PS3 sees sales spike in Europe
MCV reports European tracking firm Chart Track informed them that the PS3 has seen a 178% increase in sales recently. They reached this conclusion calculating the "week-on-week PS3 hardware sales" following the introduction of the 60GB bundle and the new 40GB unit. It sounds like some fancy math is going on there, but we'll take any good news on the PS3 at this point.
Chart Track says the introduction of the 40GB PS3 created the third largest hardware sales week for the system behind the console's first two weeks on sale. Software sales also increased as Resistance: Fall of Man jumped the charts from #22 to #8. Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm also saw increases. It appears Sony is finally getting the PS3 into a price range consumers are comfortable with.

What you know there are people out there that like the PS3.
Just kidding.
I think the PS3 like the Wii are those sytems you bought in 08 when they have a good library right now a XB360 is a safe bet.
I would like to buy a PS3 80GB model in a bundle with MGS4 or FFXIII for 500$.
ruibing @ Oct 16th 2007 4:07PM
Apparently people who have waited this long to get a PS3 either already have a PS2 or just don't mind.
It's like when the RRoD problem came out for the 360 and people thought it was going to really ruin it like a Level 3 Killstorm (remember from the Simpsons?) but it didn't turn out so badly, saved by the warranty extension and Halo 3.
More console sales always good for the gaming industry as a whole. It means more money flooding into the industry, so it means more games, good for us all.
xXFenixKnight13Xx @ Oct 16th 2007 2:16PM
A yes Im Fernandos representative and I just wanted to give you a message from him..........Meh
plyx @ Oct 16th 2007 2:26PM
So let me get this straight, you work for Fernando? Talk about starting at the bottom and working your way up.
JJ Rooster @ Oct 16th 2007 9:58PM
I think he started at Fernando's bottom and worked his way IN.
Time @ Oct 16th 2007 2:17PM
But, but, but.......no BC, why would they buy a ps3 if they can't play ps2 games?.......ohhhhhh to play ps3 games.....silly me
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 16th 2007 2:21PM
all 3 good ones
Phranctoast @ Oct 16th 2007 4:56PM
says the guy with 3 gamecube..cough wii games.
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 16th 2007 2:20PM
"it seems Sony has found a price range consumers..."
Minus a few standard features
Gah typing on iPhone = pain in ass
DBX00 @ Oct 16th 2007 2:27PM
That Iphone doesn't have MMS, voice recording, voice dial, or a 3G network (all basic phone features) but it didnt' stop you from enjoying what it did have to offer at a premium price. Btw, I have an iphone and wouldn't trade it for the world but like this version of the PS3 is has some obvious limitations people are willing to live with.
WiNG @ Oct 16th 2007 3:07PM
Don't forget the iPhone doesn't have video recording, tactile feedback, or a soul.
Cellien @ Oct 16th 2007 3:19PM
@DBX00: I have an iPhone too, but it was only $299 as opposed to $399, or $499 (or $599 for that matter). I also didn't buy it to play games with... Now, if I bought the iPhone and I couldn't use the phone function very often then thats a problem. A bit like the PS3's issue of having a good catalog of games to play. :P
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 16th 2007 7:00PM
$399, jailbreaked, and yea, it is missing a crapload of stuff
Burnt Meatloaf @ Oct 17th 2007 2:12AM
For the money, I hope the iPhone is a better phone than the PS3 is a game machine.
Timo710 @ Oct 16th 2007 2:20PM
Well, what games would you buy a PS3 for, though I have a Wii, I think I would be more glad to have a x360 right now.
ruibing @ Oct 16th 2007 4:10PM
Well besides games already out, here's a list of upcoming games from ign:
http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html
Korova @ Oct 16th 2007 2:22PM
I cant resist this one:
Next week will see a proportionate spike in returns of PS3 when the customers bring it back and say that it is broken because it does not play PS2 disks.
Oh, tis too much fun.
Blast Processing Megadrive @ Oct 16th 2007 3:43PM
Ya know... I wouldn't be TOO surprised if that did happen. Most customers tend to be pretty ignorant.
And just as likely, they'll pony up the extra £50 for the 60GB model Value Pack (1 Sixaxis, and two games) when they bring back the 40GB model.
DBX00 @ Oct 16th 2007 2:23PM
Looks like all that talk amounts to nothing...people speak with their pockets and it seems like BC isn't really that important after all to the mainstream consumer. Btw, next week can't get here any faster...I want my Rachet and Clank
Optimaximal @ Oct 16th 2007 2:54PM
I doubt it's the case that people don't want BC.
As posted above, people will likely get peeved in a week or twos time once they've exhausted the PS3 catalogue, try and play their PS2 games and find they can't.
Sony made a dull move - yes, the consoles cheaper, but they're supposed to do that by saving money on manufacturing, not culling components and removing core features.
Deviation @ Oct 16th 2007 3:10PM
Unfortunately, it's two weeks, not one. Ratchet and Clank doesn't ship until the 30th (which means you'll see it in stores on Wednesday, the 31st).
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 16th 2007 7:10PM
if it has shitty sales, 137% is still shitty, i want real numbers
Tahiri @ Oct 17th 2007 3:21PM
"people will likely get peeved in a week or twos time once they've exhausted the PS3 catalogue, try and play their PS2 games and find they can't."
And then they'll remember they have a PS2 they can use for PS2 games. Hence why BC isn't an issue, the majority of gamers own a PS2.
Kamall @ Oct 16th 2007 2:26PM
Hopefully from here on in, things can only get better for Sony.
And please Joystiq, you despise any shred of good PS3/Sony news, don't bullshit.

{puts on Flame Armor}
it even "momentarily" passed the 360
Will it happen again, I don't know
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 16th 2007 2:28PM
yeah, but what kind of numbers are we talking about here, because 180% of 10 people is still like 18 people, so...
