the thing is, we shouldn't have to pay extra for BC. That feature has always been a required feature of any console so it is understandable that people would be upset by it.

I think part of the fear is that future SKUs, no matter the hard disk size, may also suffer the same fate, and with prices still pretty high it's pretty much a rock and hard place scenario.

I'd like to say that it makes no sense for Sony to take away BC. The PS2 library of titles makes it great reason keep it. So what if there are 65 titles coming out. I could wipe my a$$ with 65 titles and that wouldn't even be a decent fraction compared to PS2 games.

The Xbox 360 didn't need to support it that much because of it's not so large xbox catalog. True there are some great xbox games but not as many the PS2. The PS2 was superior because of its variety of games. The PS3 doesn't even that kind of support yet, so it would be best to keep that feature in the PS3.

I've saw someone earlier commenting on Nintendo/Wii and I have to say that the DVD player feature doesn't really matter since it is obvious that everybody has one and Nintendo has clearly stated this at the beginning. The Wii and DS still has BC for past games and even controllers so nobody can blame Nintendo for much but a few drawbacks that you can live with for a while.

If Sony wants to do this as a permanent route to take then I can no longer support what they do.

Microsoft could benefit from Sony's stupidity and
lose their respect from past consumers.

Sony realized it's mistake with manufacturing its own Graphics Synthesizer and Emotion Engine as it would cause emulation problems later down the road. That is why they asked IBM and Nvidia to handle the Processing for the PS3. If they follow the same sort of way, the Ps4 should ahve absolutely no problem emulating the ps3.

As for the wii's BC with GC, the wii is just a pumped up version of the GC and sadly it offers only marginal level of ps2 graphics, and is likely to lose itself by start of 2009. Take for examply GC games is windows 98, GC is 2.0 Ghz p4 and the wii is a 3.0 ghz p4. The wii can still run its predecessors with no problem. sony never said anything about dropping ps1 BC as it cant due to the games available on the PSN (besides emulating ps1 is very easy with the power of the cell). Sure it's sad to see the ps2 BC go for a while, but some of you said earlier on that Xbox core allows you to upgrade a HDD for BC. Point is that the HDD upgrade runs you about a 100$, so its pretty much the same case with the ps3.

I admit, im a strong sony supporter, but the great games on the 360 have started to persuade me. But i might as well just get both in the end (60 gig and the elite 360). I live in Thailand, and its very sad to see the amount of piracy on wii,ps2,xbox,x360 going around. BC wouldn't make much of a differnece of asians (non Japan) since the PS3 can't play pirated games in the first place.

Some of the Sony fanboys that posted here are jsut starting to get immature with the RROD, sure MS rushed the 360 a bit, but why is it still selling?

And as a final remark, Joystiq being a major gaming news site should really do a bit a of research instead of posting a whole lot of garbage of the 80 gigs and european models completely throwing out the ps2 hardware as it still contains the GS. The Playstation brand's selling point has always been the Backwards compatibilty. Let's just hope Sony manages to push through as emulating the GS's 2560bit architecture is not going to be an easy task.

Actually, the EE and GS were designed by Toshiba with help from Sony, although Sony does manufacture them themelves.

So the EE and GS situation is actually very similar to the Cell and RSX situation where IBM and NVidia created them with help from Sony.

Something important to remember is that the PS2 was not some middle-of-the-road system, it was an absolute juggernaut. BC on the 360 isn't much of an issue because while the Xbox an enjoyable system, there weren't a huge number of games that really stood out as classics (MS fanboys, heel! Just my opinion...)

However, you can't argue that the PS2 wasn't one of the biggest systems ever released, and as such, BC should be an important consideration. Just think about how cherished so many of the old NES and SNES games are. Of all the next-gen systems, it amazes me that the PS3 would be the one to shun it's predecessor that yielded such amazing games.

The point is that Sony offers the PS2 BC for a premium price along with other features such as a bigger HDD and other thigns such as flash card readers. Sony isn't going to put a rest to this, as everyone recognizes the Playstation brand names Core value. The PS2 was the first solid system to offer BC, as discs can be read with just one laser. Emulating one system alone posed as a problem at the time. This time round the ps3 has a big job of actaully emulating 2 systems, one which has pretty good graphics even on today's standards (ps2). Sony cannot keep doing this forever, i suspect an end to Ps2 and PS1 BC once Ps4 hits the shelves.

Sony doesn't want to sell a $400 PS2. And people are stupid buying for such. PS2 BC is their worst competitor. Take for instance, people picking up PS2 version of Nascar 08 or 07 instead of the PS3 version and save $20 plus. Or the PS2's vast library occupying gamer's time till the next big PS3 release. If you can play all your old PS2 titles, then there's no incentitive to build a PS3 library now. Best thing for Sony is to slowly add BC titles to keep people happy. Yes, PS3 is weak.

How come no one is talking about the new 360 sku (the 360 arcade), the one with no backwards compatability iether. how come no one is tearing into microsoft for that? Giving gamers a choice for a cheaper unit even if there is no backwards compatability puts more units out there, which prompts game companies to make more games for the platform. I do agree it's a loss, but I can also understand the need for choice for gamers who are ps2 fans who want to get a ps3, or even someone who is budget minded.

