Not everyone is planning on riding Nintendo's money-printing coattails. In an interview with GameTrailers (embedded above), Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein stated that, as he has on multiple occasions before, that the Unreal and Gears of War developer has no intention on providing middleware support for the Wii.
Rein cited resource concerns, saying that the company is more focused on pushing the limits of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Interestingly, Rein also commented how making Wii graphics engines is not that profitable. "I think unless you're going to sell your engine to Nintendo, you're going for scraps on that platform," he said.
That point has been brought up before, how developers are not interested, and possibly lazy, in developing for the Wii platform and that their budgets for that platform are pretty low. However, from the perspective of a game developer, perhaps Epic could find a way to convert Unreal Tournament 2004 onto Nintendo's platform. The software alone would be profitable, we imagine, and then they'd have Unreal Engine 2 to license out.
Update: As it has been pointed out in the comments below, some Wii titles such as Red Steel do utilize Unreal Engine 2 -- optimized for the GameCube (keep the jokes to yourself, for now). However, we'd be interested to see Epic take the engine an optimize for the Wii's hardware upgrade.
Also, some people seem to be confused by Rein's profit comment. The profits for Epic wouldn't come from game sales but from licensing out the engine. Since most developers don't focus on the graphical prowess of their Wii titles, Epic would not be able to charge much for their engine -- hence why Rein doesn't feel the Wii would be a profitable venture for them.

Even if it is just a teaser trailer, it will be shown next year =)

He has a point. Look at the majority of Wii 3rd party games. They are ugly. I know graphics isn't everything, but they are not nothing either.
UE2 is fine. It would be silly to port Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii.

The guy is full of himself, but rightly so I guess given the success of his game.
Asking whether they'd port something to the Wii was a stupid question in the same way that asking about the PS3 is. To some extent or another they're both MSofts competitors and they're not about to let other people reap the benefits of a successful title.

UT on the Wii? Yeah, awesome, lets put a multiplayer-only game on the Wii when it hardly supports multiplayer as it is.

Wait I'm confused. I thought EPIC said they wont going to use Games For Windows LIVE because its to restrictive (or something) and we would be seeing GoW for Macs?

It's not a Wii dis, he's just saying with the limited manpower Epic has, they are better off focusing their efforts on the PS3/360. I love my Wii, but I'm glad Rein and his team are focusing on a true "next-gen" experience and not just trying to cash in on Wii's popularity.

When he said no profit, he was talking about their engine, not games. There are already engines and middleware solutions for the Wii that make good use of the system's capabilities, so there's little need or demand for their newer engine on the Wii. Unlike the PS3 which is starving for engines and middleware.

Guess the casual crowd doesn't buy games...

the wii really is a bitch slap to classic nintendo fans like myself.
after games like metroid prime 1 and ocarina of time, i really do expect much much more than mediocre retreads like twilight and corruption.
the wii is horror incarnate for gamers who like innovative games.

There is apparently no money on the Wii, but, the PS3?! That thing gets sales like crap gets flies! Why, last week I saw a game sell 50,000 copies! That would more then make our money back, if we charged 1000 dollars a game!

"Look at the PC version of Gears of war is completely utter mind blowing, you have to feel sorry for all those moron that bought the XB360 version".
OMGWTFBBQSAUCE,what o-O?!
Way to go support your fans Epic, you b*stards at least have the decency of releasing Chapter 6 in the marketplace.
Oh the wii don’t worry someday there would be a 3rd party developer that would develop some badass games just for you and not shovelware or crappy minigames with Mario’s face slapped all over them.

corruption is easily a good game, and it's easily the wii's best game, though that's not really saying much.
the wii just isn't capable of making games that amaze the way past games did.

It's not the Wii that is incapable. It's developers. Look at the PS2. It boggles me why people continue to attribute poor software to Nintendo 100%. Nintendo didn't decide to charge $50 for Carnival Games, people. Nintendo didn't decide to tone down the blood in Two Thrones and add waggle.

It seems to me that if epic did end up making games for the wii, theyd be the kind to just tack on motion control and port it out. No big loss.

I am sorry I don't see anything wrong in what he said. His game are graphics heavy and that is not the type of system it is. I would like to see games like the Shadow and Colossus duplicated for the WII though. Games balanced around story and beauty. Not just hyper realistic graphics, and gore.
Matter of fact that is the whole reason I supported the WII, none other at all. The WII to me presents a break away from that sort of gaming idea. So when a developer says "It cost way to much to create a game." They can come to the WII and create a game that wil cost less because they are not spending Xbox360 and PS3 graphics budget but can still form a beautiful story and plot with very good graphics.
This is the problem with gaming today, unless the graphics are insanely high the game developers don't understand how to create a game. And it has gotten worse ever console war. Stories and plot suffer because all they concentrate on is violence, graphics, and effects. I think alot of gamers were hoping for games to come out of WII that were reminiscent of older games that didn't have great graphics so story plot and game play had to hold you.
Case in point, Chrono Trigger, I don't know if people truly understand how the fan base of that game loves it. Compared to todays standards the graphics are horrible, but the imagination in it and story is enthralling. That is what I am expecting from the WII, not Gears of War, Not Halo3 I am expecting a return to gaming as an advanced form of story telling that sucks me in. Or a game so insanely fun I can't be drawn away, Final fight, Streets of rage, games like these can be recreated, (not done over), with new ideas, plots, mechanics, and stories. Graphics will still be beautiful but what I want from the WII is not a graphics power house but a game machine.
Now the problem is if Nintendo can't get that out of their third parties then they need to lead by example. Mark Rein's brand of gaming is perfectly fine and his comments are dead on, why should he lower is standards of making a game just to collect money. On the other hand where are all the game creators hell bent on making new stories and game mechanics? Team Fortress 2 tells me they are out there, it is time for Nintendo to start looking for more, and stop settling for less.

I'm sort of in the middle on this one.
As another poster said, it's not the end of the world if one developer decides not to make Wii games. And it's not even a very big developer (at least not compared to Capcom, Namco, Square Enix etc.), so relax fanboys.
But on the other hand, he's kinda right. Most 3rd party Wii games I've seen (hell, even some first party ones) are pretty damn ugly. Take Cruis'n Wii as a for instance....yuck!

I'd love to see more great 3rd party games for my Wii.
But then I look at what I have - Zelda TP, Paper Mario and Metroid. Publishers will say "See, people who buy Nintendo consoles only buy Nintendo games" to which I say "But that's because you make mostly shovelware for this platform; I'm forced to buy 1st party games, I don't want to play PoP or RE:4 for the 12th time".
What am I looking forward to on the Wii besides Nintendo games? Ummmm.....errr.....Zak&Wiki and that weird japanese-mega-dork-cell-shaded thingy, I guess, although I never got into the japanese otaku sub-culture shyte. So they don't want to release games for the Wii cause they think we only buy party games and 1st party, but we only buy first party and party-games cause that's all there is available, really.
So who's at fault here? Maybe they're right, maybe we are...

There's a wide misconception amongst 3rd party devs that only games with a nintendo logo on them will sale. If you want significant profit, its how much EFFORT you put in the game, devs make lame stereotypical games on what they think a Nintyendo fan does, and then complain why its not selling.

I don't know this guy, but from what he's said he just sounds like another graphicswhore. Games aren't always about graphics, etc. And I'll stop right there before this turns into a console war =_=
That statement about too much on their plate is bullshit. If they can work on Gears of War for PC and Gears of War 2, then they can certainly sell their engine to Nintendo after Gears of War is released for PC.
