Wii Intercooler blows hot air
Eager to recreate the success of their Xbox 360 Intercooler – and complement their similarly useless PlayStation 3 Intercooler – Nyko has created the Intercooler for Wii. Y'know, to keep that space heater cool?
We kid because we care. Here at Joystiq HQ we've actually entertained dozens of letters from worried Wii owners asking us – undisputed experts in consumer electronic thermodynamics – whether or not they should store their Wii in a small, unventilated space right above an old, and terribly efficient, steam radiator. Also, they live in a tropical region. Oh, and there's a hairdryer blowing on it at all times. We don't understand that part either.
Now, instead of cautioning against such an impractical setup, we can recommend it ... with gusto! The Intercooler for Wii (which clips easily onto the back by the way) keeps that Wii cool without trading in the console's sleek looks (see, it's white). And, at $15 (that's 1500 Wii points), this Intercooler matches the budget conscious appeal of its console.

definitely not for me... my wii hasn't been turned on in months..
Jerk Face @ Oct 15th 2007 10:25AM
Your mom turned my wii on late night!
Zing!
Jerk Face @ Oct 15th 2007 10:26AM
Ahem, LAST night.
Nothing like ruining a perfectly good joke with your own idiocy.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 15th 2007 10:31AM
My aunt got my Wii hooked on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
At least it's not Jimmy Kimmel.
jsn @ Oct 15th 2007 10:40AM
haha, that's right. In your rush to deliver a quality zinger you misspelled a key word and ruined the moment. WAY TO GO JERK FACE!

And people wonder why 3rd party accessories don't sell on Nintendo systems...
Psaakyrn @ Oct 15th 2007 11:10AM
Because Nintendo gives them away free?
LaughingTarget @ Oct 15th 2007 4:24PM
More because, well, most of these accessories have no rational purpose. The Wii doesn't exactly pump out heat. I'd have more luck putting an intercooler on a cellphone in terms of lowering latent heat.
Lanturn of Ash @ Oct 15th 2007 10:27AM
I ordered two, so then I can stack them and make absolutely sure my Wii will never overheat in standby mode.

Off topic:
Anyone can tell if Toys r Us do the price match thing?
Martin @ Oct 15th 2007 10:35AM
Call a fucking Toys R Us and ask THEM, for Christ sake. You've asked the same question, OFF TOPIC, three times now.

=(
Micheal82 @ Oct 15th 2007 10:44AM
Toys R Us stopped doing the price match a few years ago.
Jon @ Oct 15th 2007 11:37AM
Fernando shops at kiddie stores shocker.
FK @ Oct 15th 2007 12:49PM
Fernando : When you are done calling Toys R Us with the number Martin provided, do everyone a favor and call 1-800-SUPERCUTS to find their nearest location. Tell them its an emergency.
Eric @ Oct 15th 2007 10:34AM
Even if I still played my Wii I wouldn't grab this, it gets the power from the AC adapter plug instead of the usb and this causes problems, see their cooler for the 360 for an example.
flameofdoom666 @ Oct 15th 2007 10:36AM
Why does this cause a problem?
Eric @ Oct 15th 2007 10:39AM
because it takes needed power from the system.
WiNG @ Oct 15th 2007 10:53AM
You'd be surprised how much heat is generated by printin money.
samfish (MSDF- Nurse Outfit!) @ Oct 15th 2007 10:59AM
No, you're thinking of the DS. The Wii's heat is generated by it's lazer lens, which beams money.
Jonny @ Oct 15th 2007 11:03AM
Is it alright with everybody else if we just start measuring currency in Wii points, as used in the above article? For example:
"Dude, I just got a bacon ultimate cheeseburger at Wendy's!"
"Dude! That's only like, 100 wii points!"
*high-five*
Oh, and Wendy's is awesome.
LaughingTarget @ Oct 15th 2007 4:22PM
They have to wear those corny Wendy's red-hair wigs when doing that commercial, it would be hilarious.
Poisoned Al @ Oct 15th 2007 11:11AM
Not only is this unnecessary, it's extra noise and saps power from the system. I mean, yeah, you might want one for your 360 as they can double up as paint strippers, but a Wii? A system that doesn't even get hot even with it's dinky, passive heat sink? Please.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Oct 15th 2007 10:48PM
Actually, the Wii does get hot *because* of it's dinky heat sink, and the WiFi unit has no ventilation. Plus, the system runs at full thermal load while turned off, which is completely idiotic.
People just pretend the Wii doesn't overheat or have disc read errors, because it's not consistent with Nintendo's previous efforts regarding build quality.
As to whether people need the Intercooler... HAHA! Yeah, putting one fan in the turbulent wake of another fan is going to be REAL effective. PC vendors (like Thermaltake) tried making CPU coolers like that, and they were total failures.
Lewis @ Oct 15th 2007 11:11AM
Intercooler murdered my 360.
WiNG @ Oct 15th 2007 11:35AM
It would just be easier to put a small fan next to your Wii.
timnc @ Oct 15th 2007 12:05PM
The point of this product is totally escaping me at the moment. I'll got dust off my Wii and turn it on for a while and see if it gets too hot. I'll get that blue light to quit flashing also.
Blazur @ Oct 15th 2007 12:20PM
I'd like to mod this fan so it blows the dust off the top of my Wii.
James @ Oct 15th 2007 12:13PM
I think this is useless BUT I think the rep it received from the 360 is unfair. The 360's failed not because of the intercooler but because they are prone to fail.
jron @ Oct 15th 2007 2:49PM
from what I remember the part that plugs into the 360's power adapter shorted out, this bricking the power supply or the 360 (my memory is fuzzy).
Synner @ Oct 15th 2007 3:37PM
Wrong answer genius. Nyko has acknowledged the problem and will replace any 360 damaged by the first revision of this product. You will notice on the new ones, there is not an on/off switch. The problem was caused by this device over drawing power or something because of the 360 having an external power supply.
But way to demonstrate your bias again while being ignorant of the facts douche.
Martin @ Oct 15th 2007 12:19PM
I must say it gave me quite a hearty chuckle to see the Wii Points reference for physical property. Kudos.
Saria the Cat @ Oct 15th 2007 1:14PM
I bought a completely unnecessary cooler for my Wii, just because it doubled as a lit-up stand. It was the Gamestop blue glowing light stand thing. It looks awesome, was $10, and I never have had to turn on the fan.
Cabcru @ Oct 15th 2007 3:37PM
From Nyko... the people who brought you the intercooler that would set your 360 on fire. Hurrah!
navstar @ Oct 15th 2007 4:24PM
How many Wiis have overheated... ever?
Burnt Meatloaf @ Oct 15th 2007 10:56PM
You read forums, right? You know about the white pixel problem?
There was some some accurate (SHOCK!) information about the problem on Wikipedia, but every trace of reliability issues with the Wii has since been stripped, except for the far less significant firmware update issue.
If the 360 wasn't so self-abusive, the Wii would be taking more flak than it is. The Gamecube was far better.
ThornedVenom @ Oct 15th 2007 6:00PM
15 dollars is not much, but it kills the whole minimalist aspect of the Wii.
