Wow, I bet Microsoft is really happy they got their $300,000,000 in the week before this hit. I mean, what if the four people who actually read it decide not to purchase!

Exactly. You people shouldn't be taking this review too seriously. All Zero Punctuation does is critique games that they know are good, but they do it just for fun.

Hates it? He said he doesn't think it's bad, it's just decidedly average. I'm not sure if "average" is a fair grade considering the production value, but I'll agree with "generic" I guess.

I don't think anyone has every really noted this but halo is just tribes with no class system. its not to say i don't enjoy the game, but its not ground breaking by any means.

I have nothing against Halo. I like it and dislike it for certain things. But I just want to say this:

...I LOVE Zero Punctuation

I totally agree with this review, Halo 3 is average. The original is still the best in the series and HALO 2 is the worst.

The autoaim on Halo makes it so easy, the game basically plays itself. I don't know about you but I usually just put down the controller and watch MC do his thing, it's THAT easy!!

Wait, WTF??

Hey, hey!

Yahtzee's Australian.

Not British.

Also, while his reviews are meant primarily to be taken as funny, they also do a great job of stripping away the levels of hype and actually reviewing a game based on its own merits.

I think the fact that he hasn't played Halo 1 or 2 makes him even more qualified to give an honest review because he's less likely to go easy on the title because he's invested in it or something.

Plus they're fucking hilarious, I don't care who you are.

Um no, he was born in Britain and now lives in Australia. He's got a British accent! Seems like an ideal combination though - he swears like an Australian and this combined with the British sarcasm and wit is a perfect combo.

This guy's reviews are always pretty funny and entertaining but all he does is go on and on about the negative aspects of the games he reviews. Even with games that he likes, like Bioshock, he spends about 3 seconds on the good aspects and then spends the rest of the 5 minutes on everything that he hates about it. It makes for a very unbalanced review. I like them because they are funny but I would never base a purchase off of them.

Well its pretty obvious in Mr.Siegel writing that he seems to disagree with Yahtzee's healthy dose of logic but the truth of the matter is that he was dead on with everything he said and sadly the only people who will disagree with this are the blindly faithful fanboys who seem to enjoy mediocrity in their games.

I really enjoy what Yahtzee normally has to see since he knows how to speak the honest truth about most games, something most journalist in the industry seem to have forgotten how

Oh so I'm a supposedly "blind" fanboy because I actually enjoy Halo? Seriously go fuck yourself. Neither this guy or the reviewers in game mags are wrong. Everyone has their own opinions about games. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone else who likes it is wrong. Jesus Christ I'm getting tired of repeating this shit.

He's spot on!

Halo is, was, and never will be as good as Deus Ex STILL is today.

And the Halo "mythology" or back-story is really non-existant. Aliens attack. Badass marine fights them. As far as video games go, this plot is at least as old as SPACE INVADERS, but I'll be generous and say it's basically DOOM or DUKE NUKEM. This is NOT a "deep" story by any means.

Personally, I think Gold Box will kick it's ass.

To all the people dissing Goldeneye.

If Goldeneye is unplayable, then why is the X-Box Live Arcade and Virtual Console selling TONS of old games? Mario, Contra, Zelda...

You guys sound like Microsoft when they screwed up their backwards compatibility. People love playing good old games because no matter how much games advance the greats always have fun at its core and they work. They simply work.

Fucking morons.

Oh and I agree, a game's Multiplayer mode should not make up for its Single Player. If the game is about multiplayer then why include the fucking mode? Why just not a tutorial? Also, if the polls show that most people care about the story, buy the game for the story and the story is bland as fucking wood being wood...then how can you say the Single Player is insignificant?

Douche bag gamers. Makes me feel sad to be associated with you retard.

Halo1 has best campaign, Halo3 has best multiplayer, after Halo1 the games were being built completely with multiplayer balance in mind, which crippled single-player. (although the AI in Halo 3 provides really fun gameplay, as do the scarabs)

Pisses me off because i'd like Halo canon physics in the games but instead I get weapon balancing, which is bullshit.

Oh, and Goldeneye is the shit, I mean that in a bad way.....get over it already.

lulz i upset teh fanboys

It also pisses me off that the story elements to Halo3 were marketed and hyped a LOT, yet they weren't even the main focus during game development, so what the fuck is the point?

I mean, the novels provide a great sci-fi universe, yet the way they present it in the games is just crap.

Let me break it down for you. As someone stated eariler, games dont age like fine wine. He is somewhat correct in that statement. Most game do not age well due to leaps in technology and end user expectations. Some of these games might be consided great, but when people look back on those games in a few years, they will likely say "It was good for its time." There are, however, a rare few that escape this tread and become "classic" games. People will dust them off 5 or 10 years later, play for a few hours and think to themselves " its just as good as i remember it". They may even come back to it over the next few days to complete it all over again.
For example:
Mario Bros 3
The Legend of Zelda (the first one)
Pac-Man
Tetris
Free Cell/solitaire
Half Life1 /2
Super Smash Bros.(N64)
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Slug
Contra
Sonic 2
and yes Halo (all 3) are games that will have this effect on people.
And yes i know this list isnt all ***inclusive and there are definitely many classics missing ( DK64,Warcraft the RTS, Golden Axe, i could go on but why) but Golden Eye isnt one of them. Even though it was good for its time, its gameplay and controls just dont hold up.
You dont have to take my word for it, pull it out and play it. And while you have the N64 out play smash brothers. Which one plays more like you remember it? Which one is still just as much fun as it was the first day you played it?

***even though I didnt put them on the list, I still think Power Stone 1 and 2 are the best fighting games EVER!!!

I think Yahtzee's point is this: where the hell do you get off giving a game a perfect score, or even a nine, and then say "well that is to say, have of the game is perfect. The other part doesn't count." Metroid Prime 2 loses points for having shitty multiplayer, but Halo 3 is penalized for subpar singleplayer?

Everyone has an opinion and I believe people are just finding things to say bad about Halo just because that's our human nature. Nothing should be this good, nothing should be praised so high. This whole "slipped em $800" thing is retarded on a whole new scale. This game was gonna sale, perfect scores or not. Everyone needs to back off and just play the games they love and stop bringing the people who play the games you supposedly hate down. Enough said.

There are so many people I know who still play golden eye and swear by it 9never liked it myself). Hell, there are still convention gaming parties where golden eye still steals the show.

Halo 1 is the only game of the trilogy that actually has that 'timeless' quality you are talking about. i know people (including myself) who still pull it out to play it. Halo 2 is one of the most hated games everywhere. To say that people still play it is a lie: they play the Halo multiplayer (which really hasn't changed much in 3). NEVER do you see anyone play halo 2 for its single player campaign, if only to brush up on the nonsensical story while getting ready to play Halo 3's equally nonsensical story.

People loved Halo 1 for its story and Coop gameplay. That's where it's true strength lay. Lan was alright, but it wasn't fantastic either.

What does that mean? If ever the Halo community moves on to something better (which they inevitably will) or when MS stops supporting them, then Halo 2 and 3 will gather dust until the discs biodegrade, because the single player sucks.

Halo 1, however, will suddenly get revived as the few Halo fans still around will want their fix of great cinematic action adventure...

Halo 1 was the shit. Everything bungie has made since is diarrhea.
