EA to acquire BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios
Monolithic publisher EA has today announced an agreement with Elevation Partners to purchase VG Holding Corp. -- a move which sees EA becoming the owner of both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios. A shocking move to be certain, but one that should make complete sense to a publisher looking to strengthen its lineup of role-playing games and action titles. BioWare, currently finishing development on November's Microsoft-published Mass Effect, has proven itself to be one of the leading developers in the genre, and Pandemic Studios' Mercenaries franchise has shown an alarming propensity for blowing things up.
Closing January 2008, the purchase will cost EA up to $620 million in cash payment to the stockholders of VG Holding Corp., with another $155 million in equity going to "certain employees" of VG Holding Corp., "subject to time-based or performance-based vesting criteria." EA has also agreed to lend VG Holding Corp $35 million through the closing of the purchase. Ray Muzyka, Co-founder and CEO of BioWare Corp, thinks it's all money well spent. "This vision is consistent with BioWare's focus on crafting the highest quality story-driven games in the world," he says. "It will enable us to further the careers of the passionate, creative and hard working teams at BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Austin."
EA will hold a conference call later today to discuss the acquisition. Oh, and here are all the exclamation marks we wanted to put in the headline: !!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant move by EA. Let's hope it doesn't screw us gamers.
Zediker @ Oct 11th 2007 5:18PM
um, how could it not screw gamers... this -is- EA we're taking about...
Long Bow @ Oct 11th 2007 5:58PM
This WILL screw us gamers. EA is that whore in the dark alley that drags her teeth on you and has her gorilla of a pimp rob you when your pants are down. The only thing EA is known for is rehashing games and pushing half assed games based on movies. I just pray that I won't see EA making Knights of the Old Republic XV, The Return of Revan's sister's ex-boyfriend's college roommate.
Digi Smalls @ Oct 11th 2007 6:14PM
you have no idea how heartbreaking and saddening this news really is do you?
Pandemic/Bioware represented two top class developers coming together trying to pioneer independent developer self publishing. they were the best chance of getting rid of the publisher/developer model.
this means that vital and hopeful experiment failed, validating the existence of mega publishers for years to come.
this is truly truly sad news, that will resonate throughout the industry and we will all feel.

Somebody help me out here. I'm really looking forward to Call of Duty 4. But Electronic Arts is responsible for it. But I really want that game. But it's EA we're talking about. Now, the logic behind some of your posts here indicate that this game is guaranteed to be soulless and terrible. Should I stop looking forward to it because the EA logo comes on at boot-up?
estomped @ Oct 12th 2007 6:04AM
@Digi Smalls
What the hell are you talking about?
Call of duty 4 is made by Infinity Ward, which is owned by Activision...
estomped @ Oct 12th 2007 6:06AM
Oops, sorry, I mean @ IlyaG
IlyaG @ Oct 12th 2007 11:56AM
Oh, you're right! It is Activision! Thank God! I thought I would have to buy an EA game. I have honestly not purchased one since at least the 90s. Good!

Anti-trust laws, anyone?
Mr Khan @ Oct 11th 2007 5:51PM
I doubt EA could ever get slapped, under US law, for trust-forming, unless they start cutting deals with Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony
Something like "we tell you which 3rd party games you can license, or we'll cut our support and take it elsewhere"
Now the EU is more hostile to corporations, but even then, antitrust is still a long way off

Killjebus @ Oct 11th 2007 4:40PM
I hope Bioware's quality does not suffer too much with EA's put the game on every single platform no matter what policy.
Poisoned Al @ Oct 11th 2007 7:56PM
HAHAHA! Are you kidding? EA tries to buy talent, but said talent runs a metric mile at the sight of oppressive, monolithic companies like EA. So all they have is the licences and a handful of poor buggers that couldn't get work anywhere else. EA then runs the licence into the ground with a load of half-arsed sequels, filled with in game advertising and shitty, manufactured rock bands for the music.
um..wow @ Oct 11th 2007 4:40PM
ugn in other news: Bioware's quality to go down the toilet.
Agent4187 @ Oct 11th 2007 4:42PM
Pictures: Oddly appropriate.
Well, this could either be really, really good,or really, really bad. It all depends on what EA does with it's "Newfound" powers of awesome. Do they use them for good, allowing their super developers to make better games with use of their giant wallet, or is the next Madden going to come out of Bioware's offices?

