I'll pronounce his name right, when he directs a video game movie right and without making a cheesy line like "Let the games begin" or some other cringe worthy comment.

Is it an American phenomenon to be so uncultured that you can't even begin to pronounce foreign names? I've known a couple Uwes, but even if I hadn't, the fact that the name is Germanic should give some clues as to how it's pronounced.

Do recall that to the average American, Europe is pretty far away. I happen to live in an area with a heavy Germanic influence so I caught that originally, but it isn't so unreasonable for most of us to not know. It's not our fault that the media corporations and our schools don't feel that we need to learn about Europe past the fact that we originated there.

Jerk Face, may I compliment you on such a well thought out reply? I'll admit I was being a little inflammatory with my original post, although I do stand by it. I should have qualified that I'm sure there are Americans who got it, and likely more Canadians than I'd like to admit who didn't.

If mispronounciation is a sign of cultural ignorance, then by your logic almost every non-native-english-speaking Japanese person I've ever met must be culturally ignorant because of the L-R linguistic gap.

There's a large difference between cultural ignorance and a simple accent influenced by the native tongue. Don't confuse the two simply for the sake of prejudicial cheap shot.

Joop, if I may say, there is a difference between an accent and ignorance of other languages. Please don't confuse the two.

It isn't a "phenomenon," it's a matter of necessity.

Most Americans are not going to meet someone named "Uwe," so it's never important for them to learn how it's pronounced. Likewise, it isn't necessesary to learn the pronunciation rules of another language, as it isn't likely to be relevant to them.

It never gets old seeing someone from Europe tell us American's what idiots we are. It must be great to sit on that throne of yours.

All cultures have some element of ignorance to cultures other than their own. We, and you, are not special in that respect.

Uh, Jerf Face, not every American came from Europe. I happen to be of Puerto Rican decent.

So Viridium, someone had to tell me how to pronounce his (Uwe's) name because i have never seen or heard that name written or spoken before. So how does that make me culturally ignorant? I even spent 20 days in Germany and picked up a little german, but I never heard that name. And even if I did hear it, I never would have thought it was spelled Uwe.

Actually, a comment like yours screams of ignorance.

To call someone with no hispanic exposure "culturally ignorant" because they thought pollo was pronounced like polo is completely niave. They could be aware of the culture but not of the language. Two COMPLETELY different things.

So I say to you, keep your ignorant comments to yourself and don't post your hate for the world to see. Americans, if that is truly what you are, such as yourself give the rest of us a bad name.

Go back to Germany you hate monger!

So who is going to tell us how to say their name correctly next week? I would say Peter Molyneux but I have heard him say it himself already and most people say it correctly.

Hey I know it should be Cabel Sasser (http://www.cabel.name) of Buggy Saints Row fame. I have heard people refer to him as Cable Sasser plenty of times.
