Lil' Reggie digs Super Mario Galaxy in new trailer
Either way, the clips shown look great, hitting us right in the inner child that remembers having a stiff neck from playing Super Mario 64 for two hours straight at the local Blockbuster Video. Though we're not sure we understand the rationale behind choosing a tiny Reggie doppelgänger as the front man for the ad, we most definitely understand the little guy's enthusiasm.

I can't decide of Mario Galaxy or Brawl has more fanservice.
...but I'm damn well lovin' every last bit of it!
ruibing @ Oct 15th 2007 2:31PM
I think is has long been overdue for Mario fans. It really looks fun.
Noshino @ Oct 15th 2007 12:54PM
....UR MR GAY still there....rofl
ShortFuse @ Oct 15th 2007 1:24PM
I caught that too. I really hope they don't take it out since the joke will last for years.
blooh (CDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 15th 2007 12:57PM
there's coop in this?
and the people were just to show that the controls aren't hard to use. they just picked a black kid and asian guy for multiculturality
Psaakyrn @ Oct 15th 2007 1:06PM
coop but not in a traditional sense, it seems. Only one person control's mario's movements (thus, only 1 nunchuck attachment), but there can be more than one pointer onscreen.
Bryan Carr @ Oct 15th 2007 4:24PM
No announcer? No "hooks" that don't have much to do with the game? Pretty much all gameplay footage?
I don't know how successful the ad will be, but I have to admit, this is a nice change of pace from most game ads.
FK @ Oct 15th 2007 1:01PM
Mario 64 can finally pack up and move to Boca Raton for retirement.

Maybe it's Reggie's son?

I shall call him... Mini-me!

FIIS-AM-AY!
its 2 french words fils = son, aime(aimé) = loved
religiousjedi @ Oct 15th 2007 1:14PM
Intriguing...however, I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
Prove it to me Mario! Prove to me that you are STILL the man. You did a good job with New Super Mario Bros., in returning to your 2D roots. Now prove to me that you really do deserve the 3D realm!!! This Sat/Sun...you have your best chance...
(Yes, I was not fond of Super Mario 64... *gasp!*)
AstroZombie @ Oct 15th 2007 1:34PM
I don't think Mario has anything to prove. Mario 64 basically invented free-roaming third-person 3D gameplay. So, y'know, what's your point?
religiousjedi @ Oct 15th 2007 1:37PM
My point? Though Mario may have "basically invented free-roaming third-person 3D gameplay," I was not impressed. I felt that the gameplay was dull and somewhat repetitive.
But those are just my thoughts.
Jack @ Oct 15th 2007 1:49PM
Everyone always tries to stab me when I say the same thing you did. I didn't like Mario 64 either. Like some may prefer Metroid 2-D I prefer my Mario 2-D

