Rumor: GTA IV packing multiplayer for up to 16

Here's an interesting factoid for you: today was supposed to mark the release of the hugely anticipated (and obviously delayed) Grand Theft Auto IV for both Xbox 360 and PS3. Instead, we got a new Tony Hawk game ...

Now for a rather pedestrian rumor: GamingExcellence managed to snag some time with a Rockstar rep at a recent Sony press event in Toronto where they supposedly revealed that GTA IV will pack a multiplayer mode "aiming for at least 16 simultaneous players, with more than just the usual deathmatch mode." Though we knew that GTA IV would come with multiplayer functionality – something that the PSP versions have but the console versions do not – we're anxious to hear more details on precisely what that functionality is.

Funny, such a trifle of a rumor on what – perhaps in some other dimension where software hit its projected street date – would have been one of the biggest video game events of the year (all time?) ... oh, hey, did you realize Wild Petz: Dolphinz came out this week?

I've gotten bored with the GTA series. It hasn't changed much. I know that can be said for a lot of other games, but for some reason these just got boring after a while.

Sounds to me like someone never played San Andreas.

Nah I played San andreas and it pretty much sucks.

No, I owned San Andreas, and while it did change a lot of the things from the previous games, it still felt the same. There's not much they can do really. I just got bored of that type of game (GTA, True Crime, Saints Row, etc.).

Same here, GTA SA isn't that much of an abomination the thing is that is gets boring easily and there isn't a good story to follow in fact if GTA SA is considered to have a story I consider this a POS.

Also for the reviews claming GTA SA to be a great game etc etc this was a huge let down and I felt like I wasted my money especially because MK:D and Shadow of the colossus were on discount.

This new GTA is a jump in realism, all the gameplay and graphical changes can be compared as big of a jump from GTA2 to GTA3.

GTAIV has a cover system, a way to holster weapons and a new added level of realism making it not the same game that you played before.

If you think it's the same game no. GTAIV is going to be a combination of everything that's good about games today like Hitman, Shadow of Colossus, Gears of War and much more. All dropped into one massive world with a lot more realism.

GTAIV is a real sequel to the GTA franchise and if you're tired of the same gameplay wait until the real sequel comes out this spring. Because it'll be something new and diffrent...

Did they REALLY have to remind us that we were supposed to be playing GTAIV today?

How depressing.

Oh well, I'll just have to make Orange Box last until Galaxy in November. On the 23rd Rock Band will consume my foreseeable future.

I've heard there is ALOT more to this game than the shoot-em-up-dead scenario.

This game here is the reason why Microsoft will be getting 400 of my hard earned dollars when it is released.

I think they should have skipped the simultaneously launch and pushed out the 360 version if it was ready.

Does this mean you can now get a group together and gang-bang a hooker to replenish your life meter?

wow, why does every game NEED a multiplayer mode? I'm sure it will be cool though.

If it's something like VCS is probably going to be entertaining for a few minutes.

As much as I want this game its fallen off the radar for me for now. To busy on games that I WILL get to play this year..

It's not out for the 360, because they have a release agreement with Sony. Watch the multiplayer be a Saints Row type-of-deal. Quick 'n dirty.

Way to spread unfounded rumors, Xbot. R* was having problems getting the game running at a smooth framerate in BOTH systems. IGN had some hands on time around E3 with the 360 build and said the game had serious slowdown issues and wondered openly if the game would be ready to release this year.

i believe you mean 'another'. there hasn't been a 'new' (not to mention relevant) anything with Hawk's name in it for almost a decade.

OF course I think the 360 version will sell better. It will probably be more fan.

also the 360 version will have free expansion packs (or maybe they won't quite be free, i dunno)

this was one of my favorite features of the PSP versions. my friends actually bought PSPs for it and we would all get together and play the multiplayer.....though i was absolutely untouchable (strikes a superman pose). though that is not to say that the multiplayer in the PSP versions wasnt seriously flawed and buggy. if they can put in one similar to the portable ones sans the bugs and glitches and plus online play, this would make an already sure-to-be-great game even better.

I have faith that Rockstar can make an excellent and fleshed out multiplayer experience. But of course, the single player must come first.