Marty @ Oct 16th 2007 2:31PM
Too little, too late. The PS3 has already lost this generation.
AstroZombie @ Oct 16th 2007 2:42PM
Dude, shut up. This generation is just getting started, in case you haven't noticed.
Optimaximal @ Oct 16th 2007 2:56PM
It's just starting for Sony... but lets not forget the 360 celebrates it's second birthday this year.
Given the release cycle MS will likely queue up, the 360 will be obsolete and replaced in another 2, leaving the PS3 standing.
Word of the street(IDF-Digital Ruler). @ Oct 16th 2007 3:17PM
Optimaximal that doesn't make sense, that means MS will have a new shiny console in the market while the PS3 would be also obsolete.
Ps3 needs games,no one will give a flying crap if it doesn't have games.
Boss Tempo @ Oct 16th 2007 3:58PM
No! Lair is going to save it! Lair is going to make this console worth buying! BluRay is the CLEAR winner in that "other" war! PS Home will save it!
Pfft yea right - that and their awesome Wiki Blog Editing Department.
STFU Sony - you're done.
Kola @ Oct 16th 2007 4:25PM
Um this may sound silly but you people do know that the 360 and PS3 sold basically the same amount during the same time period of release?
All I can do is shake my head at you guys. The 360 got games worth playing in it's 2nd year. The PS3 is on it's first yet everyone here can attest the PS3 is a failure. Simply amazing.
ulovemikeroch @ Oct 16th 2007 4:28PM
Hey boss,
http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/714/714044/vids_1.html
if that doesn't generate sales, I don't know what will.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Oct 16th 2007 5:35PM
Kola, thats because the PS3 is competing with the X360 NOW, not the X360 a year ago.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 16th 2007 6:51PM
@Koala
I know someone from a forum I go to that uses that same exact info constantly. It means absolutely nothing if the 360 is still going to beat it.
caliwaves @ Nov 1st 2007 11:56PM
Wow, some people on here are so ignorant. Saying sony is done is like saying the New England Patriots are done when they're down a touchdown in the first quarter to the Miami Dolphins
ThornedVenom @ Oct 16th 2007 2:32PM
It wouldn't surprise me: 400 euros for the 40GB version is ACTUALLY affordable in Europe.
FrankTheCrank @ Oct 16th 2007 2:35PM
But...but...but...Backward compatibility!!!
Wahhhhhhh.....
i_hate_mtv @ Oct 16th 2007 2:51PM
So, did it outsell the Wii and 360?
Time @ Oct 16th 2007 3:27PM
Jesus Christ, was my first post blurred out?
WoW, So let me get this straight, you people basically said that the price drop was basically useless and would have no positive effect because of the lack of BC, now that the early European sales suggest otherwise and I simply stated that, My comment gets blurred out?
Jesus Fucking Christ, is it my fault that I have a good paying job and can afford a high-end Alienware Gaming PC and pretty much get all of you 360 "exclusive" games cheaper and better on my pc
Does that make the 360 Gaming Library super awesome as the way you people put it I don't know and honestly don't care..
Just a little fucking Balance here...or is ever thing just "bash sony"
Kola @ Oct 16th 2007 4:29PM
To answer you question. Basically yes it's simply bash Sony. Down with Sony! Just follow like a monkey, you can do it. Or just keep quite like I do.
ukickmydog (NDF - Earth) @ Oct 16th 2007 7:13PM
like Crono pointed out, 180% of 10 people is still 18 people, stop the bullshit percentages and show the real numbers
the_game_master @ Oct 16th 2007 3:35PM
But does PS3 see a sales spike in America?
That's the question.
GamerG @ Oct 16th 2007 3:41PM
Basic PS3 price went from £425 to £299
The unit was advertised like a MF all week by Sony AND the retailers
Yet the supply constrained Wii still out sold it!!
MENTAL!!!
Sony need some big hitting games like Wipeout and GT5 to stem the tide of fail
robbyrob @ Oct 16th 2007 4:27PM
with the price drop they are going to sell even more!!
http://www.spymac.com/details/?2279673
Time @ Oct 16th 2007 4:50PM
@Kola
I mean really, I don't even won't to defend sony or praise them or anything...I just want a little balance when it comes to this type of discussions...right? we are discussing things or are we just mindless bashing sony because its "cool" (3 hearts for the sony sucks comment)
Again, every one just wrote off the 40GB ps3 because of its lack of BC.....well it seems that the ps3 had a spike in sales that even "momentarily" passed the 360 in Europe
well it happen in in other parts of the world like America? is BC overrated?...do these people even know that the 40GB ps3 lacks BC?....these are the things we should talk about but instead it gets boiled down to "bashing sony"
Phranctoast @ Oct 16th 2007 4:59PM
No PS3 news is good news. Im waiting for Folding to cure cancer. Maybe that will get a nod. prob not.
blooh (CDF - Nipple Ring) @ Oct 16th 2007 5:36PM
xbox is huege
Mal F4cti0n @ Oct 16th 2007 5:58PM
What happens when everyone returns it because it won't play their PS2 games? Maybe Sony will have a negative sales number in October?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Oct 16th 2007 7:02PM
This isn't really surprising since whenever there's a price drop, there is always a spike in sales. The question now is whether the spike will stick. Also I do think while there will be people who don't know/don't care about bc, I think(and it's been proven here)that there are many people who do see B/C as important and may delay their purchases of a ps3. Hell the main reason why I want a Wii is to play all of the old games I didn't get a chance to before. And since people are still saying that ps2 is still strong in the console race, I think it was a mistake for Sony to seperate the ps3 from the ps2.
