Harry Redknapp, manager of the Portsmouth team in the English Premier League, has expressed some concern about what he believes is a lack of local lads willing to kick balls and score goals. In a column for The Sun, he opines that the British working class is turning its back on the sport, too absorbed by the fancy graphics and inert pleasures of digital entertainment. It seems back in his day, the kids "lived and breathed football." But now? "All I see are the dazzling lights of bedroom windows from the glare of TVs and computers."
Unconcerned by his admittance to being some sort of peeping tom, Harry insists that the "hunger and drive" of working class boys has been replaced by "video game passion." If "football cannot compete with an X-Box," the situation must be especially grave when said "X-box" is playing FIFA '08. Unable to face the insurgence of gaming in a constantly changing youth culture, Redknapp reckons he'll turn to Africa's players who "want it more." It's not like they have video games there... right?

If kids like video games more than soccer, that's just the way it's going to be. No one ever said a sport had to remain popular forever.

As unlikely as it is, I relish the idea of video games unseating sports as the preferred obssession of the average male. I can't count the number of times my video game sessions were preempted by American football, basketball, and baseball. Fuck mainstream sporting events. BTW I'm not bitter at all.

people used to play soccer because they had nothing better to do and were probably poor
now people have money to buy video games, and videogames EXIST, so they choose which they find more fun

Maybe they finally learned what America has known all the time, soccer is lame and boring. Video games FTW.

America is also the country that brought the world the exciting sport known as baseball.
I'd take soccer over baseball any day...

if you like watching fatasses stand around for 3 hours then baseball is your thing. i'd equate baseball players with the same level of athleticism as golfers. i challenge any pro baseball player to play 10 minutes of high school level soccer and not get a heart attack.
soccer is the world's sport. baseball is family-oriented filler. it's america's past time: because fat kids can actually play this one.

Except for the fact that high school soccer is a girl's sport and most US schools do not have male soccer teams. Soccer is not the worlds sport, it's the 3rd worlds sport. Gives the impoverished countries something to feel good about. NFL Football and NHL Hockey ftw.

Soccer is more active - 18 people are basically running for 90 min. Baseball gives every one a chance to be the focus of attention - a star - hitting that run, and americanos each that up.
so for health, i'd prefer soccer, for ideology - baseball.

While video games could be ONE potential problem, there's equal argument for many others. Parents who live through their children. Club politics which ignore certain players over others because they know their dad or coach. The child is short, which limits their on field effectiveness.
Remember, most children love playing games, whether video or sports. It's the external influences and pressures that determine what sort of games the child ends up enjoying most.

Not mentioning that Media these days in the UK suggests that if you let your child over the park to play football he or she is going to get mugged, stabbed, raped, kidnapped and sold into slavery somewhere in Romania....

He was just trying to find a false good reason why he might sign up blacks in his team. He could have he would turn to other countries, but instead he specifically outed the one continent which stereotypically has the most endurance.

Every time I see Harry Redknapp, I think one thing: How fit must his wife be? His son is a handsome guy, he looks like Droopy. I never get around to googling her because it might destroy the illusion.

Maybe English kids are just becoming less gay. Have you ever considered that if you were watching two soccer games, one composed of professional athletes and one consisting of sixth graders, from a bird's-eye-view you wouldn't be able to tell the difference?

This point would be somewhat accurate if the Bird in question was flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet... and had poor eye sight. Sadly, as it is, itr is just another poor dig at the WORLD's greatest sport. Shame USA can't play, but hey, you can't win it all.

Actually, bar Olympic sports and Tennis, America are very isolated with their sports. I don't know how it came about, but there's American sports, and what-every-one-else plays sports. American sports tend to be faster paced but... well.. a bit dumb, while the others are slower placed but more technical. Introducing one to the other's audeance ALWAYS ends in disaster.

I'd like to know how you came to that conclusion based on baseball, american football, golf, etc. Basketball is fast paced, but no more so than soccer.

My favorate example is in motor sport. In the NASCAR is kept simple with the emphasis on overtaking and entertaining the crowed. All well and good, but you can't hide the fact it's a load of rednecks going around in circles in fibreglass cars. On the flip side is Formula One. Hyper advanced (and expensive) cars that not only could drive on a tunnel ceiling, but can turn left AND right and can only be driven by the uber fit. However, as it's a technology race as much as it is a driver one, you get years where one team is way better then the others and it's as boring as hell to watch.
I wish there was a middle ground, but the world is never perfect.

Jonny, mate. Talk sense.
"Explain how the two games in question would look any different."
I do not need to explain, your ignorance about anything outside of America speaks for itself. If you genuinely believe there is no difference between professional and school FOOTBALL (It is played with the feet, unlike that watered down game of Rugby your Fratboys play), then I worry about the state of your sanity. However: I would suggest the pace, length of passes played, power of shots etc. would be a good place to begin comparison. Oh, and the score-line would also be significantly lower in the adult game; admittedly this would put off the vast majority of Americans from watching as they prefer sports that end with scores like 180-130. Just like the kids really.
As for your posturing that “the rest of the world can have soccer and we'll stick to kicking the shit out of you guys in everything else”, would you care to elaborate, because outside of Athletics, I’m struggling to think of a sport the U.S. “dominates” at the moment. Tiger woods is an anomaly, and on the wane. The Russians are kicking your arse producing Heavyweights at the moment, and tennis is pretty much sewn up by an Austrian. Sure you are pretty competent at those sports/excuses for commercial breaks you guys adapted, but I suppose we will never know… The last World Cup final was between Italy and France whereas the last "World" Series?!… Hmmm (strokes chin).

what kind of sport gets scores around 300? that's crazy
i like football, lots of different ways to get varying amounts of points
and baseball's good too, it's one of the few sports without a clock, and there's overtime. seriously, ending games with a tie and no overtime is gay

Canadian Soccer Association - administers Canadian national soccer teams which suck a gigantic meat missile

Well it could be the social phenomenon that each time more young people start to act more like jackasses and now people are less friendly and more aggressive than before, let's say primitively aggressive and with Video games fast food and other crap most kids are getting fat.
Basically you have a bunch of fat, socially aggressive kids that rather play videogames and call everyone a f*g in the xlive than playing a sport especially one that relies in teamwork also like Blooh said most of the people playing soccer were poor now they have money they rather play something else.

I dunno about you man, but all the athletes I have met have been pretty much on the same level of asshole as online gaming addicts. And lets not even bring the sports parents into this... yesh. At least with video games the anger is usually coming from a few people, not yelled at you from all sides by fans, parents, coaches, etc...
What I'm saying in, gamers are probably less overall aggressive than athletes, especially those that play for school teams or professionally...
