Believe it or not, the seven-year-old Playstation 2 is still alive and kicking, vying for consumer dollars this holiday season alongside the Wii, Xbox 360, and big brother PS3. COO of Crave Entertainment Rob Dyer told GamesIndustry.biz that the holiday market consists of four consoles and two portables, predicting that his company will profit most from software sold for the PS2, Wii, and handhelds this season.
Indeed, the PS2 continues to be supported by stellar software, from sports titles like Madden 2008, to fantasy titles like Odin Sphere and Persona 3, to big-budget phenomena like the upcoming Guitar Hero III. With software sales predictions listing PS2 as a close fourth this past month, it looks like maybe the head of Sega wasn't so crazy after all.

No wonder PS2 games are dirt cheap,Shadow of the colossus for just 10 bucks,God of war for 15$,MK:D for 20$,Resident evil 4 platinum for 30$,Final Fanatsy X-2 for 20$ the sad thing is that I bought GTA:SA instead, yeah I regret that big time.

That is the wonderful thing about the PS2. Because many people are trading in their PS2 games for next-gen there are many quality used PS2 games on the market.

Well... I actually am one of those gamecube-owners who thought he got fucked.... The PS2 had a way better run and is still running. I mean, People with a PS2 have still a lot of good game they didn't even have the time to play.

Don't I know it. There is still a backlog of more than seven games that I want to play on the thing. I'm in the middle of Rouge Galaxy right now.

They'll make the most money off of Wii software? Apparently they haven't seen the software attach rate numbers.

For the sake of the PS3 going forward, it might be time to stop production of the PS2. It seems like people are buying PS2's instead of PS3's, for the sake of a TON more games on the market, and for the much lower bargain-basement price. If Sony isn't it's own worst enemy, then it's probably damn near close to the top.

Won't work well unless Sony makes the 40GB PS3 properly compatable.

If that's really the case then no software company should be bitching about the ability to make good games for the Wii. If a company can make a great game for the PS2 they should be able to for the Wii. Oh well.
Still, this just goes to show how bad of an idea it is to remove backwards compatibility from the PS3.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again: the PS2 is the REAL Sony console with a 10-year life cycle. ;)

I love this picture. It's pretty amusing.
I wonder how long until PS2 officially "dies." It still sells pretty well after all these years, and has a great library of games. Some of which are still on retailer shelves, even!

My ps2 gets a lot more play then the wii.
RPGS take forever to beat. I've got wild arms, persona and even grandia sitting on the shelf still wrapped waiting to play. Second hand game are pretty cheap but EB game still wants to charge 50 bucks for a used copy of Altier Iris (because it is "rare")

God, I hate Crave. They must have one of the worst track records in the industry, and I seriously could care less about what anybody from that company would say about gameing.

This could have been the Dreamcast. The orignal Xbox could have lasted a little longer too and the Gamecube.

Just in case nobody has noticed; the PS2 is also morphing hit games from the PSP as well-Syphon Filter DARK MIRROR for one [n-i-i-i-ce game!]. If they can keep it the same without loading crapshit gimmickry on it-it'll outlive dino dung [er, twice].

Yeah, since when was PS2 the underdog? PS2 sold more than any other console ever. It is the cruel tyrant trying to pass the crown down to the PS3 while the Wii swooped out of the sky and stole the whole kingdom.

Isn't this because Crave makes the kind of shitty games that only sell on ps2?
I'll be interested to see what happens come Christmas, though. I can't hazard a guess, but I'll be interested to see how and why the top is reached, and of course this Christmas is critical.

i always feel bad for never getting one a ps2, but i never liked the system. thats mostly because it was always the system that all the "non-gamers" had (and i went to an urban school where everyone had one, so that was a turn off). and now that i have a wii (had it since launch) 360 and theyre getting that press, im feeling icky. on the plus side, i do want a ps3.

Which is why Sony should have waited at least a year to release the PS3.
