Meet the 'black Scottish cyclops' Demoman of Team Fortress 2
It's not hard to come to the conclusion that The Orange Box is probably the best value in gaming this holiday, especially if you never played Half-Life 2 or are a pure console player. So keep goofing around Valve, give us more character profiles even after The Orange Box comes out stuffed with Half-Life 2, Episodes 1 and 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2. The citrusy goodness starts tomorrow for PC and Xbox 360 -- PS3 needs a little longer to ripen.

I'm so glad that Joystiq is giving TF2 the love. What a great, great, game.
It's been pointed out before, but the Team Fortress series is great because you can get into it, have fun, and contribute to your team's successs even if you suck at shooters.
There are a number of strategy, stealth, and support roles that you can play without moving a reticule around with your right stick. And the game is very well balanced, and hilarious to boot.

i love these videos
fawazr @ Oct 9th 2007 12:35PM
Are there really any black Scottish people? I remember the dude fro Thin Lizzy, but he was Irish.
FOXHOUND @ Oct 9th 2007 12:42PM
I thought they were poking fun at Samuel L Jackson's role in that Formula 51, but I think he was a kilt wearing American if I remember that movie correctly...
Vigi @ Oct 9th 2007 1:42PM
I don't know, but there's Chinese-Irish people.

I knew a guy of chinese descent that was born and raised in Jamaica. The first time we met I thought it was just some chinese dude but when he started talking, I was like WTF? He told me he gets that all the time being of a chinese descent but with a heavy Jamaican accent.
fawazr @ Oct 9th 2007 2:36PM
Yeah, their are plenty of Chinese people in Jamaica. It's actually a pretty diverse place, but Scottland?
Zertoss @ Oct 9th 2007 12:36PM
They're gonna need glue to put you back together... IN HELL!
anone25 @ Oct 9th 2007 1:39PM
Why do we always get reminded of the 'value' of the product with every post about the orange box. How about something that involves, say, the controls of the game? Or how about getting in Newell's face for him to explain his definition of the word 'episodic' and what kind of time frame that should typically entail.
WiNG @ Oct 9th 2007 1:41PM
This game has excellent controls. They are simple and intuitive. The PC version allows all the key binding you've come to expect in Valve games. Is that enough for you?
James @ Oct 9th 2007 1:49PM
I have a feeling it never will be.
ZekeSulastin @ Oct 9th 2007 2:02PM
I *DO* wish people would stop going on about how great it is that you can give your extra licenses to your friends. It's not. I got introduced to HL2 by the same people who would be interested in playing it, free or not. And lo and behold, they already have HL2!
Valve just found a great way to take extra money, either from people purchasing individual parts or by selling people stuff they already own rather than providing a discount based on the games already in your account. GG Valve.
LaughingTarget @ Oct 9th 2007 6:25PM
Think of it as Episode 2, which would have been given a $30 price tag (just like Episode 1 was) and givne TF2 and Portal, Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 for $15. It is a deal.
TF2 and Portal alone may even be worth that extra $15.
robert borrego @ Oct 9th 2007 1:13PM
They need to make a movie or something with these guys. They are such good characters.
Ted @ Oct 9th 2007 1:01PM
'Prancing about with your heads full of eyeballs'
LMAO!!!
I love these videos! They flesh out the characters so much and make want to play more TF2 even though I just finished a 1hr session a minute ago. :D
WiNG @ Oct 9th 2007 1:10PM
TF2 is a great great game, and anyone who has not played it should know this:
1. The comedy carries over into the acutal gameplay.
2. The graphics shown in the video and most of the audio is straight from the game. Yes, it looks that good (on PC at least)
3. You can play this game in so many ways due to the classes, it's insane.
So to all the HALOZ players out there, won't you consider buying a GOOD fps this time around?
FOXHOUND @ Oct 9th 2007 1:14PM
"So to all the HALOZ players out there, won't you consider buying a GOOD fps this time around?"
LOL I love the ending to your comment. It sounds like a PSA or something to turn HALO'heads toward TF2. XD
"Because a keyboard & mouse are a terrible set to waste."
Jake @ Oct 9th 2007 2:02PM
Halo is a good shooter too. Most people with a 360 that play both will prefer Halo 3 over the multiplayer of TF2. The gameplay of the two are so different that you can't just call one good and one crappy.
On PC, you don't have the option of Halo 3 so it is natural to want to believe the one you don't get sucks while the one you do get rocks. On the 360, consumers will have the choice and they will choose more commonly the one they have more fun playing. I am buying both, but I am doubting I'll want to play TF2 as much as Halo 3. Perhaps TF2 will surprise me.
I am surprised Valve hasn't released a TF demo, actually. It seems like the perfect type of game to get people hooked on using a demo. Same with Portal and Half Life 2 for that matter. The games are obviously good, so why hide them from a free trial on 360?
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 9th 2007 2:37PM
As a Halo 3 player I must say Bite me Wing,Halo 3 multiplayer is awesome too bad punks drag it down also who said Halo 3 players aren't going to play Team Fortress 2 too, multiplatform FTW.
Well In my case I just want to play portal,Revisit the glorious Half life universe and play Team Fortress 2 but after I get all the Halo 3 achievements.
fawazr @ Oct 9th 2007 2:43PM
@Jake
Good point. It's also important to remember that many Halo fans didn't grow up using WASD/mouse to play an FPS, so as far as they're concerned the stiff sensitivity of an analog controller far outweighs the sensitivity of a mouse. And even though there are Halo games for the PC, the one for the 360 has a "3" on the end and that makes a WORLD of difference.
Poisoned Al @ Oct 9th 2007 4:05PM
TF2 and Halo 3 are two totally different MP games and both are good. You should get both. I did.
Matt B @ Oct 9th 2007 1:12PM

