some douchebag at MTV? G4 is actually more in touch than MTV when it comes to gaming, and that's saying something.
Personally, I think that Namco Bandai should produce Halo 4, but as a card collecting game.
Or KOEI should do it, since they're the only company that could possibly make the plot of the Halo franchise any more of a snorefest than it already is.

Because of the money involved, I can't imagine Microsoft abandoning the Halo series.
And Bungie would be incredbily stupid to stop working on the cash cow they created.
I don't see Bungie leaving Microsoft, nor do I see another third party continuing the series, however I do think other parties will contribute to the Halo universe, much like what is occuring with Viva Pinata.
I think what's happening right now, is that some of those who worked on Halo 3 have probably since left Microsoft/Bungie as they project is over and perhaps they're either on break or going to work on something else. Developers come and go with every project.
But I'd be shocked if Bungie didn't have some plan for SOMETHING after Halo 3 already brewing.

Personally I'd like to see what CAPCOM could do with Halo 4. Lost Planet is very much in the same genre as Halo games (run-n-gun, vehicles, etc), plus Halo 4 would look amazing on the Resident Evil 5 engine. The game and the system (Xbox360 or Xbox720) would sell better in Japan just based on the developer's name alone.

Open your ears and listen loud and clear:
If it's not Bungie, it's not Halo. Period. And if marketers think fans are too stupid to notice or care, boy will they be in for a nasty surprise.
there will be spinoff's and whatnot but as far as 'Halo 4' is concerned, don't hold your breath. Bungie, after almost a decade, has to be flat-out burnt out, sick n' tired of Halo and have every right to want to move on to something else.
if they can do what they've done for the FPS genre and apply it to other's: Survival horror, RPG, RTS, action-adventure, platform, the possibilities are endless...so long as they continue to operate with daddy Gates covering the budget.

come on please.
at the end of the game halo 3 beaten on legendary is the "secret" ending where master chief is in his broken space vessel sleeping, andddddd
his vessel is flying, and [is] going to go into the atmosphere of marathon.
marathon is either a planet, or a vehicle.
im not sure on that one. but i am positive about "halo 4" being called marathon because there is also an achievement on halo 3 called marathon man.
and if you look at bungies history. they will talk about how marathon is the "structure" of halo and how halo is the prelude to marathon, in addition to bungies creators talking about how the master chief and the star player in marathon are "similar".
this is bungies plan of world domination people.
and they will achieve this very fast.
and if u would like me to give you insight about this topic. email me
heathderr@yahoo.com
i have all the info you need on this one.
for i am, halos huge, all knowing of halo fan.
