Update: Rare ain't talkin'. "There's always rumors going around about different games we may or may not be doing but we'd prefer not to comment on rumors at this stage," the developer told GamesIndustry.biz.
Our favorite kind of rumors to post are the ones that make perfect sense to us and this nugget from Indian gaming site Game Guru is just such a rumor. Apparently, the author's "sources" are telling him that Rare is hard at work on a sequel to Perfect Dark. Apparently, in this chronological follow-up to the N64 title, Joanna Dark is, well, darker, and the game has a new built-in morality system to match.
Though completely a rumor at this point, this makes a lot of sense. With no Halo (save for the RTS) title, Gears of War 2 is going to need a little help holding up the tent pole. As far as action titles go, we're not sure there's a more logical successor than Perfect Dark. And hey, maybe this one will even be fun!

The single player campaign of Perfect Dark Zero=Poor
Multiplayer=Good-Excellent
There were so many cry babies, but most of it came from the fact they didn't have their precious auto-aim. PDZ has 32 player online play, flexible/dynamic maps, and some awesome gametypes, e.g. Infection. I don't know about you folks but I would definitely like a sequel, and I'm hoping that the campaign will be much better and I'm still holding out that they'll bring back counter-operative mode!

God I hope not, Microsoft ruined the franchise. They should do the right thing and give the rights to the game to Free Radical. They're the guys that made the original, but left when M$ bought the company.

I think that one of the best things about Perfect Dark is that it has a really good set-up a far as its story (futuristic corporate espionage and such) and the characters are pretty good, especially Joanna. Certain things should be scrapped from Zero (the cartoony graphics, carrington's terribly over the top accent, etc), basically get rid of the cheese and go back to the feel of the N64 version (pre-elvis). The fact that this rumor says that they're planning to go darker is definitely a good thing imo, so lets hope for a more polished game that's more serious.

I hope this rumor isn't true. The 360 has so many shooters, an abundance of shooters. Rare could make something unique and exciting instead.

Yes, please no more Perfect Dark Zero garbage. The first game did suck in just about every way possible. The graphics were a joke and the gameplay was horrible. I've bought many games in my day, but PDZ was and still is the worse game I've ever purchased.
Hrm.. Killzone 2 or Perfect Dark Zero 2.. How embarassing for the Xbox 360.

the first game was good. It still has one of the best online modes to date with various modes, 32 players lag free (probably the only game to do so) and has custom server browsers (halo 3 is missing) and a varity of fun gametypes.
I bought a 360 for perfect dark zero on launch. I admit I was disapointed that it was nothing like PD44 (gameplay and story wise) but it was a fun game in its own respects. If people looked at it for its own game and stopped comparing it to the old n64 title, they would see that it wa actually fun.
For a launch title, it had some of the best achievments. Most launch titles had terrible achievments as developers did not know what to do with them as they were all new to it.
I think the main problem with PD0 is the alien theme from p64 was almost completely removed. There where no aliens in the single player, no alien technology, and no alien weaponry at all for multiplayer. A perfect dark 2 seems like it would be alot better because it would bring all this stuff back (hopefully). Guns like the phoenix, calisto, mauler, (better laptop gun), farsight, cloaking device, etc etc. + the levels could have some alien themes too like pd64 levels.

Perfect Dark Zero takes a lot of fire. Sure, the cover system was terribly useless and the story, just like Metal Gear Solid, stupidly ballooned from down-to-earth science-and-gadgets into whimsical-flying-super-powered-sword-weilding-ninjas, but it was still a good game apart from one glaring, all-encompassing flaw; the aiming sucked. It's easily the best example of what not to do if the intention is to create a smooth shooting experience that so isn't frustrating that it makes you chuck your controller out the window.
I sure hope that if they really are making a sequel, that they'll borrow the code that deals with aiming from a game that does it right.

You know, I enjoyed PD on the N64, but I didn't think it was a GREAT game. Really good, yes, but great? No.
Added to that, the N64 had some pretty bad marketshare, which probably meant a goodly amount of folks not ever getting to play the original game.
And then PD Zero comes along and really could not find its way.
I'm not sure a third PD is going to really going to do anything. There are Nintendo fans who didn't follow Rare when it went to MS, and there are PD fans who probably feel brutalized by the last game... so who is going to buy this game?
Of course, one only need look at the immense line of Army Men games to realize there is an audience out there for utter crap, so my argument may be beaten.

It might be cool, but I dunno Rare games seem to always suck now.
Personally I'm not too excited about it, even if it is pretty good its probably just going to be more of the same. I hope the new TimeSplitters becomes the next big game, Thats series is way too under appreciated.

Wait, what? A new Rare game? Yawn.
The last time Rare was worth paying any attention to was over ten years ago. (With the exception of the little-known "It's Mr. Pants!" on GBA. But you have to be a puzzle fan who REALLY appreciates quirky British humor for that one.)

Sweet news for me. I LOVED Perfect Dark Zero and so did my friends. My friends and I still get on there with games like Gears of War and Halo 3 out on the market and the surprising part is that we'll get a full game of people joining that are still playing it too. I love the slower pace to the game and that it's not a twitch shooter with everyone jumping around.

I still remember when PDZ was released. There was little buzz about the product, no sneak peeks of gameplay or major promotion, all we knew is that it was going to arrive with the 360. I think the promotion started-- what maybe a week prior to release?
Then when it finally did arrive, it was compared every which way with Halo 2.
And a few months after release, it was forgotten, even though some new features were later introduced which did improve the gameplay.
Do we need another Perfect Dark? I dunno. It might be interesting to see what would happen if they took another pass at it. There are areas where they can improve.
But I have to agree with-- what others have mentioned earlier, I'd like to see either original IP from Rare or some platform-type game.
The one game from Rare that I really liked with Viva Pinata, but I suspect we won't be seeing Viva Pinata 2 anytime soon. And Party Animals is NOT a Rare product from my understanding.

PD0 had some massive, massive flaws.
Massive.
But it was a ton of fun co-op. At that point better than any other console FPS, including Halo 2. It gave you very nice little indicators telling you precisely where the other person was.
It also had bots. For the love of god, bungie, give us some damned bots.
But yeah, other than that it was a huge misfire. Still, I got my money's worth by playing with the roommates.
