Why not? Water cooled PlayStation 3
We've yet to hear a single complaint about Sony's monolith overheating, but that didn't stop PS3 fan (and dragon aficionado) Dragonpower from drilling some holes into the bottom of his PS3, running liquid coolant over the processors, and adding some extra fans just for good measure. The end result: 32ºC (90ºF, 305.15ºK) under heavy load. Oh, and it's "almost dead silent," which we're assuming is a step down from "dead silent."

32C/90F? How hot does it run without the cooling system?
Negativecool @ Oct 10th 2007 11:32PM
PS3 Elite captured in the wild CONFIRMED!
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Oct 10th 2007 11:36PM
Impressive. Most impressive.
Dio @ Oct 10th 2007 11:39PM
I hope it doesn't leak @_@ This one guy at my school had an accident and had to buy another computer.
ThornedVenom @ Oct 11th 2007 2:23AM
He shouldn't have trusted liquid cooling. Totally overrated. ;P
Dio @ Oct 11th 2007 2:39AM
It's not overrated for the people that totally want to overclock with no penalties =P But yeah, I would never let water or antifreeze or ANY liquid for that matter near my precious electronic stuff. Unless it's a glass of orange juice, because it's that good. Screw Bawls.
Alexander @ Oct 10th 2007 11:41PM
That is TUBULAR (pun intended) :)
Mr. P @ Oct 10th 2007 11:48PM
This is something the Xbox 360 should come standard with.
Sieged Eagle @ Oct 10th 2007 11:49PM
Very original. I smell a million dollar idea. Let's hope it doesn't malfuction one of these days, because it looks like an innovative (not to mention futuristic) way for cooling game consoles.
I wonder if that can also be done with a 360 or a Wii...
1600Points @ Oct 10th 2007 11:58PM
Liquid Cooling is pretty high maitenance as well as quite a bit more expensive. Sythentic diamond is where its at.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 10th 2007 11:58PM
Yes it was done before with a XB360 I'm Not sure about the Wii.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Oct 11th 2007 5:46AM
If he can afford to liquid-cool a PS3, he can afford a new one.
Chameleon @ Oct 11th 2007 11:07AM

I'm also wondering how hot these systems get normally?! 90 degrees! Damn!
Zaidyn @ Oct 11th 2007 12:38AM
32 Degrees Celsius when under pressure is actually colder than most processors run while idling.
Clay Schumacher @ Oct 11th 2007 7:02AM
Most modern processors withstand on-die temps of upper 40s to 50s C on a regular basis. For the cell to be running under heavy load at 32C is pretty good. I wonder what it runs at under load with the normal cooling...
1600Points @ Oct 10th 2007 11:59PM
Talk about bad spelling, I apologize to all.
ark_v2 @ Oct 10th 2007 11:59PM
I'm going to tell you why not: because it doesn't need it.
NATO_Duke @ Oct 11th 2007 10:23AM
Yeah, waste of time and money just to get 30 seconds of glory on a gaming site or two.
Its like taming a tiger that hs no teeth and claws.
How about taking on a challenge that would actually be of aid?
Negativecool @ Oct 11th 2007 12:01AM
I'm wondering where the Wii's liquid cooling system is...I mean that's equally as redundant....so SOMEONE with too much time on their hands has had to have done it by now?
And I just think it would look "tubular" as already stated.
Firefox_CR @ Oct 11th 2007 12:26AM
90 degrees is really cool, temperature wise. I know graphics cards in computer are generally 120-150 degrees.
killploki @ Oct 11th 2007 12:25AM
since no one has said it yet:
now if only there were some games to play for the system....
konajinx @ Oct 11th 2007 1:20AM
Good one. As I said on this item when it was first reported on PS3 Fanboy (and also where everyone was quick to make the RRoD joke ad nauseam): it's nice to see the PS3 being put to use at long last! So what...now it can not only sit around idle trying to cure cancer and wait for games to be played on it, but it also helps out in pointless science projects. Money well spent there, money very well spent!
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 11th 2007 12:30AM
in before rrod joke
Deviation @ Oct 11th 2007 12:56AM
But not before the it's crazy expensive joke or the there are no games joke.
aristokrat @ Oct 11th 2007 1:35AM
305.15°K?!?!?!? No way! I didn't understand the significance until I read that.
Though, in the future, I would prefer Rankine conversions, because that's my scale of choice.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 11th 2007 1:52AM
that's what, 32 degrees celcius? that's pretty hot
ThornedVenom @ Oct 11th 2007 2:25AM
Damn engineers, always fixing what ain't broken. ;P
James @ Oct 11th 2007 3:59AM
Two words. Hack, Job.
siro @ Oct 11th 2007 4:40AM
Why not? Because I'll laugh my ass off, when the time for garanty claims has come. Systems don't die just on heat, you know.
ssuk @ Oct 11th 2007 6:18AM
I think he doesn't care... Else he wouldn't have drilled holes in the damn thing.
Korova @ Oct 11th 2007 6:28AM
Does it make southing sounds of running water?
That would be a system seller feature for the zen ninja gamer and feng shui affictionado.
michas_pi @ Oct 11th 2007 6:30AM
While watercooling is nice, the active air cooling system in the PS3 does an incredible job of cooling the beast.
Sakesaru @ Oct 11th 2007 6:55AM
Be nice to the crazied overclocker. I think it looks pretty damn leet. I'd be proud to have one of those with linux on it.
"PS3 Elite captured in the wild CONFIRMED!"
Best comment ever, that made me lol.
Rustallion @ Oct 11th 2007 8:13AM
Nice, but I'm not sure how much use it would be on a PS3. That would be great for the Xbox 360!
JodyAnthony @ Oct 11th 2007 8:41AM
make fun of the PS3 all you want, but they seem to be built like a rock
Norm @ Oct 11th 2007 9:13AM
Some of the PS3s at Final Round X in Atlanta overheated during the Tekken comp last year. Basically they just turned off, and no permanent damage seems to have been done. Make sure to prop it up sideways if your PS3 gets too hot, watercooling is just overkill, lol.
Todd @ Oct 11th 2007 10:12AM
I've actually seen quite a few PS3's overheating. Smoke is usually a clear sign.
However, this might be a bit overkill. I'm sure the warranty is utterly void. This is sad that someone would have to resort to a cooling system of this magnitude.
blooh (CDF - Ass Ring) @ Oct 11th 2007 10:34AM
i'm sure he could ebay it if he wanted
ZippyDSMlee @ Oct 11th 2007 10:27AM
ah to mod for the hell of it I just dun have the energy for it anymore 0-o
Joe Smith @ Oct 11th 2007 12:47PM
What a waste of time and energy. On the other hand, it's not like there is anything else to do with a PS3.
Hiro Suri @ Oct 11th 2007 6:23PM
Kelvin is not measured in degrees. It would just be 305.15K.
Yes, I'm nitpicking.
No, I don't care.
