Joycast Podcast 019 - Eating crow edition

This could be the best thing that's happened in a Joystiq Podcast yet. First, we lambaste the idea that Microsoft would ever let Bungie go, then ... well, you can probably guess what happens about midway through. Seriously, you have to listen to this one.

This story makes absolutely no sense.
How can a Bungie, who was bought by Microsoft, now become another company by splitting off from it's owner?
Sounds like the original deal was just an exclusivity deal and Bungie was never really owned, just payed to lock up teh haloz.
arleigh.sandoc @ Oct 5th 2007 5:21PM
Bungie spinning off to become its own company happens all the time in big business especially in the tech industry. Its a parent company's way of keeping the creative group of the division from just up and quitting and going off on their own as past ex-Bungie employees have done in the past. Bungie is its own privately-owned company now but Microsoft has a minority stake in the new company and from the sound of the details of the split Bungie will continue to make exclusive titles for Microsoft. Microsoft also gets ownership control of the Halo IP.
Urza @ Oct 5th 2007 6:30PM
If you read the story, you discover Bungie will still be publishing under Microsoft Game Studios.
Basically, what it means is Bungie will have it's own president, it's own vice president, etc. etc. etc. but is owned by Microsoft.
It's just something Bill Gates owns, but his people don't run it.

If Bungie keeps making Halo4... who cares. There probably wont be another HAlo fps on 360.

Jeeeeez, you guys didn't try very hard with that picture, did ya?
Justin McElroy @ Oct 5th 2007 5:18PM
You're so very right. But, last week, people spent all the comments talking about how delicious the depicted pizza looked. So, it's kind of a damned if you do/damned if you don't sort of situation.
I'll do better next time.

Huh, one of my favorite bands is They Might Be Giants (just saw them here in Seattle last week), and my favorite movie is Princess Bride. That must say something about our personalities.

I think the discussion on the podcast over bungies motives may be a bit too idealistic and a bit too nearsighted. While it is good to assume that bungie is doing this for the creative control, I doubt it is true. It seems to me that the reason for buying the name back and essentially becoming a second party developed is purely financialy motivated. It would be interesting to see how much of this 300 million bungie is losing by not owning the name. Simply enough, they buy it back, create halo4. Even if microsoft doesnt throw so much money in to a sequel (It sold its consoles and services with halo3), they would still make the bank off of the IP alone. Which is very righteous in nature, for them to profit off their own IP.

Just bring on the Halods
Gumbydunzeeto @ Oct 6th 2007 3:32AM
I've recently started listening to your podcast, and I'm enjoying it.
One thing I can't get out of my headis thinking that Justin sounds like Chris(?) (The son) from Family Guy. And so then I imagine Ludwig as Stewie, and Chris as Brian. And then I keep waiting for some extremely off colour comment throughout the podcast.
Just this weird image I have. Anyways, good job.
DaMan09 @ Oct 6th 2007 4:41AM
Aww, come on guys, I was looking forward to all of you singing Avril Lavigne
Mischa @ Oct 6th 2007 9:02AM
I agree with DaMan09. Next podcast, you owe us more Avril Lavigne than Justin gave us.
I just wanted to say that as a listener from episode 1 of this podcast, the quality of the whole show has grown substantially. I think your dynamic is great, however can I make one gripe about prior podcasts? Next time Jem Alexander is on (I think he's the one, the English guy who always sounds really tired), give him some coffee or something. Those interviews with him at TGS and Leipzig were so boring, my brain came to a screeching halt.
That's all. Other than that, great podcast.
Christopher Grant @ Oct 6th 2007 7:57PM
Well, to be fair to Jem he is British (they all sound like that I think ... it's genetic) and it was the middle of the night. Oh yeah, and he's deathly allergic to stimulants.
Actually, I think we all sounded pretty tired. But we were doing for you! The listeners! *pats back*
Mischa @ Oct 6th 2007 8:37PM
Well yeah, I'd imagine with all the rain, and all the demons running around, UK'ers would be pretty tired out all the time. And I certainly appreciate the coverage of both the events (
Mischa @ Oct 6th 2007 8:39PM
Note to self: don't draw hearts in the comments.
The rest of that post is: All I'm saying is poke him with a stick every once in awhile.
Badle @ Oct 8th 2007 11:30AM
I liked the part where you guys said shitty. I laughed at it.