blooh (CDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 15th 2007 2:03PM
i didn't like mario64 much either. it was aite, but the camera was a bit wonky and you had to get certain jumps just perfect
Jake @ Oct 15th 2007 2:11PM
If Mario Galaxy is received as well by critics and gamers as Mario 64 was, then that is all that matters. You have the right to your own opinion, but your opinion really is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't matter that you didn't like Mario 64 when most people loved it. Nobody really cares what you think. We just hope Galaxy is anywhere near as awesome as 64 was.
t_m @ Oct 15th 2007 2:15PM
After owning it for a year and never really getting into it, i'm now totally hooked on Mario64 DS.
It took me a little while to get the hang of the controls, and get into the right mindset for how it all hangs together... but now its an awesome game.
Considering how old the original is it works really well, still feels like a modern game, looks pretty darn god, and has loads of cool little touches.
That said.. i'll be interested to see how well a pure mario game does on the Wii now that the playerbase has shifted.
mfed3 @ Oct 15th 2007 2:25PM
youre entitled you your opinion, but what made mario so good was the amazingly tight controls and animations. almost every 3rd person game has horrible animations making movement very jerky, unrealistic, and hard to control. while some may have their problems controlling the camera, (japan im looking at you) the game was still overall really good due to its originality. however, i dont see anything new here, everything could have been done on the n64 as an expansion pack. nintendo constantly rehashes every single game they develop with little to no new ips. take the risk nintendo. i want to see something new other than mario and mario wii this, donkey kong wii that. give me new characters and ips or im not getting a wii. not even smash bros is going to pry my hands off my 360 unless i see something different between melee and the new one. anyone agree?
bm @ Oct 15th 2007 2:44PM
"however, i dont see anything new here, everything could have been done on the n64 as an expansion pack."
Wait, wait, what?
Hahaha, do we have an "ignore user" button here? We don't. Oh well. :(
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 15th 2007 2:56PM
I also want new IPs but sadly for you and me mfed3 the Wii is a console dedicated to pure fan service, to prove my point look at Project HAMMER,I was looking forward to that game in fact Project HAMMER and SSB:B were my personal reasons to get a Wii but then PH was cancelled why? Who knows but the next thing I know is that there was a new Mario kart game coming :/
To be honest it seems that the only reason to get a Wii is purely for SSB:B which again is pure fan service, if it wasn’t for Sonic and Snake I wouldn’t be even considering buying a Wii. Is sad in the past Nintendo titles were original and pretty rad now it seems Nintendo only keeps beating the dead horse of their old success.
Another example Fire emblem, I rarely hear any fanboy talk about this game.
Now that’s more like the actual successor SM64 and is all have about it, that means I think is good but I wouldn’t buy the Wii entirely for UR MR GAY.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 15th 2007 2:58PM
Mfed: Pikmin and Animal Crossing say Hi, just off the top of my head, as does "Wii-" anything.
And while you're bitching, why don't you call bungie and tell them to come up with something besides master chief, or square and tell them you're tired of "Final Fantasy" and "Dragon Quest". Or tell Capcom to come up with something besides "Mega Man".
Franchises rule the video game market. Don't pretend that Nintendo is the only one guilty just because there franchises just happen to stay good games through every iteration. EVEN SUNSHINE, to you naysayers.
beano @ Oct 15th 2007 3:27PM
So why does everyone jump on Nintendo for not coming up with anything new? Look at all the work they've done. They create systems and develop games for the systems themselves. Does Microsoft really develop and publish games that can even touch the greatness of any of Nintendo's franchises? Does Sony? No... They all rely on third party developers for their great games. Halo maybe published by Microsoft Game Studios, but who developed it? Bungie, not Microsoft.
How much more innovation do you want from them? Saying Mario Sunshine or Mario Galaxy isn't innovative is like saying Kevin Bacon wasn't in Footloose... (I hope someone gets that reference)
Mr Khan @ Oct 15th 2007 4:12PM
@ Word of the Street: Project Hammer was canceled because it was essentially another tech-demo, the idea just wasn't feasible
The new Nintendo IP will be fulfilled by Disaster: Day of Crisis, believe you me
Rubang B (NDF - Heart) @ Oct 15th 2007 10:38PM
Dear anybody ripping Nintendo for not coming up with anything new,
They came up with THE DS and THE WII, 2 brand new things you might have heard of that are dominating the industry. That is all.
Yours truly,
Rubang B
ALH @ Oct 15th 2007 1:17PM
I think im still a sega kid at heart, even after all these years i dont 'get' mario, so this doesnt really excite me.
nice to see a game with bright colours for one though
Kefka @ Oct 15th 2007 1:55PM
Sonic hasn't had a decent game in years. It sucks to be a Sega kid at heart. (for you anyway)
Mario pretty much owns Sonic now. Sonic will never get a decent game unless Shigeru Miyamoto designs it himself. An we all know that's never going to happen.
Sonic Team is pretty much worthless at this point.
It's sad. :(
ALH @ Oct 15th 2007 2:09PM
sonic had its day once it went 3d- a new sonic game made of awesome and win would recognise this once and for all and give the series a new stylistic and gameplay twist on the ol fun act of holding left and pressin A every 5 seconds instead of catering to the fur crowd.
Besides, i'm more of a...'second party' sega kid- Ecco and REZ, mmmmmmmm.
Zertoss @ Oct 15th 2007 2:21PM
If you're holding left, I think you've got Sonic running the wrong way. ;)
No, Sonic! The signpost is that way! ->
ALH @ Oct 15th 2007 2:26PM
haha, crap, i meant right. Perhaps this is the new direction sonic needs to go in!
iofthestorm @ Oct 15th 2007 9:40PM
@ guy who said there are no good sonic games: Sonic Rush (DS) begs to differ...
Shmil @ Oct 15th 2007 1:17PM
wow 11 years ago i was begging my parents for a n64 for my birthday, somehow my dad managed to get one, now i'm about to turn 21 and i have a sudden urge to play through mario 64 again

god what a beautiful game. the use of color brings a tear to my eye
Seraphim @ Oct 15th 2007 2:46PM
Yes because every other game is in black and white.
Kazi @ Oct 15th 2007 3:12PM

How long can those people actually play that game sitting like that with their arms unsupported? I'm sure their forearms would fall-off in about 15 mins max, but eventually you could have popeye arms.
Psaakyrn @ Oct 15th 2007 1:22PM
Or they actually take a break every 15 minutes. Like you're theoretically supposed to do anyway.
slickestjg @ Oct 15th 2007 1:25PM
Does anyone actually take a break every 15 minutes? Its like the signs along the highway that say "Stay Awake, Take a Break, for Safety Sake"...honestly who does that? When your trying to enjoy/beat a game are you really going to stop playing it?
blooh (CDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 15th 2007 1:26PM
the playtesters get a 10 min break every couple of hours
mr nimblewick (SegaDF - Jogurt Ring) @ Oct 15th 2007 1:27PM
I just rest my arm on my body.
Shagittarius @ Oct 15th 2007 2:34PM
I take a break every 10 minutes to take another hit from the crack pipe and check on my baby.
Akamaru @ Oct 15th 2007 1:28PM
Thats Racist!
But seriously just because its some light skinned black guy doesn't mean it is supposed to be Reggie.
Doug Kaplan @ Oct 15th 2007 7:40PM
Not sure if you are serious Akamaru but I was also questioning why this guy is called Lil' Reggie other than the complexion. How come we didn't say the Asian guy was Morimoto or Iwata? This whole article is kinda racist and i'm surprised only Akamaru said anything.
Joe Winders @ Oct 15th 2007 8:45PM
No, that's not racist. Man, what pansies we've got these days.
