Sony Computer Entertainment America is currently developing seven original titles for the PSP, due out next year via download through the PlayStation Store.
According to sources speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, the first-party septet encompass three action games, two music-based games, one shooter and one racer (where does Calling All Cars fit into that list?). They will be approximately one-half to one-third the size of current UMD disks and are intended to provide two to ten hours of gameplay.
Sony is also reportedly courting developers to provide more original titles to the network. No other details are currently available. The PlayStation Store, currently only accessible via the PS3, will be available through the PC and PSP next year.

I'm a big proponent of digital delivery, and I think it's got a bright future on home consoles. Going to retail for every single game - including a previous visit planned weeks in advance to make a preorder - is such a pain. I hope the games are worthwhile and prove the system works.
On that note, I wonder when we'll start seeing downloadable content from the Wii/Nintendo WFC that is sent to the DS?

You raise a good point, but there are a couple ways they can do it:
1) The DS has proven that game demos can fit on the system's memory, so providing demo downloads shouldn't be a problem.
2) Larger games/content could work by streaming data from the console to the handheld.

What would stop Nintendo from releasing a memory card for downloadable titles? The homebrew community has been doing it.

The very same thing that would stop Nintendo from releasing the protection deals in the Wii. You applaud and support a small community, but you also invite pirates in scores. And this is Nintendo we're talking about. The company that thought they lost over $78 million to piracy on Gamecube....

I don't think a handful of original titles is as valuable as courting the community of development shops out there.
XBLA is a juggernaut thanks to all the great development shops under their wing.

Sorry but PSN titles currently available are already on-par or above XBLA games.
Now the multiplayer community is another story. PSN still has a way to go before it has the community part down.

Agreed. Live Arcade is mostly a wash. Everytime I swipe demos, I feel like I'm on Yahoo Games or something. There are a couple examples that stand above the rest but most of it is bad.
Meanwhile PSN has dropped about a 50/50 percentage of good vs bad games.

One feature I'd like to see Sony implement, since I think downloadable games will be a tad bit too big for the PSP, is if you could download the games from your PS3 and save it to your HDD. Then go through remote play and play the games through that.
I just think it's a better solution than buying a memory stick that costs one BILLION DOLLARS!

I have a feeling this is the beginning of a trend for the PSP. Slowly more and more smaller titles will begin to go the purely digital route. I am definitely excited about the possibilities.
