According to The Hollywood Reporter, an "industry source" of theirs says the North American 40GB PS3 model will release on Nov. 2 at $399. Another source reveals Sony has been asking stores to try and clear out existing PS3 inventory by the November date. Just like the controversial European 40GB PS3 model, the North American model will also allegedly not be backwards compatible with the PS2.
Now that it looks like the NA 40GB PS3 will have the same issues as its Euro counterpart, we can't wait to hear Sony America's rationale on this, considering the European explanation was a bit lacking. Aeropause had a strong piece this weekend on their issues about this new PS3. They said, "So why is this the worst idea to ever come from Sony? Because it basically brings the PlayStation 3 back to its absolute zero starting point with its biggest unserved fan base -- the PS2 owners who have held out because of price ... It's no longer an 'upgrade' or a 'replacement' for the PS2, giving them pride in their brand loyalty, it's a brand new machine that stands alone and doesn't replace anything at all." Now we wait for the official announcement from Sony America and watch how they'll craft the message that gamers should focus on the "65 titles" for the PS3.

At first when I heard about the 40GB system, I was excited cause Sony was finally going to support regular consumers. But when I heard it had NO BC, I was really confused about it. Now, that I had time to think about it...To me, Its only a big deal because SONY has always made BC a big deal. M$ never mentioned BC as a "selling point" so thats why people dont really care about the 360 NOT keeping up w/ BC. Honestly, I've only used my BC on my PS3 a couple times but the main reason I bought the 60GB was to PLAY PS3 GAMES. Its good that Sony has released a cheaper SKU. I guess they wanna give people a choice: cheaper SKU or High-End SKU. Even if they said BC wont come as DLC, we all know Sony is full of it. They didnt even confirm the 60GB "clearance sell" until the week after the prices started dropping, BC DLC may come eventually. Maybe Sony knows what they're doing. There are a lot of games I'm interested in later on this year and so maybe Sony has a plan along. Only time will tell....
Also, can you people get off the "PS3 has no games" thing. Its getting old. It hasnt a been a year yet. Give it time. I dont any console that had a games gallore in the first year. Be fair!
Everybody be easy!

The Nintendo Wii? Before Christmas, it'll have Zelda: Twilight Princess, Excite Truck, Trauma Center, Metroid Prime 3, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart, if I remember correctly. And those are only the games I've played and enjoyed/am looking forward to.

We need to dig up those posts that said the PS3 wouldn't see a price drop to $399 for at least 5 years.
And the article where Sony rips on Microsoft for having to many versions of the 360, which confuse the customer.
And the article where Sony rips on Microsoft for having shoddy backwards compatibility.

according to the guy who works at the game store across the street, they're getting a $399, 40gig PS3 on November 2.
when he told me, i just assumed that there had been an announcement. i guess there hasn't been, so i'll just take this story, the numerous other stories, and more importantly, confirmation from the guy at the gaming store, as it being fact.
doesn't matter to me, personally, as i already have a Playstation 3, but the $400 price should help with those that couldn't, or wouldn't, get it at the $500/$600 prices.

They do work. Otherwise I wouldn't have an HDMI port on my 20GB PS3 and I wouldn't of been able to get a Big Daddy Figure with Bioshock.