Obie @ Oct 9th 2007 1:14PM
Black, Scottish cyclops....priceless.
billychaos @ Oct 9th 2007 1:17PM
To all those with racial questions. Yes there you can be black irish. If you are born and raised in Ireland you are Irish. If you want to be categorical like america you'd be called African-Irish. My point is, anyong raised in Ireland will be Irish, accent and all. Your nationality is based on your orgin of birth, not color. My last name is Connor, which use to be O'Connor till it was changed a few generations ago, and yes I'm black.
ill trooper @ Oct 9th 2007 1:54PM
Good points. Also, the term 'black Irish' traditionally refers to dark hair color and eyes, not describing skin color or tone.
Tipsy @ Oct 9th 2007 3:09PM
"I'm a grim bloodly fable with a bloody unhappy ending."
LaughingTarget @ Oct 9th 2007 3:55PM
That quote confused me a bit. Grimm tales generally don't have happy endings, at least the ones that weren't edited beyond all recognition as modern fairy tales.
However, I do love his cursing episode. It drew you to believe he was cursing out everyone for being white but turns it around and bitches about how everyone has two eyes. Classic comedy.
WiNG @ Oct 9th 2007 1:22PM
At first when I saw a picture of him I thought it was racist they made him an alcoholic.
But after playing the game it's obvious he's an alcoholic because he's a Scott. And making fun of Scotts is A-Okay!!!!
and also yes playing Demoman is that fun.
Zsavior @ Oct 9th 2007 4:29PM
LMAO I C Wut U did ther WiNG /salute!
James @ Oct 9th 2007 1:32PM
I don't know what accent he's supposed to have, it sure aint Scottish.
(ps. the game rules, but why can't American based media never get non-American accents? I look at you, Heroes and TF2)
leland @ Oct 9th 2007 1:38PM
sadly valve wussed out and changed the demoman's pipebombs so that they no longer explode on contact after a bounce. Used to own with this guy until they changed that about a week ago.
WiNG @ Oct 9th 2007 1:40PM
It also made the Demo too good at offense, instead of on Defense, as he's listed. Now it's a lot more reasonable vs players, and you can still own Sentries with grenade launchers, or people with stickies.
Hell stickies destroy everything.
Poisoned Al @ Oct 9th 2007 4:10PM
Yeah, he was too strong before but he's been a bit nerfed. It's hard to defend yourself now. However, nothing brings a smile to my face more then hearing:
"The enemy has taken our inelegance!"
*click* *B-A-M!*
"The enemy has dropped our inelegance!"
Poisoned Al @ Oct 9th 2007 4:35PM
Oh, and I just want to add, I HATE spell checkers.
Einhanderkiller @ Oct 9th 2007 6:36PM
Learn how to use stickies.
Jake @ Oct 9th 2007 2:06PM
How about a demo for TF2, HL:2, and Portal on LIVE. Us consolers want to buy the product, but we need to be convinced that this isn't a terrible game like Half Life 2 on Xbox apparently was.
We all know how great TF2 and Half Life are. We'd like to give them a whirl. But these games have a history of being ported to suckage.
ScreamingSkull @ Oct 9th 2007 2:23PM
This. Though from all that extra dev time it'd better not suck, since I already pretty much beat HL:2 on my pc years ago.
zkey14 @ Oct 9th 2007 2:26PM
The Medic and HWG's expression as they're charging the D-man.
Oh,god.
Poisoned Al @ Oct 9th 2007 4:41PM
And the best bit is, you'll see that in the game. No Killzone fakeary here :D
Knoxximus @ Oct 9th 2007 2:26PM
I'm Black, French, Irish, and Native American...so in reality, you can be a lot of things.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 9th 2007 2:42PM
Like a fat black Japannese guy that is also a vegetarian and Jewish?
rivaldi22 @ Oct 9th 2007 2:26PM
I swear, on the dusty breath of my grandfather, that that the single-malt better be a goddamn in-game item.
WiNG @ Oct 9th 2007 3:01PM
It's your melee weapon. And if you smack it hard enough against someone's skull, or some metal, it cracks open for MASSIVE DAMAGE.
Poisoned Al @ Oct 9th 2007 4:39PM
Yeah, that broken bottle is f**king LETHAL. It's to make up for that fact he hasn't got a pistol or shotgun.
Also I LOVE the idea you have to break it first.
Godmil @ Oct 9th 2007 2:30PM
He's Scottish? I pressumed from his ingame voice that he was French. Every time I see one of these videos it just makes me want to play that character more. Can't wait to see what they do with the Pyro.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 9th 2007 2:39PM
Is official I want to play as the Mad Black scotish cyclops Demoman in the orange Box.
Man I can't wait to see the Docotor, the spy and the Pyro.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 9th 2007 2:39PM
Dammit I meant Doctor.
ronald.raygun @ Oct 9th 2007 2:48PM
hilarious, these videos are great.
just like morgan freeman's character from shawshank redemption being named 'red'.
Alan @ Oct 9th 2007 3:12PM
These videos are amazing. The demoman has my top playtime so far I believe.
chispito @ Oct 9th 2007 4:04PM
The Demoman is actually the class I have the hardest time with because he is so defensive in nature. It's frustrating to suck so bad at a class that kills you so much.
And for those who haven't bought it yet, the game really does look about as good as this trailer. The animation, particularly the facial animation, is Hollywood (or should I say Silicon Valley) quality.
