Wii Japan getting DS downloads, contest channels
Come this November, Wii owners in Japan won't have to venture into the wilds of the internet for information on upcoming games or go down to the local retail chain to try out the latest DS titles, as Nintendo has announced plans to launch the Minna no Nintendo Channel (Everybody's Nintendo Channel), promising to turn the Wii into a Nintendo DS Station retail kiosk for the living room. According to IGN, this latest channel in the Wii's arsenal, which was announced during Nintendo's 2007 Fall press conference in Japan, will offer promo videos for upcoming games, as well as allow players to download playable demos, though the report only mentions DS demos at this time, solidifying the linkage between both the Wii and Nintendo's touchable handheld.
Just the same, we remain thrilled to see Nintendo warming up to the idea of demos, and are hopeful that this could open the door for a similar treatment for Wii games, though sooner rather than later would be nice. In addition, the channel will also include a bit of social networking, allowing players to search for information on games based on data provided by other Wii users.
While less exciting, the Minna no Nintendo Channel will also be joined by the Mii Contest Channel this November in Japan as well, offering a place where players can show off their Mii creations, as well as vote on and even take home other people's Miis. While no release date for either channel has been announced for the U.S. or Europe, we've informed Dr. Zoidberg and he's already packed his bags.

Let's get an honest and frank discussion going...will VC games ever be playable on the current generation of Nintendo DS hardware?
The DS demos are fantastic, and already proven, but I want to take my Super Metroid with me...

They would have to find a way to attach emulator software to the DS. I suppose it could be part of the download. Still, you wouldn't be able to turn the DS off without losing the game.

I wouldn't mind losing the game when the DS is shut off, IF I could somehow sync up the state of the game to the Wii before I shut the DS down.

I think the best way to do it would be to release a VC cartridge for the DS. You'd obviously have to pay for it (probably $20-30 USD), but you get to take your VC games with you wherever you go.
I think the largest DS cart is 512MB, so space shouldn't be an issue.

If they did a VC cart, they could send it for free to people who have registered a DS on their site, expecting to make up the cost in VC sales.
Being as concerned as they are with piracy, though, I doubt they would do that.

DS screen resolution is low, though. Lower than NES and SNES, even.
RD @ Oct 10th 2007 3:22PM
Um, no it's not.
Joshua @ Oct 11th 2007 6:24PM
Are you kidding? NES and SNES = 256 x 240 (or so)
DS = 256 x 192

If this doesn't come to America I will be sad sad sad.

I was also reading off some Japanese site earlier (Dengeki Online or Famitsu, forgot which) that Iwata didn't rule out "WiiWare" was Wii-only. We could see small-time games for DS downloaded via the Wii, kinda like how the XBL Arcade works on the 360. Not that it matters much to indie developers, you still have to meet high requirements to actually get into the WiiWare programme. =/