Fox318 @ Oct 11th 2007 5:26PM
Don't forget the Mass Effect Kart racing, pool, table-tennis, Miis Effect, Mass Effect on phones.
All games will have ingame ads and Madden references.
Jonah Falcon @ Oct 11th 2007 5:32PM
Mass Effect IP is owned by Microsoft. Bioware will do other multiplatform titles.
mcatrage @ Oct 11th 2007 6:47PM
You forgot the 20 separate DLC packs.
TrojanGuy @ Oct 11th 2007 9:12PM
All of which are just like the first Mass Effect, but with updated rosters!
Sam @ Oct 11th 2007 4:48PM
what we happen to Mass Effect 2 and 3? In game advertising? Some stupid add-ons? Will they charge even MORE for DLC content or even advancing in the game. Unless they leave Bioware to its own devices and let it have funding from the EA umbrella, I'll take it. But if they do a shake up and ruin yet another studio from the EA monolith...I'll be deeply saddened.
cuso26 @ Oct 11th 2007 4:48PM
Enjoyed it while it lasted, BioWare!
R.I.P. and enjoy your time at "Ye Olde Dev House Old Folks Home" where you can all talk about the glory days you once enjoyed before being assimilated.
*tips hat*

KOTOR 2008 with updated rosters
KOTOR 2009 with updated rosters and recruiting mode
KOTOR 2010 with updated rosters and hot routes
Will this lead to the BioWare Curse, where whatever character is on the cover ends up getting injured during the game?
EihBeir @ Oct 11th 2007 4:51PM
So long, Good Games.
It was nice while you were around.
Tyler @ Oct 11th 2007 4:54PM
ugh... the only way this is ok is if EA is completely hands-off with BioWare - being the shareholder-driven, quality-damning company that they are, EA will never let that happen.
Ralod @ Oct 11th 2007 4:55PM
Wonder what this means for the so far PC only Dragon Age? Dumbed down kidified version inc to a ps3 near you 2009!
Shawn @ Oct 11th 2007 8:35PM
i'm fuckin really worried in all honesty. Dragon Age will not work on consoles, as it's just like Neverwinter Nights(actually been called the new neverwinter), with a very heavy and kickass interface only usable with a mouse and keyboard. Unfortunately, I can see EA shifting the Bioware Austin team somewhere else, like Mass Effect 2. As soon as I read that headline, i said fuck, there goes Dragon Age. I just have a bad feeling, nothing more. I mean Neverwinter Nights 1 sold multiple millions of copies, so that's the one good thing going for the exclusivity of the game on PC...let's hope!
Matt B @ Oct 11th 2007 4:55PM
Goodbye good exclusives!!!!!
Digi Smalls @ Oct 11th 2007 5:48PM
and hello more inferior ports on PS3. congrats.
.
Matt B @ Oct 11th 2007 10:48PM
It must suck to be a jaded PS3 owner. Take a long look at your comment history and relish in the fact that you really have nothing positive to say about anything.
In fact, if you couldn't complain, you wouldn't have ANYTHING to say.
Digi Smalls @ Oct 12th 2007 11:12AM
for once, you're right Matt B.
it DOES suck to be a jaded PS3 owner. but what's the source of the jade? well, because i also have a 360. i see whats on the other side.
why do i have to take the usual Sony cheerleader role like yourself?
manipulated into some obscene all-forgiving brand loyalty, live blissfully in ignorance, never even considering touching a wicked 360. but i'm not a brand boy. i like videogames, whatever machine it's on.
trust me, i would've been much happier if the PS3 was half of as good as Sony promised and you'd never know my name because i'd have no reasons to post complaints. i'd rather be playing games.
i wanted nothing more than something better than what i currently had, the 360, and i'm still waiting.

haha overheard from a former EA employee:
"I give them two years before they fuck up both those studios"
Too @ Oct 11th 2007 4:59PM
So much for any developer involved with Microsoft Game Studios.
Isn't this the fourth new story in a row about a developer who's releasing a major game from Microsoft?
Ska Oreo @ Oct 11th 2007 5:00PM
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*sobs*
It\\\'sAme! @ Oct 11th 2007 5:03PM
So expect 3/4 of the items that were orginally going to be included in Mass Effect to end up on the 360 marketplace for 2$ a piece. You can even get the top item in the came right at the start for 20$ and for a low low price you can now get horse armor for your character for a measly 99 000$.
gwangi @ Oct 11th 2007 5:04PM
Well that is sucktastic
ogvor @ Oct 11th 2007 5:07PM
Wow, that is really quite suprising. I don't think it's really doom and gloom some might get at first glance (oh no!, EA be messin up mah games!) since the same people will be working on the same games, but that's to really good studios going over to EA...
So I wonder...
What if EA made it's own console? Can you say Madden exclusivity? Just a thought...
jp @ Oct 11th 2007 5:08PM
next: bungie is bought by EA
Leo @ Oct 11th 2007 11:27PM
