Ummm...

"...apparently legitimate..."

It is legit. It aired multiple times on CBS during college football games.

Yeah, that's where I caught it, during college football. I laughed my @ss off when I saw it, called my bro (who is a big WoW fan) and emailed Joystiq. Strangely, my girlfriend didn't seem to care.

The person who wrote this is a blogger for video game sites. I mean we could make stereotypical joke after stereotypical joke about why they would not be watching any football games. Then we could bring up halo, and how anyone who saw these commercials, must play halo, cuz people who play halo, are football jocks etc... The vicious cycle continues.

I know it's not a god awful PvP video, but somehow any WoW video lacking a Rammstein soundtrack seems wrong.

very few wow players are the typs of people that would buy trucks, and very very few truck owners would like to be associated with a game

Oh thanks for stereotyping people who buy trucks as not tech savvy. I'm not a trucker owner, by the way.

As I previously mention, those commercials were aired during college football games. College students don't play video games?

i agree.
most WoW players own 87' Toyota Corollas that they bought off their mom(the same mom who's basement they live in, interestingly enough) Color: rusted off brown.

Typically truck owners are the following:
1.Think they are cowboys, a truck is todays version of a horse.
2.A construction worker/contractor/landscaper.
3.Lives in Texas.

So what, blooh? Do you actually conduct a poll/research on your workspace? Did you study the buying habits of your co-workers. You're basing people's buying habits on your life. The world doesn't revolve around you. People in San Francisco probably don't follow the same lifestyles say Oklahoma City.

I know truck owners that are gamers. It doesn't mean my thinking is that the majority of truck owners are gamers. However, data shows truck owners tend to be young males. Young males tend to watch football and play video/computer games. (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0DE1DB1631F933A15757C0A9639C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=print)

In my opinion which probably be obvious by now, I think Toyota hit the nail on this. If you visit video game (i.e, Joystiq, Blizzard's forums) and "geek" websites (i.e., Digg) forums, it is popular. In fact, the commercial is currently on the most played videos in Youtube. (http://youtube.com/browse?s=mp)

By the way, I have a bachelor's degree in marketing but I'm no way an expert and not planning to expand my knowledge on the field i.e., going to graduate business school. No way even close to be affiliated with Toyota or the people who made the ad.

That's the point, blooh. They are marketing to a new segment. That's what good advertising seeks to do; attract new customers.

If it wasn't for the graphics quality of World of warcraft it would've been one awesome commercial anyway I agree with blooh well not entirely.

Yes is true that people in the construction business are the most likely to buy a truck but that doesn't mean they don't use computers or that they don't know about the game or that their kids, sons or daughters haven’t told them about the game but is true gamers aren’t the kind of people that would buy a truck maybe a family car,a van or a medium sized car since trucks are mostly for work and only for certain jobs since I don’t think an accountant would ever need a truck.

If you ask me the only contradiction to reality in that ad is that the elf girl is really a girl :/

I drive a truck. I play games more than most people I know that don't drive a truck. Lots of the pizza delivery guys at my work drive trucks, and most of them play games a lot too.

It's legit, I work at the company that made it. The commercial was done by visual effects studio Hydraulx ( http://www.hydraulx.com/ ).

I wish I could remember the ad agency, or which 3d artists worked on it (there were only a few!). All I can remember right now is that it was supervised by Ed Chapman (can't find an imdb, I've possibly misspelled it), and the 2d compositing work was done by Jeff Heusser ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0381899/ ) with coordinating work done by John Polyson (no imdb)

These guys all did a great job.. I'll see if I can get more information and clearence to post more about it and the making of.

i think it seems that they are just reaching out to different people with there ad's. seems odd that you would label everyone that plays wow as not a target market. i am sure there are some that like it.

Hey Shidarin, pass on the word: That commercial rocks and everyone else at joystiq just likes to complain.

I'd like to see it wrapped with the toyota blurbs though, just the video portion is too short for the idea to sink in.

Reminded me of South Park, but at least it isn't yet another ad demonstrating real world situations like towing a two-ton shipping container up a cliff.

"My truck can carry a Boeing jet engine! It never will, but the knowledge that it could sure helps me forget about my tiny dick. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Wal-Mart."

A truck may not have been the best thing to target at WoW players (think smaller and cheaper) but it's a funny commercial none the less.

Yeah, because WoW players obviously don't have any expendable income, and many of them certainly don't care about having cool-looking huge gear that's ultimately impractical.

I own both a truck and videogames. Did I just blow your freaking mind?

Disclosure - I own a 360 and Halo, which would disqualify me as a true gamer to some here, but I also think the Dreamcast is the best system ever. Now we're back to square one. I guess the fact that I'm on this site and not autoblog tells you where I stand.

I own a 07 tacoma and don't work in the construction field, in fact anyone who buys a tacoma for work in the construction industry is an idiot. The beds conposite so you can't get haul much back there so in reality a nerdy WoW player would be a great target market for a reg cab four banger with a sticker price below 15k.There isn't much out there that's cheaper including toyotas youth based scion brand.

the point is that the toyota tacoma is so good that it can kill a dragon.