Because, for the millionth time: the core 360 can be updated to have backwards compatibility with the purchase of the hard drive that you can get at any time. The 40 GB PS3 cannot be upgraded to have BC AT ALL. Ever.

I'm talking the arcade here, not the core, the arcade won't have backwards compatability. and that thing with the hard drive? how much is it? $100? the price difference of the PS3 right now? common think these things over. This is all about choice, maybe not everyone cares about the backwards compatability. I don't, I still own a ps2 and it works great. This is about giving consumers a cheaper choice for geting a ps3. not the end all be all of the ps3. if you care so much about your backwards compatability go buy the more expensive model that's why it's there.

You sir are an idiot. The Xbox 360 Arcade is just a CORE renamed something fun. With a 256MB Memory Unit and 5 Arcade games. Throw a hard drive on there and (SHOCKERS) Xbox BC is there! That's the ONLY thing preventing the Core/Arcade from Being BC.

I vote for moving all PS1 & PS2 titles in GROUPED VOLUMES on blu-ray! Who wants to always change out discs when playing say...FF7 , metal gear, ect. I have 40+ titles for PS1 but all are NTSC & my PS3 is a PAL machine.(American that has moved to Europe years ago) anyway I agree with some to JUST BUY ALL consoles that appeal to you ;-) I have almost every console that has come out (except for the neo-geo)from pong to atari2600 to coleco to intellivision to sega to PS & xbox and most all of them still work! games are for having FUN anyways! ENJOY

You PS3 owners ought to be happy with that. You know Sony is going to offer backward compatibility as a download seeing it has a hard drive and a network service that provides these types of updates on a monthly basis.

You could be in worse situation, instead of Sony being your company, you could have SEGA be your company have ZERO backward compatibility.
Yeah Sega sucked when it came to backward compatibility they went from Sega CD to Saturn to Dreamcast and neither new generation offered backward compatibility.
Sony pioneered the idea and they know its what make their system sell.

To the person that said the cheapest Xbox 360 lacks compatiblity, that true. But it can be easily added and those 20GB HDD aren't that expensive if you get them off ebay. I seen the 20GB on ebay as cheap as $10 dollars since those 120GB HDD have come out.

What Sony should have done? What Sony NEEDED to do? Region-Free backwards compatibility and a truly universal USB peripherals adapter for all those non-Sony controllers.

What Sony actually DID do? Neuter the PS3. An extensive library of 65 titles. I'm sorry, Lair was horrible.

I'm glad my PS3 at least still has it's balls attached. There are some amazing PS2 games coming out this winter that I'm going to want to play.

This "next generation" of gaming consoles SUCKS.

Sony keeps making seriously questionable [as in BAD] business decisions, has next to no game library [in the US at least] and costs a fortune for a console. Microsoft's 360 has the games but comes along with an unacceptable failure rate.

First everyone complains how expensive PS3 is and then when they Sony does something to lower the price, everyone is still complaining. Now,I admit that eliminating $27 worth of chips on a machine that is $300 overpriced and eliminating a feature that gamers actually want may not be the way to go, but at least they are responding. I am still of the opinion that Blu Ray and Cell were bad choices. They are the two most expensive components along with the special RAM required by the Cell. If they want to make a mainstream machine that people can actually afford, those are the areas that need to be looked into for substantial price cuts.

I think what Joystiq is forgetting is that the PS2 is not going away. Sony is still selling the PS2 console, in great numbers, especially overseas. They are not only cheap but generate a HUGE profit for Sony. They still sell as many PS2s as Nintendo sells Wii's, and they have an established base of MILLIONS. Recently, Sony redesigned the PS2 slim to make it 40% LIGHTER, reducing bulk shipping charges.

They have no plan to stop selling the PS2, with associated memory cards, rumble controllers, steering wheels, etc. It looks just as good playing PS2 games on a HDTV as a PS3 does.

Also, by continuing to sell PS2s cheap, they are cuttin the legs out from the PS2 resell market.

Overall, I think they WANT you to buy a PS2, or keep the one you have. Sure, get a PS3 for that HDTV setup, but put the PS2 in the kids room.

Geez, is it me, or is Sony make this WAY more complicated than it should be. Fans may still own games from PS1 and PS2. Make sure they work as intended. Should be easy, right? How many different gig versions of the PS3 have, or are, out now? People have no idea what to buy. People do, however, just know that whatever version they do buy it'll be expensive.

"If" this turns out to be a trend of SONY's and they eventually remove BC from all new PS3's...there is no way in hell I would even think of buying the console. It's almost as if SONY has a stupid idea machine, and they feel the need to fire it up at least once a month. "Let's see how big of a hole we can shoot in our foot this time."

Eh, I don't see the issue with having a choice between BC and no BC, as long as they keep a BC model available. If they were to drop all BC consoles, that might start being an issue, but I really don't see them doing that.
