PS3 Monster Hunter 3 cut due to high dev costs

Last night, Nintendo confirmed that Monster Hunter 3 is coming to the Wii. Capcom's uber-popular title was previously known to be a PlayStation 3 title, so what came of that project? According to Capcom, that version is gone.

"Due to high development cost of titles for PS3, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 3 title," said Capcom's Katsuhiko Ichii in a report from Thompson Financial News (via Gamasutra).

Though the series has not enjoyed as much popularity here, Monster Hunter is a highly successful franchise in Japan and sure to drive hardware sales for Nintendo up a bit. We can't resist pondering, though, if the Wii version will re-use assets from the previous PSP games in the series.

Good move from Campcon really, they will sell more games on Wii with bigger base installed in japan and the world than PS3. Any chance they port it to XBox360? No? Neither to the xbox live?

Eh, I got to beta test monster hunter 1 on the PS2... it's the reason I never cared what the franchise did after that. Mixing up projectiles for the gun-users was kinda fun, but the game was balanced (at least in the beta) such that it was pointless to be anything but the sword guy.

Monster Hunter wasn't actually that bad if you were playing with a friend. I remember trying to catch and kill a dragon with one of my buddies on the PS2 version and it was hilarious. This of course won't work on the Wii without a keyboard or a headset though.

Also, Monster Hunter isn't like Pokemon... It's more of a single player MMO. If that even makes any sense. =D

I love this little scenario:

Anti-Nintendo Dude: "The Wii is nothing but minigames and casual titles for grandma like fishing and Jenga!"

*More substantial games are released*

AND: "You think grandma is going to buy this game? Please!"

*Software development shifts from PS3/360 to Wii*

AND: "Why are these companies trying to take the easy way out on a casual system! These games are better suited for the PS3/360!"

RECAP:
1. ANDs criticize the Wii for lack of substantial games.
2. Substantial games for the Wii appear.
3. ANDs criticize the Wii for actually addressing the issue in Step 1.
4. Repeat Steps 2-3 ad infinitum.

Okay, so PS1- and PS2-era Sony was like Baywatch? And the high attach rate for the 360 is like American Idol? So... if it is in dead last, THAT'S the only indication of quality? Oh, snap! PS3 is in the BANK! It'll be the first time Sony ever had a quality platform! And those low software sales must OBVIOUSLY mean those games are made of better stuff, right?

WTF are you going on about? All he said was he thought the game was crap (which I agree with) and you countered with sales. He then said sales doesn't equal quality and he's right. But now you're trying to extend what he said way beyond what he meant. Give it a rest.

No, it's a very relevant argument. It's the best-selling franchise on the PSP. It will sell well on the Wii, better than on the PS3 or 360 (at least in Japan) because of the large audience.

As for the quality vs. quantity argument, it all goes back to what each individual considers "quality". Just because something sells well doesn't mean it is poor quality. This is favorite mantra of Sony supporters this time around, but I certainly never heard them say anything of the sort when games on the PS2 outpaced the sales of everything on the competition, nor when the PS1 or PS2 broke the 100 million barrier.

Losing this "shitting" game is bad because losing any popular game hurts the platform.

Monster Hunter is huge in Japan! Losing Monster Hunter is, to Japanese gamers, like losing MGS would be to U.S. gamers!

Actually, Sony probably lost quite a few sales with this.
Monster Hunter was actually the game in dev that was making me seriously consider picking up a PS3. Never played the PSP versions (didn`t seem like something I`d want to play on the go), but the PS2 one was great.
It`s a great series. You`re actually out hunting monsters... Relatively realistically. None of that cutesy Pokemonesque pet-raising silliness (Not that I don`t enjoy that too, but definitely wouldn`t choose to play it on a big screen.)

Of course I`m happy now that I won`t have to pick up another console just to play it.

Man, I hope not. I'm really looking forward to an HD FF. FF on the Wii would be a gimped FF, IMO.

FF on the PS3 would be gimped. It should be on a DX10 PC with a much more stable online structure, mods, lots and lots more RAM, higher resolutions, etc.

Nintendo was smart this time around. Average Joe consumer doesn't care enough about HD yet to pay 2x the amount for it.

In 4-6 years, when the next hardware cycle rolls around, HD will be a lot more mainstream and then they will cater to that audience affordably.

Too bad the mainstream consumers are sheep too, another reason why the system doesn't sell. Those sheep tend to go for the better price point and more games (see: Xbox 360).

Hate to break the news to you but 2008 is too late. No one knows what the hell Afrika is (even Sony), MGS is going multiplatform, Killzone goes up against Gears 2, and in the meantime the combination of Halo 3 and the 360 is eating Sony's lunch this Holiday.

Sony has dug themselves a 3rd place hole that no console maker has ever dug itselves out of in the same generation.

daaaaammmm!!! first the 360 got to take away the PS3's game exclusivity, but now the Wii took away a whole game from that expensive beast! lol i see a dark future for the ps3.

They'll take Square Enix if they can't turn a profit on FFXIII

FFXIII is too far into the development-stage to be pulled to another console let alone exculsively.

More likely this will be the last exclusive "big final fantasy title" for the PS3.

The Wii is such a disappointment to Me so far.
Loaded with junk titles and bad load times.
This game would have been beautiful on a next gen console.
