Joystiq interview: Spider-Man: Friend or Foe producer Jamie Bafus

A lot of people were confused when they saw Spider-Man: Friend or Foe announced so soon after Spider-Man 3. Can you tell us a little bit about the inception of the game, the vision for setting it apart from the movie games?
The previous movie-based Spider-Man games were rated "T" which left out the huge base of younger Spider-Man fans. With Spider-Man: Friend or Foe we set out to make a Spider-Man game that was not only suitable for kids but also fun for gamers of all ages.
When we were thinking of how to best create a family-friendly Spider-Man game, we liked the idea of combining all three movies together in one game, but we also had a concept for a team-up game which would have made it really difficult to follow the Spider-Man movie plots. So, we decided to pay homage to the movies in, what we think, are really fun ways and create something unique with the team-up aspect that we feel fans of all ages will want to play.

The animated style is a little bit closer to a cartoon version of Spidey, would you say the game is aimed more at children?
With Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, we wanted to do something really unique with the brand – something that had a very accessible feel and appealed to a younger audience. We chose an art style that we felt matched the style of combat – light and playful – and it translated well to all of the console and handheld platforms.
There are so many different abilities Spider-Man has had over the years, how did you settle on a move set for the game?
We wanted the focus in Spider-Man: Friend or Foe to be on combat and the fun things Spider-Man can do with his webs. So, we looked at his various web abilities and what he's done over the years and started from there. The team listed out the various types of moves and web attacks we would want to do. Then we narrowed it down by what would be the most fun for this type of gameplay, what would look the coolest and match our art style and what would work well with another character fighting along side Spidey.
This is the first time a lot of these characters have been playable in a game, were any of them easier or more difficult to fit into a video game than others?
Most definitely! There is a long list of characters that have appeared in the Spider-Man universe over the years and narrowing it down to the ones that would be the most fun and interesting to play was tough. When the team was deciding, we all had our personal favorites and there were several that were no-brainers to include. We looked at the dozens of known and more obscure characters and narrowed the list by who had the most interesting powers to work with. We also wanted to throw in a few characters that hadn't been seen in games before, let alone played. After a lot of back and forth and searching through comics and websites, we ended up with the final Spider-Man: Friend or Foe lineup.
The game seems to have a similar feel to some of the Spider-Man comics of the 60s. Were those an inspiration?
Both the old comics, as well as the various cartoons, were huge influences when we were creating Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. The art team really wanted to blend the old school look with the more modern art styles and I think we found a style that does that well – the game gives a little nostalgia for the older fans, yet still has the current "Saturday morning" feel.
Is the plan to continue Friend or Foe as a separate franchise?
You'll have to stay tuned...I'm not at liberty to say!

NDF ASSEMBLE!!!
Guys, due to numerous commitments in my ever-hectic life (stop laughing, seriously: university, work, house, new season of Top Gear etc) I TEMPORARIILY step-down from the field-leader position of the NDF- Joystiq Branch.
I, in my limitless power, hand commanding responsibilities to Fernando Rocker. Fernando will be seconded by Hvnlysoldr and Nintendo Fanbot jointly.
I will retain my Earth Ning and the Keys to the Black Lion.
My absence is temporary and I will resume full-time position as and when my shcedule allows. I will still be a part of the NDF, and pop in from time to time to make sure the defending is going well.
If you need my help just call me three times in your mind. Should your telepathic powers fail, tough. Please forward all queries to (e-mail address withheld for fear of spammers).

That's just a whole different kettle of fish.
I wish it were still that simple as to pay the damned bill.

Wah Wah What! I'm not sure I can be second since I can only check the sites when I wake up and before bed now.
I've only had two Spider-Man games for the Genesis although I've played a demo of Spider-Man movie. Otherwise: Issue a Beige Alert. If I don't survive tell my wife Hello.
jonathan @ Oct 8th 2007 4:15PM
Weakest, more disappointing questions ever.
Wow. You might as well of just copied and pasted the description of the game on the back of the case. This is pure, positive generic questions and answers.
How about, "Was Lego Star Wars as much of an inspiration for the game as is speculated? Why can't we websling? Why are you giving us PSP graphics on an Xbox 360?"
Yuccadude @ Oct 8th 2007 4:14PM
Didn't know that Spider-man shot lightning. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I go on a crime spree in New York City.

Who can forget "Fun Thing Spidey Can Do with His Webbing #27: Confetti!"? It's devastating... at birthday parties.

