The Smash Bros. MEGATON that is a surprise to nobody: Sonic confirmed

A lot of really cool stuff is coming out of the Nintendo conference that's going on in Japan right now, but this is the most immediately satisfying: Sonic the Hedgehog will be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and he'll have his Super Sonic transformation. We've all been expecting this announcement, so it's not a huge surprise, but it's still a big deal.

This brings up so many questions! Like, will Sonic be able to pick up rings to regain health? Will both attack buttons just make Sonic jump? Most importantly, will he be bringing Tails, Knuckles, Rouge the Bat, Amy Rose, Mecha Sonic, Metal Sonic, Cream the Rabbit, Big the Cat, Bean the Dynamite, and all of his other friends along?

In less happy Brawl news, the game has been delayed until January 24th for Japan. No word on whether the release date has changed for other regions, but we doubt it.

This is really awesome news. I've been a Nintendo fan all my life and never owned any other systems - but as you can probably tell from my name I've always been a huge fan of Sonic.

I would love to play as Tails, but my guess is that other characters would either be reserved as Assist Trophies or simply not in the game at all.

I bet there will be a Sonic level now...

oh my God... *wipes tear off of cheek*.... i never thought he'd be so cool... i was never a sonic fan, to be honest, but this... this is just amazing... this game is already going to be the game of the year (halo 3? what's that?), but now... game of the millennia! i truly cannot wait, i want it now.

Oh, and seriously awesome SSBB news. Sonic and online co-op. This is just shaping up to be better and better.

Um, that voice for Sonic. That's not the Sonic voice I'm familiar with. I haven't watched 4Kids' dub of Sonic X, but I've heard a lot of bellyaching about SEGA's decision to fire the original voice actors for the games and replace them with the actors that 4K cast.

So, is this the 4Kids voice of Sonic? If so, this would be quite the BAD thing for Sonic fans. There's now an organized boycott over any US version of Sonic games that use the 4Kids voices. Would Smash Bros Brawl be subject to the boycott too?

I'm pretty sure that Sonic's voice is Ryan Drummond, who was the voice of Sonic in SA1 and 2 (ie: NOT the 4kids VA).

Oh, grow up and play the damn game, all twelve of you boycotters. You're not going to damage the sales.

Now for Megaman and Simon Belmont (Castlevania), and we're set.

Watched the videos 10 times at 6am this morning before work! This news definitley made my month! One thing is definiltey for sure....Sonic has not been this cool in years... I have always been a long time sonic fan, but recently I found myself slipping away mainly due to SEGA's complete overhaul of everything that made sonic so cool and unique... Anywayz... it looks like this game is bringing back the kick @ss sonic with attitude and no girls along to fall in love with... i mean come on.. who needs love in a sonic game....jeez. O yea, and my bet is definitley on Greenhill Zone in the classic stages. Also, I would have to agree that we are prolly not gonna see any other characters from a sonic game playable in this one. I mean look at DK it took him 2 games before he got his buddy Diddy.

The best part is that we can put this all behind us. Now every discussion of Brawl won't be derailed by WHEN IS SONIC GOING TO SHOW UP

Seriously, though, all these ideas people have for characters to be included would be awesome.
