This is where Microsoft could have made a difference. I'm of the opinion, the 360 should have dropped it's price earlier in the year, forcing Nintendo and Sony to follow suit to remain behind at a higher price point.

Instead, Microsoft maintained the same pricing for a long time, even matched Sony, then price reduced a little.

Nintendo is selling well as the cheapest console, but what some are finding, the games overall are lacking, after you buy the top 8 or so titles.

There is certainly no reason for Nintendo to lower their price point. I've yet to ever see a Wii console avaialble in the store.

I actually thought it was pretty good with battery life, but maybe I just haven't noticed since I use rechargeables.

Well, the Wii actually received a price adjustment here in Canada, from $289 to $269 given the strength of our dollar. It's still a little frustrating that despite US-Canada parity, the Wii is still $20 more here, but it's better than nothing.

I don't think a lot of you people understand, that even if the Xbox 360 and PS3 were both lowered to $100 inexplicably, the Wii would still be $250, as long as it continued to sell out worldwide. The pricing of a product is not contingent on the price of its competitors. It is contingent upon demand. Now would demand go down if all of a sudden you could get 360s and PS3s for $100? Yeah, of course it would. But it wouldn't be instantaneous.

Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony do not care about what the other people price their machines, except for the effect it has on their demand. Which I'm sure they have statisticians in the financial department to forecast.

Simple business, you drop the price when you can sustain the price drop and when you feel the product is slowing in sales. Which... Is no problem for the Wii. The bastard is STILL sold out across Europe.

Actually, if you consider the value of the dollar is plummeting, we ARE getting a price drop, haha.

But why would they drop the price? It's selling well and they are making less off our weak dollar. It does not make any sense to drop the price at this point.

Meh, 250 dollars in the end isn't inaccessible. On the other hand, add improvements to the SKU, make new colors or something.

Even though it is obvious the Wii doesn't need a price drop to sell, I think it will need a price drop to remain competitive.

Wii + 1 minigame @ Christmas = $250

Xbox 360 Arcade + 5 minigames + memory card (and wireless contoller to boot) = $280

I don't know about you, but as an informed consumer, I think the 360 package is a heck of a lot better deal. More games, a memory card, the option for a hard drive, the ability of HD and an infinitely better online service.

The Core system was at this price point but was viewed as a gimped model, the Arcade system however is a fully functional 360 (just with less storage capacity). This is the only reason why I would expect Nintendo to drop their price- because it's a value system and shouldn't be competing with the 360's pricepoint.

Good point. But if the consumer asks one of their techy friends, they will laugh at the suggestion of the core.

Doesn't everyone have a techy friend? LOL

Oh please...

The Wii is STILL a better deal no matter how you slice it, Mr. "Informed Consumer".

Wii: $250 + 1 disc with 5 minigames, 512mb available memory and wireless controller.

360 Arcade: $280 + 256mb memory card with 5 minigames and wireless controller.

Again, no matter how you slice it, the Wii comes across as more bang for your buck.

samfish,

Perhaps you skipped over the part of my post which noted all the OPTIONS the 360 Arcade would provide that the Wii does not. Let me point them out again...

1. Fully integrated online service
2. The ABILITY to add more storage (240x more than the Wii to be exact)
3. Both quantity and quality of game library
4. High definition capabilities
5. Media extender capabilities
6. Plays DVD's (and upscales to HD)
7. Says "5 free games" on box (apparent value)
8. Comes with a memory card (portable storage)

So yes, as an INFORMED consumer, the 360 Arcade seems to offer a better value as it offers me options and some upgradability if I would like to expand my storage or invest in HD in the future. The Wii does not have the capabilities of the 360, plain and simple.

The Wii was priced at $250 when the Core was priced at $300 and required another $40 for storage and another $50 for a wireless controller. The 360 Arcade now includes all of that and closes the gap from a $140 difference to $30.

You really think that Nintendo can sell Wii's as the value system they're marketing it as when the 360 and PS3 start to hit the same price range? Half of the Wii's success is DUE to it being so much cheaper than the competition. Take that advantage away and you're left with underpowered hardware with an overinflated pricetag. I'm sorry if you don't agree.

Upgradability doesn't matter, though. It's about what you're getting out of the box. And when you compare what you're getting straight out of the box, especially as a GAMING CONSOLE, the Wii offers everything the Arcade does for less. It's just that simple.
So Online service? Doesn't matter. Need internet connection AND any "informed consumer" would tell you it's worthless without Gold, which costs money.
Option to add more storage? Doesn't matter. Need to spend more money.
Game library? Completely subjective. Doesn't matter.
Media center capabilities? Doesn't matter. Need the right PC.
The 5 free games and memory card we already covered. Part of the $280 value.
I can't (personally, at least) argue with the DVD and HD option, though. Whether that's a better value comes down to the individual consumer, though.

I don't get why the PS3 was mentioned. Was it to get people off topic or just to try and start a flame war again? Please stop reporting the obvious if it is so obvious.