In this game spiderman has arachnid dysfunction
J-Guy @ Oct 8th 2007 6:20PM
I knew it! Spiderman is a Sith Lord!
Freeze @ Oct 8th 2007 4:43PM
Ok, after the game sucks bad in bringing in the dough for both companies, Marvel can go ahead and re-issue the license back to Capcom to get started work on Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
Rick @ Oct 8th 2007 5:01PM
This game actually beats out Hour of Victory as shittiest game demo I've ever played. I thought that distinction would hold a little bit longer than this, to be honest.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 8th 2007 5:03PM
Why you f*ing people say this game sucks? It plays like Marvel ultimate alliance or Xmen legends but simplified, instead of 4 characters you control 2 and so on but is the same damn formula just watered down.
Now the real problem is the lazy porting, for the PSP looks great, for the PS2 looks decent same for the Wii but for the x360 looks poor not to mention that it has the PSP control scheme, at least try to make the fact that you port to the XB360 less obvious.
Now It doesn’t sucks and you people can go to hell but they should release it at 30$ for the XB360.Well Spiderman:FoF see ya when you hit the bargain bin but is still cool for the PSP nonetheless.
Jonathan @ Oct 8th 2007 5:53PM
You answered your own question. It's to simplified, to watered down...visually and game play wise.
Jigsaw @ Oct 8th 2007 6:03PM
MUA and the X-Men Legends games sucked too, that's why.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 8th 2007 7:41PM
@ Jigsaw
Lies,LIES!!!
Well yeah is a nerfed Xmen legends but that isn't necessarily bad, makes the game easier to pick up and play which is great for the PSP but well I’m not going to say it sucks for the XB360 because I liked it there but I could just buy it for the PSP, import some cables from Japan and play it on my HDTV and anywhere anytime which would be better than paying for lame XB360 port, too bad because I would like to get those achievements.
Ska Oreo @ Oct 8th 2007 11:30PM
agreed too. It doesn't suck, and is a pretty decent game.
And why can't Spidey webcrawl/swing: BECAUSE IT'S A FUCKING SIDECROLLER DIPSHITS!!
WiNG @ Oct 8th 2007 5:26PM
Tried this game but
I didn't know how to shot web
Geist @ Oct 8th 2007 6:07PM
How I shot web?

Ahh....this is a pretty bad game.
the_game_master @ Oct 8th 2007 5:53PM
I downloaded this game on LIVE on the morning Halo 3 launched, best Spiderman game I played since the old Amazing Spiderman game I played on Sega CD.
This is on my wishlist for purchase this month, but I'll be waiting till VF5 come out this month before I had to the store and buy new games.
Geist @ Oct 8th 2007 6:14PM
What? This game? The best? Question mark?
Yours is the first positive remark about it I've heard. Spiderman 2 is better, I feel.
the_game_master @ Oct 8th 2007 6:35PM
Yeah I don't know why people are giving this game a bad rap. Its really fun when you play it. I think probably because the graphics aren't photo-realistic as I seen a lot of neysayers say as their defense in their attack against this game, which is sort of ludacris considering Spiderman is a comic not a real life person and I think this game sticks true to comic fashion which I like.
Jonathan @ Oct 8th 2007 7:38PM
Whoa. Someone hasn't played the Spiderman adventure games on PS1. CLearly the best Spiderman game ever.
Ska Oreo @ Oct 8th 2007 11:32PM
It's defiantly not the best Spiderman game I've ever played (that honor goes to Spiderman 64) but it's not that bad. People seem to forget that this is mainly targeted for the kiddies. But for what it is, it isn't bad.
Rick @ Oct 8th 2007 10:28PM
No, it's not an incredibly bad game because of the graphics (although, incidentally, they do suck donkey balls). IT'S BECAUSE THE GAMEPLAY AND CHARACTER CONTROL IS FUCKING AWFUL. Woohoo, it's 2007 and I can't even move the camera around? Thanks for nothing. I'm playing as Spider Man and I can't shoot a web and swing around? Wow, that's lame. The enemy AI is almost non-existent. There's no real benefit to playing as either character (at least, in the demo). The story is weak (well, sorry, but how many comic book stories are actually strong?). Overall, it just sucks and plays like an Super NES-era game. It's just bad. Accept the sad truth and move on.
Ska Oreo @ Oct 8th 2007 11:36PM
"I'm playing as Spider Man and I can't shoot a web and swing around?"
umm what? I'm pretty sure what I was shooting at those damned robots were webs, and I'm pretty sure (though I don't know how I did it) I was able to swing from side to side.
To those expecting the same type of gameplay from the Spiderman movie games, you are seriously kidding yourself. FOE is a simplified beat-em-up game made for the kiddies. And for what it is, it isn't a bad game.
Also about your comic book story statement, I'm sure there are million of comic book fans(including myself) who would love to disagree with you.
t_m @ Oct 9th 2007 2:42AM
Seems like a mix between this game, and the spiderman 3 game, would rock on the wii.
the swinging controls were great on the last wii spiderman game... but everything else sucked. Moving to a more cartoony artstyle, simplifying the combat, and adding new characters with distinctive move sets (doc oc, etc..) would be a pretty cool game.
But i can't believe they took out the swinging! That was the best bit by far!!
The ZeroCorpse @ Oct 9th 2007 2:20PM
Boring, repetitive beat-em-up with a ridiculous plot and awful control. Marvel Ultimate Alliance wipes it's ass with this game.
