Valve's Gabe Newell comes down hard on PS3

Valve's Gabe Newell has been pretty open about his displeasure with the PS3 in the past, and it's clear from a recent interview that time has not softened him, calling the system "a waste of everyone's time" in Edge magazine last week. Newell continued, saying, "Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created. I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution."

Though Newell is one of the few developers in a position to speak out on the system (we would too if our game was rocking a 98 on Metacritic), a slew of PS3 game delays have us wondering: Is he speaking the minds of more than we know?

I will briefly explain my position so the rich idiots with no kids dont just flame me without reading my page.

I have a 4 and 6yr old. I have over 200 ps2 games which they love to play.
I cannot easily have two consoles cabled up and my kids cannot swap cables on their own!
Very good games are still being released for the ps2 and they are cheaper than the PS3
Ps3 games are extremely limited in number
I would buy a 60gig ps3 if the BC worked properly, but unfortunately the morons at sony couldnt even get that right and it wont support half our games and many that it does support lose a lot of functionality.
yes I want to play ps3 games but not at the sacrifice of PS2, and many are in a similar position. If Sony dont make a BC compatible console, there are thousands of us that will just buy something different, and cheaper with more games.

if it costs 10 million dollars of development time/resources to harness 50% of the cell when the same amount harnesses 90% of the other consoles power.... the excess is a waste of time.

you can never assume unlimited resources for development. what doesn't make it to market doesnt exist. potential is nothing. delivery is everything.

whats amazing is how much credit people give the cell.
it was supposed to be so powerful it would take over the job of the gpu.
it obviously failed to pull that off.
any graphics power the ps3 has is due to nvidia's gpu.
