The last thing any street date's parents want to see is their kid hanging around with Target. No matter what sweet talking the red rings make, the street date's only going to end up one way: Broken. Just ask the Xbox 360 Arcade, or the Xbox 360 Elite, if the store's not selling items before their time, they're advertising them. The streak continues with this listing for the 40 GB PS3 captured at a Target price check kiosk.
It's all information that we expected though: 40 GBs, $400, late October. Now, if only Sony would announce it so the leakiest system in history can come ashore.

Yeah, but the no PS2 support is really, really gay.
At least I think so.
It's not the most important thing in the world, but it is a nice perk.. and to lose that just to get a cheaper system seems like a raw deal.

yeah, if they added the $20 chip back in and just raised the price of the unit by 20 bucks, it'd be a great deal. Of course, then noone would by the 80gb ps3

Listen to yourself for a moment. Playstation fanbase is not shrinking at all. Less than a year in in US/Japan, and 6 months in everywhere else, it's sold 6 million units. The great games are now starting to arrive en-masse, and the price has dropped to an affordable level for the next wave on non-hardcore Playstation users.
Everything is very rosey in Playstation land, PSP sales are up considerably (they were good anyway, just not as good as the DS). THE PS3 is RELIABLE, and the game studios that have spend the time to learn it's capabilities are getting payback.

Really Jerk Face? The lack of PS2 support is a man and has sex with other men? ; )
Jeez, and here I thought the Folsom Street Fair was raunchy. All this while, male b/c issues have been homosexually fornicating in retail channels right under our noses.

I bet all those fanboys that bought the system at $600 bucks must feel pretty good about this. Congrats your Blu-Ray player is now for sale at $400.

To tell you the truth i really didn't care paying 599.99 for the system! I don't have to worry about BC or whatever the crap they wanna do with the cheaper SKU and i'm pretty sure whoever camped-out to buy the first batch of PS3 knew what they were getting themselves into. No regret whatsoever

well, it's not really a blu-ray player. They removed the HDMI, and if I'm not mistaken, that brings it down to DVD quality.

at 399 US DOLLARS I'd consider it over 599 US DOLLARS. But the blasted BC eats at me. So many KH and FF games will be rendered useless.

It'll be nice to hear PS3 vs. 360 arguments not always degenerate to the cost argument for once. Sure, 360 owners will keep on hating, but whatever. I'll be perfectly content owning both...

Still a high price for an extremely slim (and mostly critically mediocre) game library. Good they are bringing the price down, but bring on some good games... and please something new AND GOOD besides MGS4 and Final Fantasy. Killzone looks interesting, but the first was a stinker so not so much of a system seller in my eyes.

While the games do hold some interest I have never been a Ratchet and Clank fan (not really sure why.. just has never seemed that appealing.) Eye of Judgment is obviously for table top game fans (opposite of video gamers!), and Haze looks interesting but is totally unproven thus far. Easily the most appealing game for the console this year is Uncharted. However, for the longest time, I thought Uncharted and the Lost game were the same. :\

some people play videogames and table top card games, just check penny arcade today for their take on it
I don't though
and isn't haze going on 360 too?

When you say you want something new that usually comes with something that has yet be proven. Anyway, the Sony library is improving and isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Anyway, the console has games for a diverse audience which is why I like the platform. I can only tolerate one shooter at a time and so having a mix of games is appealing to me and I'm very excited about the next few months for all the systems. I've got enough to keep me occupied until 2008 when the heavy hitters come along.

After the 60gb is finished, they won't be bringing it back.
So it will be $399 for a 40gb and $599 for an 80gb.

While I wouldn't complain about a price drop, Microsoft doesn't need to drop their price when they have such a great list of games to help sell their system. As is the 360 is the best value in high end gaming.

It better be
But knowing sony you know it probably won't. Either way though informed people like us will let those that are less informed in on sony's dark secret.
This sku is a joke in so many ways...
And I'm confused about the price. Is it 399 pounds or dollars?

it's both
so it'd be very cost effective if you live in the UK to pay US dollars to import one, if you don't get hosed on shipping (and if the system isnt region locked)

yeah, that pound-euro-USdollar-candoller conversion makes me wonder if sony is losing more money in the US on each ps3, or if they make a ton more per ps3 in europe, or what

It won't. It probably will be listed somewhere on the back in tiny tiny font that it won't have B/C.

It's unlikely that the system will outright say "Is not backwards compatible with Playstation 2 games," but rather simply not list that as a feature in the table-o-features or whatever on the back of the box.
Unless, of course, they're going to try and sell backwards compatibility as a feature on the higher-end PS3, in which case they'd have a table comparing the different SKUs on the back of them, and the little checkmark wouldn't be there for BC on the 40gb.

ps2's are still over $100 (brand new). if you're willing to get a 40gb ps3 and a ps2, just wait for the 60gb's to sell out and the 80gb to drop to $500
I'm waiting for a b/c ps3 at $400, and 5 ps3 exclusives that I'd buy. I'll be waiting a few years

I guess you guys missed the news that sales are up 178% in the UK since the launch of the new SKU. Seems like people are speaking with their pockets and they don't really care about BC.

Yeah and just like before the VERY NEXT week sales will have decreased dramatically once the sony faithful have gotten their cheap ps3's with bc.
Just like the psp went back to being last place against the DS after enjoying its week of being #1 thanks in part to FF.
Bottom line is that of course you expect to see a bump in sales. But how long will it last? Probably not long at all.
And when your sales are so low to begin with its not hard to see a more than 100% increase...christ a 30% in Wii sales would probably kill that 178% crap...
